They were sitting in a tuk-tuk, a common form of public transportation in Southeastern Asia.Attracted by their cheerful smiles and bright eyes, the 31-year-old Chinese photographer asked their father, who was the driver, if he could take photos of them. While chatting, Liu learned that the two sisters were of school-age, but their family couldn’t afford their school fees. Liu offered to provide financial support for their education and arranged to meet them the next morning, but the father didn’t show up. Determined, Liu managed to locate the family by the end of the day, but they were initially hesitant to trust him. With a local friend vouching for Liu, the family eventually accepted his generosity. Just four days later, the sisters were enrolled in a primary school. In October 2020, Liu initiated a long-term public welfare project called Hope Vision under his own photography brand — “Hope” is also his daughter’s name. The project cooperates with a center for disabled children called Hands of Hope in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Each month, Liu gathers a group of volunteers to visit the hearing-impaired children at the center, providing both material support and emotional companionship. They bring items such as stationery, drinks, food, toys, and other necessities. They also spend half the day engaging with the children by playing games, attending classes, or “chatting” with them using sign language. In fact, Liu and his two children have set up a family project called Pay It Forward. Occasionally, they help one person in need and suggest that this person also help someone else in whatever way they can, ensuring that the kindness continues and doesn’t stop with them.24. Why did Liu Ailun decide to help the two girls A. Because of their charming smiles and eyes. B. Because of his concern for their education.C. Because of their heavy family debts. D. Because of their father’s touching story.25. What does the underlined word “vouching” in Paragraph 2 probably mean A. Boasting. B. Applying. C. Guaranteeing. D. Arguing.26. What can be concluded about volunteers gathered by Liu A. They accompany the senior citizens patiently. B. They are helpful supporters.C. They provide all the things needed. D. They bring some signs to communicate.27. What is a suitable title for the text A. Framing Futures: One Photographer’s Journey of Hope.B. Improving Education: One Photographer’s Efforts to Help More.C. Promoting Trust: One Photographer’s Encounter with Two Girls.D. Helping the Poor: One Photographer’s Generosity for Others.CBefore 2022, there was barely a whisper about it. Now the concept of “food noise” seems to be everywhere on social media: a quick TikTok search, for instance, finds that videos related to “food noise explained” attracted 1.8 billion views as of this summer. Coined to name the experience of thinking about food, longing for food, planning our next meal and so on, “food noise” describes some of the most basic human drives: hunger, appetite, longing. But now these are being seen as problems, rather than features. We should resist this definition. To call something noise is to go beyond describing it: It’s to prove the normative claim that simply loving food, letting food occupy our thoughts and responding to our hunger is suspect. It isn’t.The pleasure we take from food is an important human good. Food connects us to ourselves, and with each other, and there is real harm in teaching people to view the pleasure they take from such fare as a problem. Famed English food writer Nigell Lawso earlier this year wrote in a post that she “couldn’t bear to live without food noise”. One commenter responded in agreement “I believe it is called ‘food music’”Some people who identify with the term “food noise” experience genuinely intense food thoughts, as well as engaging in harmful behaviors such as bingeing(大吃大喝), But according to experts, these problems are often rooted in restriction. In other words, food noise is what may happen when you’re not eating enough to satisfy your appetite, often under the pressures of diet culture, by normalizing restrictive eating. And for any of us, the joy and pleasure and comfort of food should not be discounted. We need to eat to live, of course, but it goes beyond that; to live to eat has long given many of us meaning and community as well as sustenance. Food noise should not be treated as a problem. Rather, we might call it “food music”, and dance to it.28. What attitude does “food noise” show towards food A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.29. Which of the following statement will the commenter agree with A. The desire for food is annoying. B. People have lost interest in food.C. Dinner with music can increase appetite. D. A good appetite doesn’t bring about guilt.30. What does the diet culture mean in Paragraph 4 A. People should have healthy diets. B. People should limit their food intake.C. People should normalize their eating habits. D. People should avoid harmful bingeing.31. What does the author think of food noise A. It may contribute to building communities. B. It can help us handle food problems.C. It should be accepted with joy. D. It hardly gives meaning to our lives.DWant to boost your memory for tomorrow Get in a workout today. At least that’s the takeaway from a new study finding that older adults who did more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity than usual on a given day did better in memory tests the day after.Researchers found that moving more throughout the day and getting at least six hours of sleep further enhanced mental performance. The study, published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, builds on previous research showing exercise is good for brain health. “We know from laboratory-based studies that we get a cognitive boost in the minutes to hours following exercise,” Mikaela Bloomberg, lead study author, told Health. “We wanted to see whether this benefit might last longer than a couple hours outside of a laboratory.”To examine the link between exercise and memory, researchers recruited 76 cognitively healthy adults from the United Kingdom aged 50 to 83. The participants wore trackers on their wrists for eight days to monitor physical activity and sleep. They also took memory-focused tests daily.Researchers found an association between an additional 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, as measured by tracker data, and better short-term working memory and longer-term memory, which is the ability to recall specific events the next day. Light exercise, such as taking the stairs or walking, did not affect memory the next day.The association between cognitive performance and exercise held when researchers controlled for sleep scores. But they also found an independent link between more sleep and better episodic(许多片段的) memory and psychomotor speed, a measure of how quickly a person can process information, make sense of it, and respond.Experts agreed that the findings aren’t surprising. “There is increasing evidence that regular physical activity can enhance cognitive abilities and potentially lower the risk of developing future dementia,” Peter Glibbus, director of cognitive and behavioral neurology at Marcus Neuroscience Institute, told Health. “This research reinforces existing evidence that regular physical activity is essential for optimal brain function.”The study has several limitations, however, including the small sample size and the low diversity of participants’ cognitive health.32. What can we infer from the new study A. The more exercise, the healthier. B. Vigorous exercise helps brain function.C. The benefit is limited in the laboratory. D. All exercise improves memory.33. Who could be a participant in the experiment according to Paragraph 3 A. A woman with memory defects. B. An athlete in the US team.C. A healthy college student. D. A man aged 60 who smokes.34. What’s the association between cognitive performance and sleep A. Sleeping more improves memory. B. Sleeping determines reaction speed.C. Sleeping helps memory to some degree. D. Sleeping has nothing to do with memory.35. What do we expect of the participants in the following studies A. Diverse backgrounds. B. Better cognitive health.C. Various mental conditions. D. Different health problems. Laziness, often misinterpreted, is a complex issue that affects many. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven’t shared those words with for a long time.”When I walked out of the classroom, I first felt confused then became a little angry about the task. Actually. most of the men in our group were over 35 and were raised in the generation of men that were taught that expressing emotions was not “macho(男子汉的)”. Showing feelings or crying (heaven forbid!) was just not done, so this was a very threatening assignment for most of us.I didn’t feel that I had anyone to say those words to, but as I began driving home my conscience started talking to me. It was telling me that I knew exactly who I needed to say “I love you” to. You see, five years ago, my father and I had a disagreement and really never resolved it since that time. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other. However, by the time I got home, I had convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him. It was weird, but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest. The next morning I got up early. I was so excited I could hardly sleep. At 9:00 I called my dad to see if I could come over after work. My dad responded with some hesitation, but he finally agreed. At 5:30, I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell, praying that dad would answer the door. I was afraid if mom answered that I would chicken out and tell her instead. Paragraph 1:But as luck would have it, dad did answer the door.Paragraph 2:Two days after that visit, my dad had a heart attack and ended up in the hospital, unconscious. 56.whose 57. showcasing 58. known 59.has 60. dishes 61. Taking a deep breath, I stepped inside and said, “Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.” Dad’s face softened, the wrinkles seemed to disappear and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me, whispering in my car, “I love you too, son, but I’ve never been able to say it.” We had dinner together that night, chatting and laughing as if making up all the lost joy of these years. A loving atmosphere enveloped me and I was completely immersed in the happiness that I hadn’t felt for a long time. Two days after that visit, my dad had a heart attack and ended up in the hospital, unconscious. Deeply depressed, I rushed to the hospital to see him. Dad couldn’t speak now, lying on bed without knowing my presence. Tears welling up in my eye, I couldn’t help sobbing. Though feeling great loss, I was sure that one thing did relieve my grief—I told my dad “I love you”. Suddenly, the true meaning of the teacher’s assignment dawned on me: Cherish what you have and don’t miss the opportunity to express your love to your beloved ones. Text 1W: I just wanted to take a nap, but it was dark when I woke up. As the student representative, my report is to give suggestions for the form, contents and frequency of our college’s new magazine. To reduce environmental pollution caused by using paper, it would seem reasonable to publish the magazine online. The majority of students have computers so it is easy for them to read it. For those without Internet access, a hard copy edition could easily be printed out. A recent study shows that most college publications contain college news, photos of recent events and a calendar of upcoming events. A key challenge would be to make our magazine livelier. Our magazine should have a column plus letters to the editor. Finally, my recommendation is about the frequency of the magazine. Ideally, it would be a weekly publication, but that can not be possible, particularly at exam times. The next step would be to ask likely contributors how often they could write. I believe that as long as the magazine can be improved, it will make students’ life more colorful.
