While beautiful New Year's fireworks light up skies around the world, there are also many unusual but wonderful ways people across the world bring in the New Year.
All round things (Philippines)
Filipino culture celebrates the New Year by serving twelve different fruits. Apples, melons, oranges, and grapes are popular picks, but any round fruit will do. The round produce stands for wealth for each month of the upcoming year. Locals also wear clothes with polka dots(圆点) on them and fill their pockets with round coins.
Throwing paper out of the window (Argentina)
The pieces of coloured paper will fly through the streets of Buenos Aires around lunchtime on December 31. The reason behind the custom is that Argentines throw out all their old documents and papers before the curtain falls on the year to show they're leaving the past behind. It's hardly the most dangerous thing to fly out of windows around the world on the New Year, though—many other Latin American countries are fond of throwing buckets of water, while South Africans throw out their old tables, chairs, etc. onto the street from great heights.
Breaking plates into pieces (Denmark)
If you want to make a new Danish friend for the New Year, throw a plate against their door. The tradition is meant to bring the house owner good luck for the year ahead. Danes also jump off chairs to leap into the New Year, and stayed glued to their TVs for Queen Margrethe Ⅱ's yearly speech and a screening of the black-and-white English language comedy Dinner for One (known as The 90th Birthday in Denmark), which is also popular in Germany.
Eating grapes fast (Spain)
In Spain, with 12 seconds remaining until the New Year, people eat 12 green grapes to bring good luck in the coming year. It's considered to be bad luck if you can't eat them all by the final midnight chime (钟声). Eat them up in time and 12 months of good luck will come your way.
21.How do people in the Philippines celebrate the New Year
A.By wearing new clothes on the eve.
B.By getting close to something round.
C.By wishing for wealth in the upcoming year.
D.By picking up twelve different kinds of fruits.
22.Why do Argentines throw out their old documents and papers on December 31
A.To leave the past year and welcome the new year.
B.Because the curtain will fall on the new year.
C.Because it is not the most dangerous custom.
D.To bring the house owner good luck for the year ahead.
23.Which of the following is NOT a New Year tradition in Denmark
A.Jumping off a chair.
B.Applying glues to the TV.
C.Listening to the Queen's New Year speech.
D.Throwing a plate against a new friend's door.

Since birth, I have worn a tracheotomy tube(气管切口插管) around my neck to help me breathe. When I was growing up, it was common for adults to tell me that I should wear colorful scarves(围巾) so that other people wouldn't see it. They would say, “You can't even tell it's there,” as if my disability is something to be ashamed of. As a kid, I never really thought about my disability the way I do now. It was just how I lived my life.
Now I'm 26 years old, and I'm proud to call myself a disabled woman because I consider my disability to be a part of who I am. I travel around the world to share my story as a disabled reporter and train other reporters on how to cover disability problems. I still remember the first time I gave a university lecture to a group of students. I realized that I could help create safe spaces where disabled people can be themselves and feel free to tell their own stories.
Unfortunately, being disabled is still viewed as something that is meant to be overcome. But for so many of us, this is how we live. This is who we are. I am always moved by the people I've met in the disability community: educators, historians, writers, lawyers and many more because we share the same dream and the same need for a mentally-safe world.
24.Why did the writer wear a special tube when she was a child
A.It could help her breathe normally.
B.It was a special fashion at that time.
C.She wanted to look different from others.
D.A photography editor asked her to do it.
25.Why did the adults ask the writer to wear colorful scarves
A.To keep warm. B.To protect her neck.
C.To look beautiful. D.To cover her special tube.
26.What does the writer think of being disabled
A.Shameful. B.Pitiful.
C.Ordinary. D.Abnormal.
27.Which is the best title for the text
A.How I Became Disabled
B.How I Became Proud of Being Disabled
C.How to Get Along with a Disabled Person
D.How to Edit Photographs of Disabled People

Running is often tiring and hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track.
But while it's long been believed that endorphins(内啡肽)—chemicals in the body that cause happiness—are behind the so-called “runner's high”, a study suggested that there might be more to this phenomenon than we previously knew.
According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids(内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling.
To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice. Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety.
But after being given a drug to block their endorphins, the mice were still happy and relaxed after running. However, when their endocannabinoids were blocked with a different drug, the runner's high symptoms seemed to fade.
“The long-held notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner's high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on the science blog Lifehacker.
Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it's already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety.
The U.K.'s National Health Service even prescribes(开药方) exercise for patients who are suffering from depression.
“Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it's especially useful for people with mild to moderate(中等的) depression,” it wrote on its website.
It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don't fully understand where it comes from. At least if we're feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes.
28.What did scientists from German universities recently discover
A.Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression.
B.The runner's high could be caused by endocannabinoids.
C.Endorphins may contribute to one's high spirits after running.
D.The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one's mood.
29.For what purpose did the scientists give mice drugs in their experiment
A.To find what reduces the runner's high symptoms.
B.To see the specific symptoms of the runner's high.
C.To identify(确定) what is responsible for the runner's high.
D.To test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released.
30.What does the underlined word “notion” in Paragraph 6 probably mean
A.Effect. B.Goal.
C.Question. D.Opinion.
31.What can we learn according to the U.K.'s National Health Service

B.Regular workouts can help ease(减轻) depression symptoms.
C.Regular workouts only work for those with serious depression.
D.Regular workouts can help people completely recover from depression.

It was an art lesson. Rachel sat at the desk watching her classmates busy preparing the water jars and paints. She understood why Mrs. Weston asked her to sit down and got Lisa to fetch everything for her. It was always a disaster when Rachel tried to do art!
Rachel sighed and reached out to dip her brush in some black paint and—oh, no! She knocked over the jar. The water spread across the desk and drowned the paper. Lisa called Mrs. Weston to see what Rachel had done. Rachel went red in the face. She jumped to her feet to get a cloth. Her chair fell over backwards. She turned round and her paintbrush caught Lisa across the face, giving her a black moustache. Lisa was so surprised that she fell back against a wire bookshelf. It came crashing down and the books went all over the floor.
How clumsy(笨拙的)! Rachel thought as she went home on the bus. The bus stopped outside her house. She jumped up and her elbow (肘部) knocked a woman's hat right over her eyes. Oh, no! Rachel said sorry, got off and ran indoors. Mum wasn't in the kitchen but lay in bed as she caught an awful cold. Rachel offered to make a cup of tea but Mum would rather wait for Dad. Rachel sighed. She understood Mum was afraid that she would spill(使洒出) it.
“But would you go to Mrs. Willow's for some cold medicine ” asked Mum. Rachel turned to the door at once. “But Mrs. Willow's house is full of beautiful things, so if she asks you to come in, you'd better say no.” Rachel sighed and ran out.
Mrs. Willow was an old lady with white hair and sharp blue eyes living in an old house. She opened the door and invited Rachel in. Rachel said why she came and that she preferred to wait outside remembering her mother's warning. Mrs. Willow insisted that Rachel come inside. Rachel took a deep breath and stepped in.
A
本段小标题点明“所有圆形的东西”,再根据本段中的“...any round fruit will do...Locals also wear clothes with polka dots on them and fill their pockets with round coins.”
Throwing paper out of the window (Argentina)部分中的“The reason behind the custom is that Argentines throw out all their old documents and papers before the curtain falls on the year to show they're leaving the past behind.” 故选A。
本段中的“If you want to make a new Danish friend for the New Year, throw a plate against their door.”对应D项,“Danes also jump off chairs to leap into the New Year”对应A项,“stayed glued to their TVs for Queen Margrethe Ⅱ's yearly speech”对应C项,由此可知,丹麦人会通过向新朋友的门上扔盘子、从椅子上跳下来、听女王的新年演讲来迎接新年。
根据第一段第一句“Since birth, I have worn a tracheotomy tube around my neck to help me breathe.” 故选A项。
根据第一段第二句中的“it was common for adults to tell me that I should wear colorful scarves so that other people wouldn't see it”可知,大人们让作者戴围巾是为了让作者遮挡住管子。
由第三段和第四段第一句“To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice.”
由倒数第二段中的“Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it's especially useful for people with mild to moderate depression”可知,定期锻炼身体有助于缓解抑郁症状。故选B。
D
由第一段中的“The common sight of crowds of children chatting on their phones or sending short messages has disappeared.(常见的一群孩子在手机上聊天、发短信的现象已经消失了。)”
由第二段中这名二年级学生的话“I couldn't concentrate...played games on the phone sometimes.(如果我带着手机,我在课堂上会无法集中注意力。
由第三段中的“The school is also flexible...contact their parents.(学校在执行这一计划时也是灵活的。

39.A 主旨句。根据后面“When it comes to clothes, you should often pick out the unused. Selling them on eBay or Carousell can give you extra cash to go shopping with.(说到衣服,你应该经常把那些闲置的衣服挑出来。
根据前句“Every time you look at your closet and organize it, you find just how many items of clothing you have.(每次你看你的壁橱并整理它,你会发现你有多少件衣服。)”

在“It is the first time that...”
故填for。

故填it。

第二节
One possible version:
There were beautiful things everywhere—pretty vases and pots. All the treasures seemed to boast a long history and thus priceless. “Wow, it is really a land of wonders.” Rachel couldn't help admiring the elegance of the china figures and vases. Mom's words were echoing in her mind, but curiosity still got the upper hand. She reached for one of them, but unfortunately, the vase slipped off her hand and lay in pieces on the floor. Her heart missing a beat, she felt terribly worried.
With a smile,Mrs. Willow comforted her, saying it had been broken before. Seeing Mrs. Willow's sharp blue eyes filled with warmth and affection, Rachel felt extremely regretful for her clumsy behavior. “If I had been more careful, the disaster wouldn't have happened.” Rachel knew that what Mrs. Willow said might be an excuse to relieve her uneasiness and embarrassment. She made a resolution in her heart that from the day on she would never be so careless and swore to be a kind and thoughtful person like Mrs. Willow.
