第一节 阅读下面语言材料, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
I was scared of flying. Not just a little. Whenever I got on a plane, I was scared to death. I couldn't move forward. As an adult, I'd cried on planes more than once. The fear wasn't reasonable, but it was not something I was in control of either. I read about a virtual reality(VR) therapy(虚拟现实疗法) that had helped people like me, so I decided to try it.
STEP 1: GET A REAL DOCTOR
If you want to try this therapy, you'll need a doctor. That part is real, not virtual! During my sessions(治疗期), however, we spent a lot of time in the virtual world. And even then, the doctor was always in control of the software.
STEP 2: PANIC(恐慌)
The first time I put on a VR headset, I was surprised by my body's reaction(反应). When you're in a VR environment, your mind can't tell what's real or not real. Just in a few minutes, I was in great panic. My heart beat really fast. And it was difficult for me to breathe. The doctor taught me how to be in control of myself again by using a breathing skill.
STEP 3: REPEAT
At my first session, my fear level was especially high. There was still a lot of fear at the second time, but I felt much better than before. With careful breathing, I calmed down. By my third session, I felt almost relaxed.
STEP 4: FLY
Engine noise rising, speed increasing, ground disappearing—and all without the usual fear. I still felt nervous—a real plane is without doubt stronger than a VR plane, but I truly had got over my fear. The VR therapy had worked! I may even take flying lessons if the therapy continues to work so well.

One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that I felt lonely when I was with my classmates, and I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her that every day was a fight for me. I always cried alone so my classmates wouldn't know how much I was hurting.
She sat there just listening, trying to decide if I was telling a lie. Finally, when my story ended, there were tears in her eyes. And then she did something unthinkable. She said, “Thank you.” From then on, Shelley was a different little girl. She started smiling and talking with other kids.

Pat McGee noticed her daughter hadn't returned to the dentist's waiting room just before her surgery(手术) was supposed to start. She walked to the bathroom and found Jessica McDaniels, 22, crying there. McGee took her daughter into her arms. “We're going to say goodbye to the old Jessica,” she said, “and hi to the new Jessica.”
McDaniels, from St. Louis, US, had been wishing for this day since high school, when the bullying(霸凌) about her teeth started. While it was finally happening, she was nervous.
It was a social media post two months ago that got her there. Someone posted a photo of McDaniels with a comment about her overbite(龅牙)—a serious problem that affects the teeth. The post was shared many times, with many people making unkind remarks about her appearance.
The bullies didn't know the road McDaniels had travelled. She had nine surgeries on her ears from 2 to 12 years old. She was almost deaf in her right ear. Her adult teeth didn't start coming in until she was 11 or 12, and doctors couldn't work out why they were pushed outward. It got worse as she got older. McDaniels had been trying for years to get her teeth fixed, but it always cost too much.
When her story got out, dentists wanted to help her. One of them, Maryann Udy, called McDaniels and offered her a new smile for free. McDaniels wasn't sure at first, so she called her mother. She told McDaniels that Udy was her angel. “You need to do it,” she told her daughter.
The surgery was long and difficult. It took weeks for the swelling(肿块) to go down, and several more months before McDaniels' new smile was ready. Later that year, she looked at her old photos online and smiled. “I loved her,” she said. “She's grateful to be in less pain and to be on the path to a new smile. Sometimes, though, it feels like something is missing from who she was.” Still, she loves taking selfies and admiring her new appearance. “I looked good before,” she said. “I look even better now.”

Everyone wants to grow to be a better person. For me, growth means facing challenges and learning from them.

I started to study harder and asked my teacher for help whenever I had questions. After a few weeks, I got a good grade in the maths exam. I was so happy and proud of myself.
This experience taught me that I can overcome difficulties if I try my best. I also learned to ask for help when I need it. Now I am more confident in my studies and believe I can grow better day by day.
