Text 1
M: I seem to have lost my luggage.
W: Don’t worry. Let me attempt to assist you. Which flight were you on
M: Flight GT1006.
Text 2
W: Look at the time—9:00 pm. The concert was supposed to begin an hour ago.
M: Relax. These things never start on time. The stars always turn up late.
W: But my last bus is at 11:00 pm. That means I’ll miss some of the show.
Text 3
M: Juana, I am awfully sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. Shall we have a beer and forget the whole thing
W: OK, we can drop it this time. But don’t do it again.
Text 4
M: This dress would look nice on you, madam. I saw a picture of a movie star wearing one like this at a concert.
W: Yes, I like it, but I’m looking for something less expensive and more suitable for work.
Text 5
W: James didn’t even say “hi” when he passed by me today. I feel so hurt!
M: I wouldn’t be surprised, because maybe he didn’t notice you.
Text 6
W: Excuse me. I think I left my notebook on this table after finishing dinner. Have you seen it It’s red.
M: Oh, yes. I took it inside with the empty glasses when I cleared the table. I gave it to the manager, who put it with the other lost things. He keeps them all in the drawer of his desk.
W: I see. Where is he now
M: He’s on the phone in his office. Why don’t you go inside He’ll be finished in a minute.
Text 7
W: Hi, Tom, are you okay
M: Oh, I have got a cold again and I easily get tired in spring.
W: Why not try some exercise It will help a lot.
M: Well, you’re right, but I don’t have time to go to a gym. I have been too busy lately.
W: You don’t have to go to a gym. You can walk or ride a bicycle to work.
M: But I don’t have a bicycle.
W: Ah, I got it, but you see, our office is on the fifth floor. You can just walk up and down the stairs instead of taking a lift. That would be better than any exercise machine in the gym.
M: Oh, Mary, you really have a point there. I will have a try tomorrow.
Text 8
W: I think I will have to move out of my dormitory.
M: Why is that, dear I thought you had lots of friends there.
W: Oh, I do. That is part of the problem.
M: What do you mean
W: Well, people are constantly visiting me, and there seems to be a party every night.
M: Is it too noisy
W: It is. There is too much going on. I need to study.
M: What a pity! Your mother and I thought your roommates looked very nice when we visited you.
W: It is. For such a small place, it’s surprisingly warm. It’s a nice place to live.
M: Except for the noise.
W: Yes.
M: OK. Well, I’m busy with work at the moment, so I’ll ask your mother to start looking for new places for you to stay, or your brother can even help.
W: No, it’s OK, Dad. I’ll find somewhere myself. There are always rooms advertised on the college notice board. It won’t be hard to find something.
M: Great. Good luck with your search.
Text 9
M: Sheila Mccllenan is here with me today to talk about her daughter, Liz Sheila, a national gymnastics champion. Was Liz interested in gymnastics when she was little
W: When she was seven years old, she tried riding lessons but she didn’t take to that. Then she tried ballet but she didn’t seem to be naturally suited to it either. Gymnastics was the final choice she made a year later.
M: Have you done something to help her
W: Since she was fifteen, she’s had training courses every day. Someone had to drive her there and back. Bob couldn’t take the time off work so I tried to reach a part-time agreement with my boss. Originally I was a keen tennis player, but I thought Liz had more of a future than I did. So I put my interest on hold.
M: Gymnastics is a short career. Have you and Liz got plans for her future
W: Well, she helps out at a home for kids. She wants to keep that up, but most likely she’ll go to college and get a qualification so she can coach other people in gymnastics.
M: What do you think is the secret of Liz’s success
W: She’s bright and takes things in well, but she could never have succeeded in getting to this level if she weren’t so determined and didn’t make so many demands on herself.
Text 10
M: Welcome to our brand-new online English school. We have some exciting news to give you all. Firstly, during the summer vacation from June to August, you can book a one-to-one private lesson with a fully qualified native English speaker for just $10. After the summer vacation, the price is $20 per class. A class is 45 minutes long and you will receive a personal report afterwards. Something else we can offer is group classes. This is limited to five students per online class. Classes run every hour on the hour, 24 hours a day. The benefit of group classes is that you will meet other students from around the world. If you are interested in the group classes, you can have a free trial first. Afterwards, we have various packages available. The more you book, the cheaper the price is. Usually the classes are video classes, but if you prefer audio only, this is also acceptable. We have five different levels. We will make you take a placement test to move up through the levels. It is very easy. OK, any questions If there’s anything you want to know about our school, please feel free to ask. I’ll be glad to answer them.
A
根据“…choose a class of travel that suits your style: Economy or First Class (Premium)…”
根据Step 2: Book your trips部分中“After you purchase a Discovery Pass, you have up to one month to book your first trip.”
根据第二段“It was a pleasant outing—until a strong wave came. It was too strong for Abigail to hold onto the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her.”
根据第三段“I tried to stick with both of them. I wore myself out. She drifted away from me.” 故选A。
根据第四段“Directing Chase to swim to shore for help, Steven stayed behind…”
根据第五段“It was a tough go for the 7-year-old but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or paddle when he was tired, he’d rest and then set off again. It took Chase an hour to reach the shore. Once on solid ground, he ran to the nearest house and called for help.” 故选A。
C
根据文章第一段“However, all these observational studies have a fundamental weakness: they can identify the co-occurrence between vitamin D and a disease, but they can’t prove there is a cause-and-effect relation.”
根据文章第二段“To look at whether taking vitamin D had curative effects, Manson and her team started the world’s largest and most far-reaching randomized vitamin D trial.”及“The volunteers were almost evenly split between men and women, and 20 percent of the participants were black.”
根据文章第三段“The results came as a shock. Not only did vitamin D not reduce rates of cancer or heart disease, but the trial also found that vitamin D did not prevent or improve cognitive function, or reduce the risk of bone fractures(骨折).”及下一段“Levels have actually risen since then, meaning that most people don’t need to take extra vitamin D.”可推知,研究发现更新了人们对维生素D的认识。
根据文章最后一段“The ups and downs of vitamin D offer a lesson in humility. The relation between the vitamin and disease is far more complicated than it first seemed and a reminder that scientific understanding is always developing over time.” 故选A。
D
由第二段“That’s because technological progress is extremely fast. It’s only a matter of time. Such is the belief among certain parents that the technology is imminent and they’re wondering if their kids should learn a second language.”
由第四段中“It’s so hard for computers because translation doesn’t—or shouldn’t—involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, people need to understand a lot of information all at once.” 故选A项。
结合第一段“Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language ”(去外国旅行而不必担心用不同语言交流的麻烦,这不是很好吗 )和最后一段中“Therefore, we should doubt a machine that can’t understand our world like we do. If people from different cultures can upset each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better ”可知,本文主要讨论了科技的发展对翻译和沟通的影响,翻译不仅仅是翻译单词、句子和段落,确切地说,它是有关意思的转换,单词真正的意思是会随着语境的变化而变化的,作者认为,对于人类来说翻译得恰当尚且很困难,更不要说靠机器去翻译了,所以文章讨论的主题是语言障碍会不会因科技发展而变小,故D项“语言障碍真的会消失吗 ”是恰当的标题。
36.C 空前“In a flash, the ancient history of a few hours ago is swept away for the next ‘breaking news’.”(转眼间,几小时前的古老历史被下一条“突发新闻”取代。)
37.G 空前“Researchers introduce this world to the phrase, ‘noise bottleneck’. A noise bottleneck is where we are overwhelmed with so much information or noise that our cognitive abilities can’t keep up.”(研究人员向这个世界介绍了“噪声瓶颈”这个短语。
38.E 空后“We watch TV holding our phones, and we listen to music while shopping. However, the human brain might have structural limitation rooted in the cognitive architecture which causes the slowing down that occurs when two tasks are performed at the same time.”(我们拿着手机看电视,购物时听音乐。
39.A 空后“Say, ‘I will only read this magazine after dinner.’”(比如“我只会在晚饭后看这本杂志。”)
40.B 空前“Accept your limits—you’ll never read all the news. Accept you can only choose two or three and embrace that fact.”(接受你的局限——你不可能读到所有的新闻。

One possible version:
When faced with different opinions, we should try to reach agreement through friendly discussions and reasonable arguments.
Firstly, friendly discussions can create a good atmosphere for communication. What’s more, when opinions differ, discussing disputable issues in a friendly way does not mean that we have to completely give up our own perspective. While listening to others with an open mind, we should also dare to present reasonable arguments to support our thoughts. But do bear in mind that remaining calm is crucial to persuading others.
In short, we should communicate with others in a friendly manner and express our views as reasonably as possible, resolving the differences with honesty and frankness.
One possible version:
Throughout those difficult days in the hospital, I watched my uncle in a new light. He wasn’t the argumentative figure I had always seen (定语从句) at family gatherings. Instead, he was the core of strength and support of my family. His dedication to my father’s well-being, his comforting presence and his determined optimism became a source of inspiration for me during those difficult days. As my dad gradually recovered (as引导时间状语从句), I began to understand the deep bond between my dad and his brother, which was deepened in spite of their disagreements (定语从句).
From then on, the relationship between my dad and my uncle became closer. They no longer argued at every turn. Occasional arguments were merely a reflection of their passionate personalities. They got along in a harmonious way. It was unbelievable to watch (it作形式主语) them get to know each other again and become the best friends. The virtue of solidarity and friendship was shown in them. Witnessing my uncle’s devotion (动名词短语作主语) during my dad’s illness left a permanent impression on me, teaching me the true meaning of family and the power of love in adversity (现在分词作状语).

Chase Poust is a 7-year-old boy. He and his dad Steven, as well as his 4-year-old sister, Abigail, were out for a family boating trip on Florida’s St Johns River near Mandarin Point. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back end of the anchored (停泊的) boat while Steven was on deck fishing.
It was a pleasant outing—until a strong wave came. It was too strong for Abigail to hold onto the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her.
Steven jumped into the water but after realizing he couldn’t keep up with both kids, he was faced with a hard decision. “I told them I loved them because I wasn’t sure what’s going to happen,” Steven told News-4 JAX. “I tried to stick with both of them. I wore myself out. She drifted away from me.”
Directing Chase to swim to shore for help, Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or paddle when he was tired, he’d rest and then set off again. It took Chase an hour to reach the shore. Once on solid ground, he ran to the nearest house and called for help.
Rescuers arrived soon to search for Steven and Abigail. Miraculously, the two were found and rescued about an hour later—more than a mile away from the family’s abandoned boat.

Vitamin D was recognized a century ago as the cure for rickets, a childhood disease that causes weak bones. Then, in the early 2000s, a pile of studies suggested that low vitamin D levels could be a factor in cancer, cardiovascular (心血管的) disease, Parkinson’s disease and so on. This simple vitamin seemed to be a cure for whatever troubled us. However, all these observational studies have a fundamental weakness: they can identify the co-occurrence between vitamin D and a disease, but they can’t prove there is the cause-and-effect relation.
To look at whether taking vitamin D had curative effects, Manson and her team started the world’s largest and most far-reaching randomized vitamin D trial. The study followed nearly 26,000 healthy adults, randomized to receive either 2,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D or a placebo(安慰剂), for an average of 5.3 years. The volunteers were almost evenly split between men and women, and 20 percent of the participants were black.
The results came as a shock. Not only did vitamin D not reduce rates of cancer or heart disease, but the trial also found that vitamin D did not prevent or improve cognitive function, or reduce the risk of bone fractures (骨折). “The finding about fractures was a real surprise to many people,” Manson says.
In 2011, the Institute of Medicine established an expert committee to conduct a thorough analysis of all existing studies on vitamin D and health. The committee concluded that the bone-strengthening benefits of vitamin D remain steady when blood levels reach 12 to 16 nanograms per millilitre. They also found that there were no benefits to having levels above 20ng/ml. According to measurements of vitamin D levels in the general US population, most had levels of 20 ng/ml or more in 2011. Levels have actually risen since then, meaning that most people don’t need to take extra vitamin D.
The ups and downs of vitamin D offer a lesson in humility. The relation between the vitamin and disease is far more complicated than it first seemed and a reminder that scientific understanding is always developing over time.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, technology policy expert Alec Ross argued that, within ten years or so, we would be able to communicate with one another through small earpieces with built-in microphones. That’s because technological progress is extremely fast. It’s only a matter of time. Such is the belief among certain parents that the technology is imminent and they’re wondering if their kids should learn a second language.
It’s true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy of the data loaded into computers will make them cleverer at translating “Noes Bueno dormer mucho” into “It’s not good to sleep too much”. Replacing a word with its equivalent in the target language is actually an easy part of a translator’s job. But even this seems to be a difficult job for computers.
It’s so hard for computers because translation doesn’t—or shouldn’t—involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, people need to understand a lot of information all at once. Think about all the related clues that help us understand what someone is trying to say: volume, gesture, situations, and even your culture. All are likely to convey as much meaning as the words you use.
Therefore, we should doubt a machine that can’t understand our world like we do. If people from different cultures can upset each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, undoubtedly when it comes to conveying and interpreting meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place.
( )32.What does the underlined word “imminent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Ready. B.Confusing.
C.Unpractical. D.Coming.
( )33.Why is it hard for computers to replace a word with its equivalent
A.The real meaning of words can vary.
B.Their data is not rich enough.
C.Their accuracy needs big improvement.
D.A man’s soul hasn’t been breathed into them.
( )34.What view does the author hold about translation
A.Proper translation can be difficult for computers.
B.Slight differences don’t matter in translation.
C.Machines will translate our world properly.
D.Cultures need more attention than words used.
( )35.What is the best title for the text
A.An expert’s prediction
B.Travel without headache
C.The pleasure of translation
D.Will the language barrier (障碍) actually fall

Today, what we have, is an always-in-your-pocket, 24/7 news cycle. When you open a news app, you’ll notice a brief moment when the “old news” is still there. In a flash, the ancient history of a few hours ago is swept away for the next “breaking news”. 36. It’s endless, but you had better keep up.
Researchers introduce this world to the phrase, “noise bottleneck”. A noise bottleneck is where we are overwhelmed with so much information or noise that our cognitive abilities can’t keep up. 37. Thus, while our attention can watch hours of videos, our long-term learning processes can’t.
38. We watch TV holding our phones, and we listen to music while shopping. However, the human brain might have structural limitation rooted in the cognitive architecture which causes the slowing down that occurs when two tasks are performed at the same time.
In short, your brain is not as good as you think it is. Understanding the noise bottleneck allows us to fix it. So, here are three tips to get you going.
Clear your content—set up a new account on social media and follow only accounts or people that you think are really valuable.
Single-task—you don’t need to get rid of the phone but do get rid of the distractions. 39. Say, “I will only read this magazine after dinner.” Multitasking is for show; single-tasking is for pros.
Accept your limits—you’ll never read all the news. Accept you can only choose two or three and embrace that fact. 40. You’re getting more out of those few than that “super-productive” person on social media who says they read five books a week. After all, it’s better to have a little remembered than a lot forgotten.
A.Give yourself a time limit or restriction if it helps.
B.Don’t beat yourself up that you’re being unproductive.
C.Every second, you are presented with new information.
D.Breaking through the noise bottleneck is a legendary idea.
E.The matter is made worse by our modern addiction to multitasking.
F.Multitasking has dramatically changed the way we use information.
G.Our brains have limited resources, spreading across numerous functions.

I was not sure why my dad and my uncle always disagreed with each other in the beginning. They spent many Sundays sitting at opposite ends of the table, arguing about everything. I didn’t think they got along well.
When I was eighteen, I got a call in my college dorm that my dad was having a health problem. My mum picked me up at midnight, so I could be there the next day when my dad was scheduled to transfer to a better hospital. I didn’t sleep that night, not a while. I was nervous and almost crazy when we arrived at the hospital early the next morning before the transfer.
That morning, as my mum and I walked down the hallway of the hospital, we could see straight into my dad’s room. A tall man wearing a stylish suit stood beside my father’s bed with his back to us. In surprise, my mum said to me, “How nice it is for a doctor to come by to see your dad so early in the morning!” The man was quiet and still, looking down, but he was holding both of my dad’s hands in his own. It seemed not to be a typical doctor’s behaviour.
“It’s not a doctor,” I whispered softly to my mum. When the man turned around, we found that it was my uncle. However, little did I know I would continue to reflect on that quiet moment for decades. And it would be the beginning of something truly wonderful.
The hours that followed were some of the most hardest time of my youth. My dad had a serious stomach problem and had to be in hospital for quite a long time. My uncle stayed with us the entire time. For one thing, my uncle tried every way to get my dad to eat something. For another thing, he brought me healthy snacks and made sure I actually ate them even though I had no appetite. When my mother and I were scared that my dad’s illness would get worse, my uncle was always by our side.
Paragraph 1:
Throughout those difficult days in the hospital, I watched my uncle in a new light.

Paragraph 2:
From then on, the relationship between my dad and my uncle became closer.
