New England holds some special museums. They are devoted largely or entirely to the work of just one person. And they are the artists’ birthplaces or one-time homes. Here are four examples of such museums.
Cyrus E. Dallin Art Museum
The name Cyrus E. Dallin (1861—1944) might not be familiar, but several of the artist’s sculptures (雕塑) are, especially those related to Native Americans. A good example is his “Appeal to the Great Spirit” standing in front of the Museum of Fine Arts. Born in Utah, he lived in Arlington for the final four decades of his life. The museum is in the Jefferson Cutter House, an 1830 Greek styled building.
Norman Rockwell Museum
Rockwell (1894—1978) was America’s well-known artist. The museum, founded in 1969, moved into its present location, Robert A.M. Stern-designed building in 1993. Its 998 paintings and drawings are the largest single collection of Rockwell’s artworks.
Kids 16 and under: free; adults: $20; the old: at a 10% discount (折扣)
Edward Gorey House
Edward Gorey (1925—2000) was an artist, but he was also an author and clothes designer. Gorey bought this 18th-century house in 1979 and lived there for the rest of his life. Edward Gorey House is also known as the Elephant House. Gorey had respect for animals. The activities of the house, from art education to exhibits, show Gorey’s support of animal well-being.
Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum
Gilbert Stuart (1755—1828) is responsible for what may well be the most familiar work of any American artist. His drawing of George is the basis of the first president’s portrait (画像) on the dollar. Stuart painted more than a thousand portraits throughout his life.
( )21.What do we know about Cyrus E. Dallin
A.He built the Jefferson Cutter House.
B.He lived in Arlington for half a century.
C.He was best known for his Greek styled sculptures.
D.He created famous works related to Native Americans.
( )22.How much will an old couple pay to enter Norman Rockwell Museum

A few years ago, we bought a model Lego set of the Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) for my dad’s birthday, hoping to combine his love for architecture with family time as our lives grew busier.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered around the large dining table to plan our line of attack. We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with accuracy in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction booklet. The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts coming to fruition, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the coloured tiles (地砖) on the building’s floor, our conversation took a turn too.
We were struck by the similarities and differences between Lego blocks and life. We were amazed by how complex the model was and its instruction booklet. We realized the booklet itself was a work of art, beautiful, but also detailed and clear. It provided us with the comfort of certainty. We knew if we followed the instructions, we would end up with a model that looked exactly like the picture on the box. If we made a mistake, all we had to do was retrace our steps and start again.
Life, however, does not fit together so neatly and rarely provides us with clear instructions. We talked over our respective lives, decisions made, and action and choices never taken. Dad reflected on a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, on the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the architects doing assembling. But out in the world, we were the ones being assembled. We think we’re in control, but our choices are shaped by forces beyond our control. In the face of uncertainty, we have to move on, trusting both in the process and the end result.
Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room to look at the completed Lego model, which reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Like the now dusty model, life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather how we live it.
( )24.Which of the following best describes the author’s experience of building the Lego set
A.Simple and boring.
B.Creative and enjoyable.
C.Complex and rewarding.
D.Challenging and frustrating.
( )25.What does the underlined word “assembling” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Putting up. B.Winding up.
C.Tearing up. D.Picking up.
( )26.How does the author suggest we handle uncertainty in life
A.By seeking guidance from others.
B.By avoiding making any decisions.
C.By focusing on immediate outcomes.
D.By moving forward with confidence.
( )27.What does the completed Lego model symbolize for the author
A.The joy of family bonding.
B.The journey of living one’s life.
C.The value of hard work in life.
D.The achievement of life goals.
Animals, including humans, feel sound as well as hear it, and some of the most meaningful communication happens at frequencies (频率) that people can’t hear. Elephants, for example, use these low-frequency sounds to, among other things, find family or a mate across long distances. Whales do it, too.
But you don’t have to weigh a ton to make a sound. In fact, you don’t have to be bigger than a pea. Consider, for example, the treehopper, a curious little animal that lives on the stems (茎) of the leaves. University of Missouri biologist Rex Cocroft has spent much of his time listening closely to treehoppers with his team.
The team discovers that all the sounds being heard from treehoppers are produced by males. They do it by vibrating (振动) their abdomens (腹部) to make a wide variety of strange sounds. There is almost no airborne sound produced with these vibrational sounds. Cocroft explained, “If a treehopper were to stand on your finger and produce a sound, you would feel the vibration but hear no sound.”
They showed that some sounds, not surprisingly, seem to be aimed at attracting females. And some are aimed at other males.
Cocroft explained, “When two males meet each other, or when they are mate-searching on a branch, we’re hearing ‘purring, bdddddrrrr’ sounds that males give.” Normally, a person couldn’t hear any of this, because the sound travels along the stem, inside it. And that’s how other treehoppers detect it.
Cocroft said treehoppers have very sensitive legs. And they stand around on stems, which are good at spreading vibrations. So they just use what nature gives them to communicate with each other.
“They have so many different forms of social behaviour and grouping,” Cocroft explained. “And once there are animals living in groups, then there will be all sorts of interesting possibilities for communication.”
( )28.What does Cocroft’s research focus on about treehoppers
A.Their variety.
B.Their communication.
C.Their living areas.
D.Their numbers.
( )29.What can we know about treehoppers
A.They sense sounds by legs.
B.They knock the stems to make sounds.
C.Their sounds can be easily heard by humans.
D.Females make sounds to meet each other.
( )30.What does Cocroft say about animals’ living in groups
A.It is key to their survival.
B.It drives an increase in their numbers.
C.It often leads to communication.
D.It contributes much to the division of animal types.
( )31.What is the best title for the text
A.A magic moment in nature
B.A journey to the wildlife
C.Learning from nature
D.Communication sounds among animals
An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard. It lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities, researchers found in a primary study.
Developed by the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures.
Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to put in electrodes (电极). This new approach “could provide a possible path to help patients with communication problems, avoiding the use of surgeries,” says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King, a Meta AI researcher. King and his colleagues trained a computational tool, also known as a language model, to detect words and sentences on 56,000 hours of speech recordings from 53 languages. The team applied an AI with this language model to databases from four institutions, which included brain activity from 169 volunteers. In these databases, participants listened to various stories and sentences, while the people’s brains were scanned by magnetoencephalography (MEG) (脑磁图).
Then with the help of a computational method that helps account for physical differences among actual brains, the team tried to decode what participants had heard using just three seconds of brain activity data from each person. The team instructed the AI to match up the speech sounds from the story recordings with patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that short time, given more than 1,000 possibilities. Using MEG, the correct answer was in the AI’s top 10 guesses, the researchers found.
“The new study is the decoding of speech recognition, not production,” King agrees. “Though speech production is the final goal, for now, we’re quite a long way away.”
( )32.Whom might the AI benefit
A.People unable to read.
B.People who are unconscious.
C.People who can’t move around.
D.People unable to communicate normally.
( )33.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4
A.The purpose of the AI.
B.The significance of the AI.
C.The advantage of the AI.
D.The working principle of the AI.
( )34.What does the AI require to make its prediction
A.Speech production.
B.Top ten guesses.
C.Patterns of brain activity.
D.Disabled volunteers.
( )35.What is the best title for the text
A.A new way to decode speech
B.The employment of MEG technology
C.An advance in artificial intelligence
D.A solution to communication problems

A fish on the baseball field
My parents always hoped I’d play baseball. You would be amazed at how much they loved baseball. They actually met in line to buy hot dogs at a baseball game. Also, my dad was the star pitcher (投球手) on his high school team, which happened to go all the way to the state championship!
You might think that with a family history like that, baseball would just be in my blood and I’d be naturally talented at it. Unfortunately, you’d be wrong. When I was little, my dad got me a plastic bat and ball and a mini catcher’s mitt I could throw OK, but no matter how much I tried, I could not catch or hit a ball at all!
Last year, my friend Ollie was super excited to join a baseball team. Then my parents decided baseball would be the best thing for me, too. Before I could say “Thanks, but no thanks”, they had signed me up!
Don’t get me wrong. The experience wasn’t terrible. Our coach was nice and the kids were great. Even though I never became good at baseball, I did improve. But the very best part of the whole experience—the silver-lining part—was something completely unexpected.
After every baseball practice, Ollie’s grandmother would take us to the community pool on the way home. Ollie was more interested in playing in the pool than swimming. I, on the other hand, could not get enough of swimming.
Ollie usually ended up leaving the water to hang out with his grandmother while I stayed in for a few more minutes with a girl named Isabel, a member of the swim team. We often challenged each other to see who could hold her breath underwater longer or who could get to the other side of the pool faster.
One day, Isabel said, “You are a natural little fish. Do you want to join our swim team ” She looked at me with expectation.
Paragraph 1:
I was hesitant (犹豫的).

Paragraph 2:
When I arrived home, I nervously told my parents about the swim team.

W: That’s how I feel just thinking about the spelling competition next week.
M: I didn’t know you made it to the finals.
W: I’m worried I’ll get nervous and freeze on stage. I might forget how to spell everything, even my own name. I don’t know what to do.
M: Nancy, I know that you’re not going to forget how to spell your name. I’ll help you get through this. I’ll go to the school hall with you to practise. Then I’ll teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught me. Believe me. It works.

Her achievement is particularly inspiring since she was ill and away from school for half a month immediately before the exams. Jane’s class teacher told me that Jane asked him questions online every day. Her intelligence and hard work finally paid off. For her excellent work, she will receive a gold cup and tickets for her and a friend to a concert of her choice. We hope that she greatly enjoys her prize. Remember, everyone, the point of the contest is to encourage all of you to unlock your hidden ability. So try your hardest and be ready to shine. The next Student of the Year could easily be you.

根据第二段“We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with accuracy in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction booklet. The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts coming to fruition, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the coloured tiles (地砖) on the building’s floor, our conversation took a turn too.” 因此C项“Complex and rewarding.”
根据第五段“Here, we were the architects doing…But out in the world, we were the ones being assembled.” 故选A项。
根据第五段“In the face of uncertainty, we have to move on, trusting both in the process and the end result.”
根据最后一段“Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room to look at the completed Lego model, which reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Like the now dusty model, life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather how we live it.”
C

And they stand around on stems, which are good at spreading vibrations. So they just use what nature gives them to communicate with each other.”
根据倒数第二段“Cocroft said treehoppers have very sensitive legs. And they stand around on stems, which are good at spreading vibrations. So they just use what nature gives them to communicate with each other.”

通读全文,尤其根据第一段的“An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard.”(人工智能可以以惊人的准确性从大脑活动中解码单词和句子。 和第二段的“Developed by the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures.”

One possible version:
Hi Max,
I’m delighted to hear about your upcoming visit to China! I know you have a great passion for Chinese cuisine, and I can’t wait to introduce you to some amazing dishes.
One food I highly recommend is Peking Duck. The combination of crispy skin, tender meat, fresh vegetables, and the sweet-salty sauce makes Peking Duck hard to resist, especially when they are wrapped in thin pancakes. It’s a true taste of China.
Be sure to give it a try when you pay a visit, and you will fall in love with every bite. I can’t wait to share this experience with you!
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
I was hesitant(犹豫的). Baseball had always been the family tradition, the sport my parents had envisioned for me since I was little, so the thought of disappointing them felt unbearable. Also, they had already invested so much time and money into my baseball training, and wouldn’t be happy to see me switch to something different. Yet, deep down, I knew swimming was a better fit for me. Isabel, seeing my struggle between sticking with baseball and pursuing my newfound passion, suggested I have an honest conversation with my parents.
When I arrived home, I nervously told my parents about the swim team. “Swimming ” they repeated, astonished. There was a long pause. “But…baseball and I were never a good match. Swimming just feels natural to me!” I explained. To my surprise, my dad nodded thoughtfully and said, “Actually, I used to swim a little back in college.” My mother inquired in detail about the swim team and the practices. At the end of the conversation, they became supportive, and even proud of my decision. Feeling a huge weight lifted from my shoulders, I couldn’t wait to dive into this new adventure.
