Text 1
M: Before feeding the dog, I’m going to clear up its house.
W: It’s about time. Look at the mess! It smells terrible.
Text 2
W: How do you stay fit, David
M: Well, I used to enjoy running, but after hurting my knee, my doctor suggested not running that often. So nowadays I mainly swim. And I do quite like going cycling sometimes, though.
Text 3
M: When will the meeting begin
W: According to the schedule, it should start at 9:30, and it will last for an hour and a half.
Text 4
M: Are you all right, Maria What’s wrong with your neck
W: Ah, I’ve just fallen over in the snow and I’ve got a terrible pain in my arm, not my neck.
M: Give me your hand and I’ll help you up.
W: OK, thanks.
Text 5
W: This forest picture would go really well with the colours in our bedroom, and the sunflower one matches our kitchen.
M: I agree. And we can hang the beach picture over our sofa.
Text 6
M: Look at those boats! I’m thinking of buying one.
W: What You don’t need a boat. It’s a waste of money!
M: No, it isn’t. Think of all the summers we can spend on it!
W: But look at the price!
M: I was getting to that. With a little help from a friend, I could buy it. I just need to borrow $1,000.
W: You’re kidding, right
M: No, and I promise to pay you back very soon. Please!
W: Sorry, Billy. I’m broke. Anyway, I wouldn’t lend you money for a boat!
Text 7
W: Joseph, do you have any plans for the holidays
M: Yes, I’m going to Canada.
W: Wonderful! How are you going to travel there
M: I’ll fly to Winnipeg, and then I’ll have a 500-mile drive across Banff in the Rockies.
W: How long are you going to stay in Canada
M: From the 15th of December to the 11th of January.
W: That’s a long holiday! What are you going to do there
M: Well, I’ll stay in Winnipeg for one week to visit my relatives. Then, for the next three weeks, I’ll be skiing in Banff. There are also hot springs. I’ll go swimming.
W: Where are you going to stay in Banff
M: I’ll be staying with a friend and his family.
W: Sounds like a lot of fun!
Text 8
W: Adam, here is an interesting question from one of our listeners: What is something that you wish you could have done over For example, maybe something in your university life.
M: Well, there are a few things. I might change my major. I studied education, and I enjoy what I’m doing right now. But if I could go back to school and start over, I’d probably study chemistry or physics.
W: Interesting. Anything else you wish you would have done
M: I might have been more active in doing sports. I played football in high school, but in college, it seemed that there was nothing that could push me to actually go out and put my heart into it. I went to one training day and I felt kind of tired. I wish I hadn’t given up football so easily.
W: How about something that you did do but maybe now you wish you hadn’t
M: I played video games a lot in high school because that was the cool thing to do, but I don’t play them now. And looking back on it, I think it’s just a waste of time to follow the trend.
Text 9
W: What are you waiting for
M: Whatever you are cooking. It smells wonderful. Biscuits Bread
W: It’s a disaster—that’s what it is.
M: Why It smells great.
W: Look at this bag. What does it say
M: Salt.
W: Exactly. I think I might have used that instead of sugar by accident. If I have, the cake will be a failure. I will have wasted four eggs, butter and lots of other materials.
M: Oh, I hope not.
W: Well, we’ll know for sure in 10 minutes, when it comes out of the cooker.
M: I can’t wait to try it.
W: It has to be left to cool for another 20 minutes—that’s if I’ve made it correctly, which I doubt.
M: Don’t be so negative. You’re usually so careful.
W: I have a lot on my mind at the moment and I’ve been doing a lot of silly things. Maybe I picked the wrong day for cooking, but I thought it would be something fun to do.
M: If nothing else, you’ve filled the house with the wonderful smell of the cake.
Text 10
M: Good afternoon, this is lunch time news.
A series of powerful tornadoes struck six American states over the weekend, killing at least 90 people, including workers in a candle factory in Mayfield, a Kentucky town, lakeside vacationers in Tennessee and residents in a nursing home in Arkansas.
Dozens of night-shift employees began to work in the candle factory in Mayfield when the terrible disaster happened. The workers sheltered in the bathroom area supposed to be the safest part of the building. But it may not have been of any use because the tornado was so big. Ten more people remain missing.
Judy Burton is a Mayfield local who spoke to the reporter about the storm this morning. She said that she was able to take shelter in the basement of her apartment building before the tornado hit. Local officials said the fire station was seriously damaged and most of the town’s police cars were destroyed. Many buildings were reduced to nothing. Burton was so worried about her old neighbour, Steve, as he was unable to escape with ruins around him.
A
根据文章Craft False Creek, VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA部分中的“In the 1930s, the Vancouver Salt Company’s processing plant was housed here.” 故选A。
根据文章Liberty Hotel, BOSTON部分中的“The building’s fresh purpose was designed in cooperation with teams of preservationists and historians to ensure its past life was never forgotten.”
根据文章El Ateneo Grand Splendid, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA部分中的“The location was purchased and rebuilt as a bookstore in the early 2000s.”和Dominicanen, MAASTRICHT, NETHERLANDS部分中的“In 2006 it was converted into a bookstore, maintaining much of its traditional artwork and architecture.”
根据第二段中的“Today, I am fortunate to live around the corner from the Gold Coast Public Library in Glen Head and a short walk to the Sea Cliff Children’s Library.”
根据第三段中的“Sure, the library in Franklin Square was the place where I was introduced to Judy Blume’s novels.”
根据最后一段中的“My students are often amazed that they can check out books via their smartphones and virtually visit a variety of Long Island libraries. The app used by Nassau and Suffolk county public libraries, as well as the college library, makes their homework easier by helping them find resources. Even though they can’t always easily visit their local libraries, the library is always with them.”
故选A。
C
根据第二段“Using this theory, geologists at Utrecht University discovered that Argoland hadn’t really disappeared but survived as a ‘very extended and fragmented collection’ under the islands to the east of Indonesia.”
根据画线词上文“Unlike other continents like Africa and South America, which broke neatly into two pieces, Argoland split into many smaller fragments…”可知,阿尔戈大陆不像非洲和南美洲那样是整齐地分裂成两部分,阿尔戈大陆分裂成许多较小的碎片,再结合画线词下文“…which made it difficult for scientists to locate and study the continent’s geological features.”
根据第一段中“Do you have a suit or dress in the closet that you haven’t worn for years but are reluctant to get rid of Maybe you say, ‘I can’t throw that away because I paid good money for it.’ If you recognize this in yourself, then you are suffering from commitment to the sunk cost fallacy(沉没成本谬误).”
根据第二段中“When asked which trip to take, 54% chose Michigan despite the reasonable choice being Wisconsin, because they had made a greater initial investment.” 故选A。
根据第三段中“Sunk cost fallacy takes place when we let emotions cloud our decisions.”以及“Instead, we base decisions on past costs, ignoring present and future costs and benefits.”
根据最后一段中“No one can deny the fact that we benefit a lot from perseverance. So our society loves to emphasize perseverance. Never give up! Don’t waste.”可知,此处作者指出人们可以从毅力中获益良多;同时根据本段中“But only you know the right path for you. Sometimes walking away is the hardest choice of all. You might realize a path you’re on is no longer the right one or never was. That’s a painful realization.”
36.F 根据上文“When faced with change, most people go down one of two roads: they either respond or react.”以及后文“Reacting, on the other hand, literally means to meet one action with another.”
37.B 根据上文“Reacting, on the other hand, literally means to meet one action with another. It’s instant. Responding creates more space between an event and what you do about it. In that space, you give immediate emotions room to breathe and you gain a better understanding of what is happening. Consequently, you rarely regret responding.”
38.A 根据后文“You can do all the affect labeling and meditation in the world. Yet if you regularly inhabit reactive environments, it’s hard not to become more reactive.”
39.C 根据本段内容“When I spend too much time on social media, I’m more likely to roar at my children, feel restless, and my competence in thinking deeply worsens significantly. Yet I’m becoming increasingly concerned that it’s not just me, but our entire culture that is making us more reactive at a time when we need our humanity more than ever.”
40.D 根据后文“But distinctly naming the problem is an important first step. We can also reduce reactivity by intentionally creating more responsive environments. We can read print books instead of digital versions. We can go to the gym or take walks without phones. If we desire to navigate our challenging times, we must find ways to preserve the space between stimulus (刺激) and response; that is to say we must find ways to preserve our humanity.”

One possible version:
A new me
Hello, everyone!
I always felt anxious and stressful at senior high school at first because I was afraid of being left behind. I was worried about so many things that I couldn’t sleep well and focus on my study.
Then, I read a book called Who Moved My Cheese which made me realize that making changes can make a difference to life. Instead of just worrying about my study, I would make a schedule for my study and finish the to-do list. Rather than being anxious the whole day, I would do some exercises regularly and listen to music to relieve my stress and tiredness after studying, which also helped me feel more energetic.
Now, I stop feeling upset about something new. Instead, I would also always remind myself to smile as often as possible and stay positive about everything that is going to happen.
Thank you for your listening.
One possible version:
“I used to be a cyclist,” he said. “Competing in cycling events was what I loved and enjoyed.” Then he told me why he stopped cycling. While cycling with his friends one day, he was hit by a car severely by accident. Although immediately taken to the hospital, he was told by the doctor that he might never walk again. He refused to believe that. So, he was determined not to let the accident prevent him from walking again.
His great determination paid off, and he was able to walk again. His love for life and for fitness is what makes him cross the bridge many times. Moved by his story, I told him that it was an honour to meet a role model like him and that I wanted to make friends with him. He agreed happily. I shook his hand, thanked him for having a chat with me, and let him continue with his exercise. As I walked away, my admiration for him grew even more because of his attitude to life.

Instead of tearing down them and building anew, architects have repurposed some older structures, leading to stunning beauty.
Craft False Creek, VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Among the growing scenes of skyscrapers in Vancouver, this building stands out for both its history and architecture. In the 1930s, the Vancouver Salt Company’s processing plant was housed here. Today, the building is home to Craft Beer Market, which has kept many of the architectural elements of the original structure in place.
El Ateneo Grand Splendid, BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA
This beautiful bookshop has the distinction of starting its life as a theatre. Teatro Gran Splendid opened its door in May 1919 and hosted a long list of performances before being turned into a cinema. The location was purchased and rebuilt as a bookstore in the early 2000s.
Liberty Hotel, BOSTON
Located just steps from the Boston Common, the Liberty Hotel now lies at the former Charles Street Jail. Its 298 rooms and suites were inspired by the location, which last housed prisoners in 1990. The building’s fresh purpose was designed in cooperation with teams of preservationists and historians to ensure its past life was never forgotten.
Dominicanen, MAASTRICHT, NETHERLANDS
Situated within a church that dates back to 1294, the former Dominicanen has a long history. It served as a Catholic church for hundreds of years before being changed to storage space for Napoleon Bonaparte’s army. In 2006 it was converted into a bookstore, maintaining much of its traditional artwork and architecture.
( )21.What did Craft False Creek use to be
A.A factory. B.A market.
C.A museum. D.A theatre.
( )22.What do we know about Liberty Hotel

C.It has hosted a long list of performances.
D.It lies far away from the Boston Common.
( )23.What do El Ateneo Grand Splendid and Dominicanen have in common
A.Both were transformed from cinemas.

C.Both used to undertake religious functions.

When I was small, my mother and I would walk to our local library in Franklin Square. As we didn’t always have access to a reliable car, walking hand in hand was the most convenient way to get anywhere. It was at story time for children that both my mother and I made lasting friendships.
Today, I am fortunate to live around the corner from the Gold Coast Public Library in Glen Head and a short walk to the Sea Cliff Children’s Library. My 18-month-old son, Colin, and I find ourselves in Sea Cliff several times a week, meeting and making friends. Well, that is what many people don’t understand—a library is more than books; it’s a community.
Sure, the library in Franklin Square was the place where I was introduced to Judy Blume’s novels. But it was also the place where I got my first e-mail address in 1997. At the library, friends and I learned how to research colleges and search for scholarships on the Internet. The library was the place where we sometimes giggled (咯咯地笑) too loudly, and where the librarians knew us by name. Their knowing our names wasn’t a bad thing. When I came home from my first term at Binghamton University, Mary LaRosa, the librarian at the Franklin Square library offered me my first teaching job.
I now teach reading at Nassau Community College. My students are often amazed that they can check out books via their smartphones and virtually visit a variety of Long Island libraries. The app used by Nassau and Suffolk county public libraries, as well as the college library, makes their homework easier by helping them find resources. Even though they can’t always easily visit their local libraries, the library is always with them.

Geologists have long been fascinated by a missing piece of Earth’s history—a lost continent called Argoland. Around 155 million years ago, the 5,000-kilometre continent broke off from Western Australia and began drifting(漂移), leaving behind a basin deep below the ocean known as the Argo Abyssal Plain. But where did Argoland actually go
The seabed structure suggests that the continent drifted northwestward and ended up in Southeast Asia. But surprisingly, there is no large continent hidden beneath those islands, only small continental fragments(碎片) surrounded by ancient oceanic basins. Using this theory, geologists at Utrecht University discovered that Argoland hadn’t really disappeared but survived as a “very extended and fragmented collection” under the islands to the east of Indonesia.
Unlike other continents like Africa and South America, which broke neatly into two pieces, Argoland split into many smaller fragments that were dispersed, which made it difficult for scientists to locate and study the continent’s geological features. However, with advanced technology and the discovery, scientists can now piece them together.
Tracing the continents is vital for understanding processes like the evolution of biodiversity. It could help explain something known as the mysterious Wallace line, which is an imaginary boundary that separates mammals, birds, and even early human species in Southeast Asian islands. The boundary has puzzled scientists because of how clearly it separates the island’s wildlife. To the west of the line are placental mammals like apes and elephants. But these are almost completely absent to the east, where you can find marsupials and cockatoos—animals typically associated with Australia. Researchers have theorized that this may be because Argoland carried its own wildlife away from Australia before it crashed into Southeast Asia, which helps explain why different species are found in different nations.
The story of Argoland is not one of complete disappearance but of transformation. As the world continues to evolve, this lost continent serves as a powerful symbol of the fragility of life on this planet, and a reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting the world that we live in.

Do you have a suit or dress in the closet that you haven’t worn for years but are reluctant to get rid of Maybe you say, “I can’t throw that away because I paid good money for it.” If you recognize this in yourself, then you are suffering from commitment to the sunk cost fallacy It occurs when we feel that we have invested too much to quit. This psychological trap causes us to stick with a plan even if it no longer serves us and the costs clearly outweigh the benefits.
Arkes and Blumer conducted a survey showing that people are influenced by sunk cost fallacy in their decisions. Participants imagined spending $100 on a ski trip to Michigan and $50 on Wisconsin, realizing later they were for the same weekend. They were told Wisconsin would be more enjoyable. When asked which trip to take, 54% chose Michigan despite the reasonable choice being Wisconsin, because they had made a greater initial investment.
Sunk cost fallacy takes place when we let emotions cloud our decisions. Once we’ve invested in a choice, we feel guilt or regret if we don’t follow through. We fail to realize that past costs won’t be recovered. Instead, we base decisions on past costs, ignoring present and future costs and benefits. This may be due to loss aversion (厌恶), where losses feel worse than gains. We avoid losses, making choices based on avoiding the “loss” of our past investment instead of considering the benefits gained if we don’t continue our commitment.
No one can deny the fact that we benefit a lot from perseverance. So our society loves to emphasize perseverance. Never give up! Don’t waste. But only you know the right path for you. Sometimes walking away is the hardest choice of all. You might realize a path you’re on is no longer the right one or never was. That’s a painful realization.
( )32.What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text

D.People’s clothes are becoming more expensive.
( )33.Why did more than half of the participants choose the trip to Michigan in the survey
A.To save more of the loss.
B.To appear more reasonable.
C.To make a greater investment.
D.To enjoy more of themselves.
( )34.When does “sunk cost fallacy” occur
A.When we don’t follow through our choices.
B.When we don’t continue our commitment.
C.When we stop feeling guilty and regretful.
D.When we make decisions based on past costs emotionally.
( )35.What is the author’s attitude towards “perseverance”
A.Favourable. B.Objective.
C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.

When faced with change, most people go down one of two roads: they either respond or react. 36. Reacting, on the other hand, literally means to meet one action with another. It’s instant. Responding creates more space between an event and what you do about it. In that space, you give immediate emotions room to breathe and you gain a better understanding of what is happening. Consequently, you rarely regret responding. 37.
There is plenty you can do internally to cultivate responsiveness. For instance, “affect labeling”, or naming your emotions, helps create space between you and a difficult situation. Meditation (冥想) is also beneficial. 38. You can do all the affect labeling and meditation in the world. Yet if you regularly inhabit reactive environments, it’s hard not to become more reactive.
39. When I spend too much time on social media, I’m more likely to roar at my children, feel restless, and my competence in thinking deeply worsens significantly. Yet I’m becoming increasingly concerned that it’s not just me, but our entire culture that is making us more reactive at a time when we need our humanity more than ever.
40. But distinctly naming the problem is an important first step. We can also reduce reactivity by intentionally creating more responsive environments. We can read print books instead of digital versions. We can go to the gym or take walks without phones. If we desire to navigate our challenging times, we must find ways to preserve the space between stimulus (刺激) and response; that is to say we must find ways to preserve our humanity.
A.But the external matters too.
B.But you often regret reacting.
C.I’ve experienced this first-hand.
D.There are no silver bullet solutions.
E.I have figured out how to deal with this.
F.Responding, related to responsibility, is considerate.
G.On the one hand, reacting is crucial for our humanity.

The most important change in a person’s life is the change of his or her attitude. Right attitudes produce right actions. Have you ever met someone who gave you a different view of life
On a Sunday morning, I saw something very interesting as I went to the greengrocer’s. To get there, I had to cross a bridge over railway tracks. The bridge was pretty high. A set of steep steps had to be climbed; then the bridge flattened out (变平), followed by coming down another set of steps. On my way back from the greengrocer’s, I saw an elderly gentleman running up the steps. After watching him run up the steps so fast, I thought that he could be in a rush.
Before I knew it, he had crossed the bridge, and then he ran back to where he started. To my surprise, he did not stop. He turned around, and then went up and down the bridge again. He was not struggling, and seemed to enjoy going up and down the bridge. Being a fitness fanatic (热衷于健美的人) myself, I admired his ability to cross the bridge so quickly. My curiosity got the better of me, and I came up to him to have a chat with him.
“Excuse me, sir. Are you training for an event ” I asked.
He stopped. “No, not training for an event. Well, I am training for life,” he said with a broad smile on his face as sweat rolled down his cheeks.
I told him that I had been looking for a role model of fitness, and that I hoped to be as strong as he is when I get to his age. He said that everyone has a choice about what they do with their life. “I am not different,” he added. With much admiration, I asked, “What drives you to maintain good health ”
Then he told me the accident he met with when he was young.
Paragraph 1:
“I used to be a cyclist,” he said.

Paragraph 2:
His great determination paid off, and he was able to walk again.
