In a remote rainforest on the Hawaiian island, Bernie Krause kneels silently, adjusting a pair of microphones covered in leaves. Around him, all lives sing in harmony. But Krause isn’t just listening; he’s recording an ecosystem’s acoustic (声学的) DNA — a soundscape that may soon disappear. For over 50 years, this 84-year-old bioacoustician has travelled to Earth’s most threatened habitats, recording what he calls “nature’s grand orchestra (管弦乐队).” His mission To preserve the planet’s acoustic heritage before human noise silences it forever.
Krause’s journey began unconventionally, In the 1960s, he was a session musician for Motown and played synthesizer with the band Beaver & Krause. But a key moment came in 1968 when he recorded a forest for an album. “I noticed each creature occupied its own acoustic space, like instruments in an orchestra,” he recalls. This revelation birthed his life’s work — soundscape ecology (声景生态学).
Armed with recording equipment, Krause has since captured over 5,000 hours of sound from 15,000 species across every continent. In 1988, he recorded a forest alive with birdsong. After selective tree cuttings, which woodcutters claimed “didn’t harm wildlife”, he returned. Everywhere he looked, the grass seemed unchanged. But actually, it was damaged. Over 50% of species’ voices had disappeared. “The silence,” Krause says, “was louder than any chainsaw (锯子).”
For Krause, sound is more than data; it’s emotional memory. He recalls a recording of a pack in Algonquin Park. When he played it back, a young wolf approached his speaker. “It recognized its family’s voices,” he smiles. “That connection-between species, across the acoustic web-is what we’re serving.”
As earphones pick up a rare Hawaiian honeycreeper’s call, Krause shuts his eyes. “Listen,” he whispers. “That bird might not sing here in ten years. But on my hard disk, it’ll sing forever.”

For more than 3,500 years, the remains of the Xiaohe people lay undisturbed in Xinjiang until they were unearthed in 1979. Among the treasures dug up was the oldest preserved cheese in the world, spotted around the remains’ neck.
Now a team of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences reports the first genetic (基因的) analysis of the cheese. Their results give us a vivid account of a rich Bronze Age culture that exchanged animals with other neighbouring peoples and may have helped spread cheese around East Asia, reflecting their cross-cultural communication. Just why they were buried with the stuff, though, remains imperfectly understood.
During their analysis, the team identified the DNA from a goat whose milk went into the cheeses, before comparing it with 185 previously sequenced goat genes. The genetic profile of the Xiaohe goat was similar to that of goats belonging to ancient Eurasian Steppe people, meaning the Xiaohe may have learned cheese-making from them.
All the Xiaohe cheeses would have been produced by drying kefir, a milk-based drink made with bacteria (细菌) such as Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens. The team, therefore, sequenced the DNA of that one bacterium and compared it with 15 modern varieties in order to identify its place within that species’ family tree. Their analysis showed that it belonged to a subspecies that could have spread with kefir-making customs from Xinjiang to regions including Tibet.
The team suspect that the cheese was an attractive alternative to raw milk. But it is possible that it was the kefir drink, rather than the cheese, that was the main attraction, says Paul Kindstedt, a cheese chemist and historian who was not involved in the research. It holds about 1% alcohol by volume. People in Mongolia today use kefir to make milk-based alcohol; the Xiaohe may have done so too.
“Ancient-cheese DNA analysis-of which this may be the first example-could reveal secrets about numerous other cultures. There are dairy remains on 7,000-year-old European pots, for example, and cheese may also have been used in ancient Egyptian burial practices,” says Dr Kindstedt.

The rapid development in artificial intelligence or AI, has had the effect of bothering and transforming socioeconomic activities across industries ranging from health, trade, education and even the improvement of climate change.
However, as industries and governments across the globe are ready to take advantage of these possibilities, experts added that Africa needs supportive policies and improved facilities to seize the limitless opportunities of AI to quicken its development. Moreover, the experts said that the continent should not wait to have the rules in place in order to welcome the technology.
Fayaz King, an expert in digital public facilities from Zimbabwe, said AI has the potential to contribute up to $1.2 trillion to the African economy by 2030, representing a 5.6 percent increase in the continent’s GDP by 2030. Alfred Ongere, an information technology expert and the founder of Artificial Intelligence Kenya, a nongovernmental organization, said it is of much importance to manage AI in African countries because it can potentially be used in spreading misinformation, fake news, and disinformation. However, policymakers should first improve the state of the AI ecosystem.
Despite arguing against proper control by African governments, Ongere said that it is still significant to protect consumers from the risks caused by the uncontrolled application of AI on the continent. He appealed to African governments to develop an AI road map or policy paper without forcing rules that could potentially damage a promising sector. “AI-focused solutions should solve real-world challenges such as rural development and financial crisis. More importantly, efforts should be directed toward ensuring the commercial viability (商业可行性) of these solutions,” Ongere said.
King said that managing AI in Africa should deal with moral considerations such as data privacy, prejudice and transparency (透明性). As the use of AI continues to expand, it is likely that more countries will follow in introducing such regulations. “The question of management, especially in the African context is that Africa is not mature to have complete and sound rules on AI because Africa lacks the level of technology development that exists in developed nations.” King said.
