Text 1
M: What do you usually do in your spare time
W: I spend most of my spare time listening to rock music. And you
M: I love to collect stamps and take photos. I have put up many pictures on my bedroom wall.
Text 2
M: I love our apple tree. It’s been there for years. I wonder how old it is.
W: Well, grandad told me that his father planted it when he was a kid. So, pretty old!
M: I wonder if our dad used to play in it when he was small!
Text 3
M: Sit down, please, Kate. You’ve won the school poetry competition. There’s a prize for you. Congratulations! I will give you the prize in front of your class.
W: Thank you, Mr Smith.
Text 4
W: National Bank, can I help you
M: Yes, please. What are your business hours
W: We open at 9 and close at 4 during the week. On Saturday we close one hour earlier at 3 and we’re closed on Sunday.
Text 5
W: Make sure to feed Charlie. Don’t worry about taking him out again. He does not like to go out in the rain, because he pulled the whole time and then rolled around everywhere when we got back.
M: Exactly, he hates rain.
Text 6
M: We’re going away for the weekend. We’re renting a nice little house in the forest.
W: That sounds very relaxing. I’d love to get out of the city for a few days.
M: You should just go on a holiday somewhere.
W: I would, but I’ve got no one to go with, and I’m too scared to travel on my own.
M: I used to travel alone a lot before I met Jennifer. It’s not as scary as you think.
W: I’ll think about it. I just want to lie on a beach and read a good book.
Text 7
M: Anna, what’s up
W: Nothing special. It is reported that the rain won’t stop until noon, and it will be sunny then. But there will be strong wind late in the afternoon.
M: That’s terrible. We can’t go bike riding or see a film.
W: Right. I think we’d better watch TV this afternoon.
M: Sounds like a good idea. But I’m going to clean up my room. Mum will be pleased about it.
W: You just gave me an idea. I think I’ll do the same.
M: OK. Oh, when will she be back
W: I have no idea. She took a taxi to the company this morning and she will get her car in the garage after work.
M: I see.
Text 8
M: Let’s divide up the tasks.
W: OK. John, you’re good at socializing so maybe you can make the guest list.
M: No problem. I also enjoy online marketing tasks, so leave it to me. And Edward knows some really good musicians that do events like this one. He can be on organizing the musicians.
W: Nice. I’ve got experience in graphic design so I’m happy to design the invitations.
M: Great. Do you mind designing the posters too I don’t think any other of us is good at designing.
W: Sure, it’ll be fun. The invitations are more important so I guess I’ll design them first. But who will be in charge of sending them out
M: Since I’m making the guest list, I should send out the invitations, too.
W: Great. Nancy’s brother Tim works in the Paramount Hotel, so I think she is the best person to do the room reservations.
M: Isn’t she taking care of her mother at the hospital these days
W: Oh, her mother is recovered now. Nancy just called and said she was on the train back.
Text 9
M: So here we go, I’ll tell you all the things you need to know. My son Rick is usually pretty quiet. He loves playing computer games, but my wife and I don’t allow him to play for too long. When he finishes his homework, please give him a glass of milk and some cookies. The cookies are on the top shelf of the cupboard.
W: Okay. What about little Daisy
M: She is younger and more active. She’s crazy about dolls and can play with them for hours. She loves singing, so don’t be surprised if she asks you to watch her performance.
W: Ha-ha, lovely. What about dinner
M: It’s in the refrigerator. You should heat it up and give it to them around 7:00 pm. Put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher when they’re done. Don’t be shy, Linette. If you’re hungry, just help yourself.
W: Thanks. I already had my dinner. What about their bedtime
M: As for Daisy, she must go to bed before 9:00 pm. Rick can stay up for another half an hour. Oh, one more thing, please don’t leave the house until I return.
W: Got it. Have a nice evening, Mr Cells.
M: Thank you. I should be back from work by midnight.
Text 10
M: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the South Coast Gardens, founded in 1932 by the Johnson family. I’m Handerson. Very pleased to have this chance to keep you company. As is known across the world, the Gardens covers eight acres and has more than 8,000 varieties of plants. The old family house holds one of the world’s largest collections of rare books. Besides, it also holds a collection of the 19th century British, European, and American paintings, rare coins, furniture, and so on. You’ll have time to visit the collections after lunch, following our walk through the gardens. It’s certain that you’ll enjoy the Gardens, which is divided into an Eastern tea garden, a tropical rose rainforest, the southwestern desert, and an English rose garden, considered to be one of the most beautiful rose gardens in the country. It’s a great place where you can appreciate a variety of roses with distinct features and enjoy English rose tea if you’re willing to. If you have any questions during today’s tour, please don’t hesitate to ask me. Now if you follow me along the stone path to your right, we’ll begin our tour.

根据第四段中“To truly grasp the essence of Cantonese, I knew that studying alone wasn’t enough—I needed first-hand experience. So, I took a gap year to pack my bags for Hong Kong, a city featuring the lively heartbeat of Cantonese culture.”
根据第三段中“Learning Cantonese posed challenges, such as unfamiliar characters, complex tones, and different grammar structures, yet I persevered.” 再根据第三段中“Immersed in textbooks and available online courses, I practised the tones everyday until my pronunciation flowed naturally. Cantonese dramas and music also played a role in familiarizing me with its rhythm.”、第四段中“Buried in its busy streets and daily conversations, from casual chats to food ordering, I found myself enveloped in a linguistic wonderland.”和第五段中“My explorations extended beyond the streets. I enrolled in formal language classes that offered professional guidance.” 故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段中“It has changed into more than just a linguistic pursuit; it grants me a passport to sincere connections, profound insights, and heartfelt admiration for its one-of-a-kind culture.”

根据第二段中的“She reviews a huge volume of research showing that ‘single-session interventions’ (SSIs) can produce important turning points in people’s mental health, reducing symptoms (症状) of depression, anxiety, substance abuse and disordered eating.”

根据第一段中的“A few days ago, I took an online course about neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) and the ways we can teach our brains to build new connections that break old habits and thinking patterns.”、第二段中的“She reviews a huge volume of research showing that ‘single-session interventions’ (SSIs) can produce important turning points in people’s mental health, reducing symptoms (症状) of depression, anxiety, substance abuse and disordered eating.”
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“A few days ago, I took an online course about neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) and the ways we can teach our brains to build new connections that break old habits and thinking patterns. I learned we can build qualities like kindness as if they were muscles, in order to become new and better people.”
根据第二段中“The outcome demonstrated the overjustification effect, which occurs when external stimulation decreases a person’s internal motivation to perform a behaviour or engage in an activity.”(结果表明,当外部刺激降低了一个人行动或参与活动的内在动机时,就会出现过度合理化效应。)
根据第二段中“After money was removed, the group that was previously paid to play showed less motivation to complete the task than the group that was never paid and only did the puzzle for enjoyment.”(在钱被拿走后,之前被付钱玩的一组比从未被付钱只为享受而玩拼图的一组表现出更少的动力来完成任务。)
根据第三段中“According to the self-determination theory, three conditions are essential for people to feel internally motivated and perform at their best: autonomy, freedom from external restrictions; competence, the need to feel capable; and relatedness, the need to feel connected with others.”(根据自决理论,三个条件对人们感到内在动力并发挥最佳表现至关重要:自主,不受外部限制;能力,感觉有能力的需要;以及相关性,感觉与他人有联系的需要。)
根据最后一段中“While the overjustification effect can reduce motivation, some strategies can lower its impact. One is to focus on providing feedback and recognition rather than concrete rewards. For instance, praising an individual’s effort or acknowledging their accomplishments can maintain their internal motivation.”(虽然过度合理化效应会降低动机,但一些策略会降低其影响。
36.D 上文“When everything goes wrong, always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. Because it’s not what the world takes away from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left that counts.”提到了遇到困难的时候,我们应该怎样做,选项D(这里有一些建议可以在你最需要的时候激励你。)
37.E 下文“That’s a good thing because we often won’t move unless life forces us to.”说明不顺利的生活可能是让我们前进的动力,选项E(有时候,生活关上了门,因为是时候前进了。)
38.A 下文“Every time you get hurt, you heal. After darkness there is always light—you are reminded of this every morning, but still you often forget, and instead choose to believe that the night will last forever. It won’t. Nothing lasts forever.”说明生活中的不顺利不是永远的,选项A(生活中的一切都是暂时的。) 故选A项。
39.G 小标题“Complaining changes nothing.”和下文“It’s not over if you’ve lost; it’s over when you do nothing but complain about it.”说明抱怨改变不了什么,只知道抱怨,不去尝试的话,那什么也收获不了,选项G(尝试做一些伟大的事情而失败,总比什么都不做而成功好。)
40.B 小标题“The best thing you can do is keep going.”和上文“Don’t be afraid to get back up—to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again.”

One possible version:
Dear Jack,
I am Li Hua, a member of the English club. I am writing to give some advice on the weekly activity held by our English club.
For now, the only activity every week is watching an English movie, which is beneficial for students to practise their listening and learn about foreign cultures. However, it is not an effective way for students to improve their oral English. Therefore, I suggest that we add an English forum after watching movies, where students can express their feelings and opinions freely about the plots, or the characters from the movie.
Hopefully, my advice can be taken into consideration and the club members can have a better time joining our club.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
I was both excited and nervous about this new challenge. Ten chin-ups seemed like a significant leap from where I had started, but the belief my trainer had in me fueled my determination. I accepted the challenge and got to work. Every morning, I pushed myself harder than before. The numbers slowly climbed: three, four, five and then seven chin-ups. It was challenging, but I remembered the lesson that I had learned. The most difficult tasks can be achieved through consistent effort and belief in oneself.
Finally, one morning, it happened. I pulled myself up to the bar and completed ten consecutive chin-ups. I couldn’t contain my excitement and joy. I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. I achieved my goal through persistence. I had made it a reality. As I continue my fitness journey, I carry this lesson with me: no matter how daunting the obstacle may seem, the belief and persistence can help me overcome it. It’s not just about physical strength but also about mental fortitude and the power of setting and achieving goals.

When people ask about my experience of learning Cantonese, I recount a journey driven by unending curiosity and a strong desire to connect with a dynamic culture.
Growing up in a Russian family, my fascination with languages grew thanks to my father, a language expert. It’s during a cultural appreciation class in junior high that I was first introduced to the world of Hong Kong films, famous for their characteristic action-packed dramas and storytelling styles. However, what really amazed me was the uniqueness of the language, Cantonese, which sparked a urgent need within me to explore it and the rich culture behind. This marked the beginning of a thrilling linguistic journey.
Learning Cantonese posed challenges, such as unfamiliar characters, complex tones, and different grammar structures, yet I persevered. Immersed in textbooks and available online courses, I practised the tones everyday until my pronunciation flowed naturally. Cantonese dramas and music also played a role in familiarizing me with its rhythm.
To truly grasp the essence of Cantonese, I knew that studying alone wasn’t enough—I needed first-hand experience. So, I took a gap year to pack my bags for Hong Kong, a city featuring the lively heartbeat of Cantonese culture. Buried in its busy streets and daily conversations, from casual chats to food ordering, I found myself enveloped in a linguistic wonderland. Within a few months, my Cantonese proficiency flourished, fueling a surge of confidence.
My explorations extended beyond the streets. I enrolled in formal language classes that offered professional guidance. Through hard work, I successfully completed all the courses in Cantonese Linguistics. Since then, I’ve been passionately committed to spreading the Cantonese culture, ensuring its richness reaches a wider audience.
Today, I continue my Cantonese voyage with unflagging enthusiasm. It has changed into more than just a linguistic pursuit; it grants me a passport to sincere connections, profound insights, and heartfelt admiration for its one-of-a-kind culture.

A few days ago, I took an online course about neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) and the ways we can teach our brains to build new connections that break old habits and thinking patterns. I learned we can build qualities like kindness as if they were muscles, in order to become new and better people.
I had been inspired by Little Treatments, Big Effects, a new book by Jessica Schleider, the founding director of the Lab for Scalable Mental Health at Northwestern University, Illinois. She reviews a huge volume of research showing that “single-session interventions” (SSIs) can produce important turning points in people’s mental health, reducing symptoms (症状) of depression, anxiety, substance abuse and disordered eating.
Many of Schleider’s SSIs are primarily aimed at young people who might struggle with some of the stresses of growing up. I tried out one called Project Personality, which aims to teach people about our potential for change. Over a series of case studies and exercises, I learned about our capacity to break negative thought cycles and overcome the fears that are preventing us from living a full life. As a science writer, I found much of the material was familiar. But I can imagine it would be an empowering message for someone who believes that their sadness or anxiety is an inescapable element of their make-up.
It would be ridiculous to claim SSIs are some kind of cure-all for all who try them. While some may find SSIs to be as effective as more intensive treatment, many others will need greater assistance. SSIs may still be a useful starting point while those people wait to access other treatments, however, and they can also be used as a preventative tool for those who are sensitive to mental health issues, but haven’t developed full-blown symptoms yet.
The huge advantage of SSIs is their easy accessibility. According to a recent study, 1 in 2 people will develop a mental health condition over their lifetime. We should welcome any new approach that might relieve such symptoms.

Do you have a favourite sport Are you passionate about sewing or reading Typically, you engage in these activities simply because you enjoy them. Would you be taken aback by knowing the overjustification(过度合理化) effect that when you are rewarded for your beloved activities, your desire to participate in them diminishes
Edward Deci, a psychology professor, conducted a series of experiments, in one of which Deci divided the participants into two groups: one was paid to complete a puzzle, and the other was not paid to. After money was removed, the group that was previously paid to play showed less motivation to complete the task than the group that was never paid and only did the puzzle for enjoyment. The outcome demonstrated the overjustification effect, which occurs when external stimulation decreases a person’s internal motivation to perform a behaviour or engage in an activity.
According to the self-determination theory, three conditions are essential for people to feel internally motivated and perform at their best: autonomy, freedom from external restrictions; competence, the need to feel capable; and relatedness, the need to feel connected with others. In Deci’s experiment, money acted as a tie, which reduced participants’ autonomy, a crucial component of internal motivation, discouraging them from experiencing the freedom from external restrictions. The pressure to perform for the money lessened the pleasure and freedom felt by those who were doing the puzzle merely for fun.
But if external stimulation is tied to performance, the overjustification effect is less influential. For example, being rewarded for studying is unlikely to decrease internal motivation because the grade depends upon actually doing well rather than just going through the motions.
While the overjustification effect can reduce motivation, some strategies can lower its impact. One is to focus on providing feedback and recognition rather than concrete rewards. For instance, praising an individual’s effort or acknowledging their accomplishments can maintain their internal motivation. Additionally, allowing individuals to have autonomy and control over their tasks also works. By giving them the freedom to choose how they complete tasks, individuals are more likely to be internally motivated and experience a greater sense of satisfaction and engagement.

When everything goes wrong, always look at what you have, instead of what you have lost. Because it’s not what the world takes away from you that counts; it’s what you do with what you have left that counts. 36.
Pain is part of growing.
37. That’s a good thing because we often won’t move unless life forces us to. When times are tough, remind yourself that no pain comes without a purpose. Remember that there are two kinds of pain: pain that hurts and pain that changes you. When you roll with life, instead of resisting it, both kinds help you grow.
38.
Every time you get hurt, you heal. After darkness there is always light—you are reminded of this every morning, but still you often forget, and instead choose to believe that the night will last forever. It won’t. Nothing lasts forever.
Complaining changes nothing.
Those who complain the most accomplish the least. 39. It’s not over if you’ve lost; it’s over when you do nothing but complain about it. If you believe in something, keep trying. Don’t let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future.
The best thing you can do is keep going.
Don’t be afraid to get back up—to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again. Don’t let a hard lesson harden your heart. Life’s best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes. There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. 40.
A.Everything in life is temporary.
B.And even if you fall short, keep going.
C.Your scars are symbols of your strength.
D.Here are a few tips to inspire you when you need them most.
E.Sometimes life closes doors because it’s time to move forward.
F.When you feel like quitting, remember that sometimes things can be right eventually.
G.It’s always better to attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed.

About six months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there was one personal trainer who worked out. He did his routine with such quiet determination that he made it all look very easy. When I wanted to quit, I watched him push himself to his own limits, and I found myself motivated to work hard.
Several weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups (引体向上) effortlessly. I asked him if I could try a chin-up. I had never tried before. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to step up to the bar. I pulled myself up without thinking. Once…then twice. I had no strength left. I told him that was all I had, so he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for a third and a fourth pull. It felt so good and I smiled from ear to ear.
The next day when I was done with my workout, I asked him to spot me again. Again, I did two. Again on day three and so on. I thought it was pitiful that I could only do two, but he said he was impressed with my chin-ups, explaining that most people couldn’t do them at all. He further told me that if I practised every day, I would be doing five or six in no time.
I just jumped at it and gave it a try. A few months had passed since that memorable day at the gym. I continued to work on my chin-ups, slowly but steadily. With each passing week, I could feel my strength increasing and my determination growing.
One day, as I approached the chin-up bar, my trainer noticed the determination in my eyes. He smiled and said, “You know, you’ve come a long way in such a short time. I believe it’s time to set a new goal for yourself.” I asked, “What do you have in mind ” He replied, “How about aiming for ten consecutive (连续不断的) chin-ups I have no doubt that you can achieve it with your insistence.”

I was both excited and nervous about this new challenge.
