Text 1
M: Sue, that report on my desk has to be finished today. But I’m sick and can’t come to the office.
W: I see the report, Bill. I’ll finish it for you.
Text 2
M: What have you been doing since I last saw you at the party
W: I’ve been studying hard for my examinations. And you
M: I’ve been learning Japanese every evening.
Text 3
M: I’ve been taking courses at night for three years now.
W: Has it really been that long I remember that you started going to night school at the age of 19.
M: Yes, but it seems like only yesterday that I walked into my first class.
W: Time flies when you’re busy, doesn’t it
Text 4
W: I was so lucky to get a ticket to the concert last night. It was great fun. I went with my father.
M: What did you do after the concert
W: I went straight home because I had to finish my homework. OK, Tim. I have to go. See you in class tomorrow.
M: Bye. Anyway, I have to go home and finish my homework.
Text 5
W: Paul, you’re so wet! What happened
M: I forgot my raincoat, and it started raining heavily while I was at school! I had parked my car far from the class building, so I got completely wet walking back to it.
Text 6
W: Look, what a fine day it is!
M: Yes. It’s beautiful. Yesterday, it rained all day.
W: Well, sunshine often comes after the rain.
M: It’s certainly a nice day to do something outside. Do you have any good ideas
W: There is a forest outside the city. It’s really nice there. We can have a picnic there during the day and go camping at night.
M: Wonderful! Why don’t we start getting ready right now
W: All right. I’ll take care of the food, and you get the tent ready, OK
M: No problem.
Text 7
W: Hello, Peter! You look unhappy. What’s wrong
M: I failed my Chinese test again. I have tried my best. But I find it’s really difficult for me. I really don’t know what to do with it, Ann.
W: Don’t worry. I have a good idea. You are good at maths, and I do well in Chinese and science. Let’s help each other, OK
M: Great! When is available for you then
W: I go to the art club on Friday night and do volunteer work on the weekend, but I don’t have classes on Thursday afternoon.
M: I don’t have classes that afternoon, either.
W: That’s great!
Text 8
M: Hello, advisor. Can you tell me something about Smith House in our university
W: Sure. The building was finished in the middle of the 18th century and was used by the Thomas family. That’s of course how the house got its name. There are three floors. A front hall and a dining room are on the ground floor. A small gym is on the first floor.
M: Are there any washing machines in the house
W: Of course. They are located on the right corner of the second floor. But please do not use them after 11 o’clock.
M: Does it have a computer room
W: No. But a game room is on the second floor and you can find a guest room on the same floor.
M: Could we invite some friends to hold a party
W: We only allow parties on weekends.
Text 9
W: Hi, Jim. Why did it take you so long to answer the phone Were you playing computer games as usual
M: Not this time. I was taking a shower.
W: I called you yesterday, but you didn’t answer the phone.
M: Sorry. I was out shopping yesterday and left my phone at home. I saw that you’d called when I got back and I tried to call you back, but your phone was off.
W: Yeah. I went to a concert so I turned my phone off.
M: So what’s up
W: I want to invite you to my sister’s wedding party next Saturday. Would you like to be my guest
M: Sure. I bought a present for her yesterday. Can you come and pick me up on Saturday
W: Sure. The party begins at 3:00 pm. I’ll come and pick you up at 2:00.
M: Could you come twenty minutes earlier Megan is going to the party, too, and she needs a lift.
W: No problem. See you next Saturday.
Text 10
W: Good morning, everybody. I’m Mary Stone. Today I’m going to share with you my hurricane experience. Well, it was my first hurricane since my family moved here to North Carolina. Before it came, we had continual day warnings of it from the radio, the TV and the newspapers for a week. We had to get everything out of the yard. We didn’t have a basement or a storeroom, so we put the yard furniture and waste containers into the garage. And we bought lots and lots of food and water. We even filled the bath with water. We also checked the flashlights and the small radio in case they couldn’t work. The hurricane was terrible. The rain was so heavy that we couldn’t see out the windows. The wind was about 80 miles an hour and it reached 100 miles an hour at times. It knocked down the power lines and we didn’t have electricity for two days. We were lucky. Only one tree came down in the backyard. I was so scared! Most of the time, I stayed in the bathroom. But my husband was more relaxed. He lit candles and listened to the news on the radio.

根据第一段“Research evidence is mounting that identifying some of our most habitual beliefs and replacing them with more adaptive ones can revive our ability to keep ourselves healthy.”(越来越多的研究证据表明,识别出我们最习以为常的一些观点,并用更具适应性的观点取代它们,可以恢复我们保持健康的能力。)
根据第二段“They change what we pay attention to, what we’re motivated to do, how we feel emotionally about what we’re doing and what we decide to prioritize (优先处理).”
根据画线句上文“Though strict standards may help some people…”
根据第一段“If exercise seems like a great idea but you can never keep up a routine, it’s worth thinking about your exercise ‘mindset’—defined by psychologists as attitudes that shape our behaviour and reality. Research evidence is mounting that identifying some of our most habitual beliefs and replacing them with more adaptive ones can revive our ability to keep ourselves healthy.”
根据第四段“For both Slocumb and his character Ray, the violin was a means to get away from a difficult childhood and a ticket to college and a promising job.”

I experienced the exact same things Ray has gone through in the story, and no one would believe me. Now it’s out there in the world to see.’”
通读全文,尤其根据第三段“The stolen violin is one of many life experiences Slocumb drew upon to write his book, The Violin Conspiracy. It tells the story of Ray McMillian, a gifted violinist whose family violin is stolen just before one of the world-class music competitions.”及最后一段“After it came on the market in 2022, thanks poured in. Slocumb heard from many Black musicians who said ‘This is a story that I’ve been carrying along as well. I experienced the exact same things Ray has gone through in the story, and no one would believe me. Now it’s out there in the world to see.’”

根据第五段中“She is now researching methods to extract the oil from a used hair mat, meaning both can be reused.”
根据第一段中“With her San Francisco-based non-profit organization Matter of Trust, Gautier turns donated hair into mats(垫子) used to soak up oil spills (泄漏) on land, and booms(long tubes)used for spills at sea.”以及最后一段中“Gautier is pleased to see the movement growing. ‘Anyone can make a hair mat,’ she says. ‘It creates green jobs, it cleans water, it reduces waste in landfill, and it’s promoting renewable resources.’”可知,本文主要讲述了人的头发可以被用来清理石油泄漏,所以最好的标题是D项“Human hair is being used to clean up oil spills”。故选D项。

第一节
One possible version:
An obstacle I overcame
When I was young, I wanted to become a basketball player. However, when in high school, I faced an obstacle that almost broke my dream.
What always upset me was that I was not tall enough and I lacked the skills that many of my teammates had. However, I didn’t give up. I made up my mind to polish my skills. As the days passed, the coach started to notice my efforts, giving me more playing time.
By overcoming my obstacle, I realized that it was hard work and perseverance that are the keys to success.
One possible version:
Although I’m sure Maria didn’t understand my words, I could tell she understood my smile. It was a small but significant connection between us. We continued to play games and share laughter throughout the afternoon. I realized that even without words, we could communicate through gestures, expressions, and actions(宾语从句). It was a refreshing and eye-opening experience for me. In the following days, Maria and I spent more time together. We discovered that we had similar interests in music and art(宾语从句). We would listen to songs and try to sing along, even if we didn’t understand the lyrics(让步状语从句). We would draw pictures and show them to each other, appreciating each other’s creativity and imagination(现在分词作状语).
As we were both laughing, I realized that although we spoke different languages, I’d actually made a friend. Friendship goes beyond words and transcends cultural barriers. It is about understanding and a genuine connection with another person. Maria and I may come from different backgrounds, but our shared experiences and moments of laughter brought us closer together. Living in South America(动名词短语作主语) was no longer a lonely and frustrating experience for me. Thanks to(重要短语:多亏,由于) Maria, I had found a true friend and learned that friendship had no language boundaries(宾语从句). We may not have been able to have deep conversations, but our friendship was built on the foundation of joy, acceptance, and the celebration of our differences.

If exercise seems like a great idea but you can never keep up a routine, it’s worth thinking about your exercise “mindset”—defined by psychologists as attitudes that shape our behaviour and reality. Research evidence is mounting that identifying some of our most habitual beliefs and replacing them with more adaptive ones can revive our ability to keep ourselves healthy.
“Whether they’re true or not, mindsets have an effect,” says Dr Alia Crum. “They change what we pay attention to, what we’re motivated to do, how we feel emotionally about what we’re doing and what we decide to prioritize (优先处理).” For instance, maybe you’ve tried to shame or scare yourself into going to the gym by reconsidering the health risks of not moving. Or perhaps you’ve aimed to get active by thinking of the long-term positive aspects of exercise: exercising regularly is 1.5 times more effective than taking medicine in easing depression, stress and anxiety.
In contrast, thinking about exercise in all-or-nothing terms—“I need at least 30 minutes or there’s no point.”—is the enemy of consistency. You want to use the mindset that “any and all movement is worth it, and everything counts”, says Dr Michelle Segar, a researcher at the University of Michigan. Even a quick walk in the middle of a busy day is good for your well-being. If that doesn’t agree with your perfectionist tendencies (倾向), consider whether those tendencies have worked for you. Though strict standards may help some people, for many others they backfire, creating a cycle of failure.
Besides bringing flexibility (灵活性) to how you view your movement, changing your “why” for getting active can also help keep up motivation. Rather than seeing workouts as a way to lose weight, it can help to focus on more immediately pleasant reasons to do it, like clearing your mind or feeling less stressed.
Regarding the process of exercise as something that’s attractive makes a difference. The key is to focus on the pleasure that exercise can bring, and then pick an activity that is actually rewarding.
( )24.What’s the writing purpose of Paragraph 1
A.To give a general description of the mindset.
B.To explain people’s confusion over the mindset.
C.To investigate the reasons for habitual behaviours.
D.To stress the importance of adapting the exercise mindset.
( )25.What can be learned about Alia Crum’s point of view

Even though it’s been more than 30 years, Brendan Slocumb still feels the heartbreak of his stolen violin.
In his senior year of high school, Slocumb’s family found their home ransacked (洗劫) after a trip abroad. Slocumb, who had been playing the violin since he was nine, went immediately to the hiding spot under his bed. “I looked. My instrument was gone. I looked again. It was gone,” he said.
The stolen violin is one of many life experiences Slocumb drew upon to write his book, The Violin Conspiracy. It tells the story of Ray McMillian, a gifted violinist whose family violin is stolen just before one of the world-class music competitions.
Born in California, Slocumb was raised in Fayetteville, N.C., and began playing the violin through a public school music programme. For both Slocumb and his character Ray, the violin was a means to get away from a difficult childhood and a ticket to college and a promising job. After graduating from college with a degree in music education, Slocumb has taught music to students from primary through high school for more than 20 years.
Writing the book was a chance to celebrate Slocumb’s success and honour the people who helped him along the way. In the book, Ray’s grandma Nora—his first supporter—is named after Slocumb’s grandmother. And Ray’s mentor (导师) Janice is based on Dr Rachel Vetter Huang, Slocumb’s college teacher, whom he calls “a life-saving force”.
The Violin Conspiracy has been praised for its lively descriptions. After it came on the market in 2022, thanks poured in. Slocumb heard from many Black musicians who said “This is a story that I’ve been carrying along as well. I experienced the exact same things Ray has gone through in the story, and no one would believe me. Now it’s out there in the world to see.”

Lisa Gautier receives nearly a dozen parcels of human hair every day. With her San Francisco-based non-profit organization Matter of Trust, Gautier turns donated hair into mats (垫子)used to soak up oil spills (泄漏)on land, and booms(long tubes)used for spills at sea.
A standard way to clean up oil from land is to use mats made from polypropylene(聚丙烯). But polypropylene is non-biodegradable plastic, and producing it ultimately means more drilling for oil. Hair, by contrast, is an environmentally friendly resource that can soak up around five times its weight in oil, according to Matter of Trust, and it is abundant.
Oil spills can pollute drinking water, endanger public health, harm plants and wildlife, and damage the economy. According to Gautier, the spills that hit the headlines only make up 5% of global oil pollution.
Megan Murray, an environmental biologist at the University of Technology Sydney, develops sustainable technologies to tackle oil spills. Her research indicates that as well as being biodegradable, human hair is often just as effective as polypropylene, and in some circumstances even better. “The hair mats are very beneficial to land spills,” says Murray but adds that when raw oil is spilled on beach sand, it is very difficult to absorb it using any of the materials she has tested. Another advantage of hair is that it costs less than conventional materials and is “globally available as a recycled material”, she says.
However, Murray cautions that hair mats are not a perfect solution, because they are single-use items, and can only be dealt with by burning or by burying them into soil which then isn’t suitable for growing food. She is now researching methods to extract the oil from a used hair mat, meaning both can be reused.
As the hair mat designs aren’t under patent, other groups have begun producing their own mats and booms. Gautier is pleased to see the movement growing. “Anyone can make a hair mat,” she says. “It creates green jobs, it cleans water, it reduces waste in landfill, and it’s promoting renewable resources.”

“Why did dad’s job make us move to South America anyway ” I asked Mum. “The TV shows are in Spanish and I miss going to school. The worst part is that I don’t have any friends here. All of the kids speak Spanish.”
“I know it’s hard, sweetheart. I’m lonely here too,” Mum said. “It’s hard to make friends when I can’t talk to anybody.”
Mum hugged (拥抱) me. “We’ll only be living here for eight more months.”
At that moment, eight months sounded like forever. A few days later, Dad said that a man at his work had a daughter of my age. “Would you like to invite her over to play ”
“Does she speak English ”
“No,” Dad said, “but I can teach you a few Spanish words so the two of you can talk a little bit.” I shrugged (耸肩), “It’s hard to be friends with someone when you can’t really talk to them.” Dad nodded, “I understand, but you wished for a friend.”
“I mean a friend who speaks English.”
“I know, but this might be fun anyway. I’m going to ask her dad to bring her over to our house.”
The following afternoon, Maria and her dad came over. I felt funny because I didn’t know how we’d play together without being able to talk to one another.
“Hola,” I said quietly, which means “hi” in Spanish.
Maria smiled and said something I didn’t understand. I looked at Dad and whispered (低声说), “This isn’t going to work.”
“Give it a chance,” he said.
Then Maria showed me a cardboard box. She’d brought a game called Connect Four. Dad smiled, “You don’t need to speak the same language to play that game.”
Maria and I went to my bedroom and set up the game. We took turns in putting the coloured disks (圆片) into the board, trying to get four in a row. Suddenly Maria smiled and pointed at the four red pieces in a row.
I smiled and said, “You won. Good game.”
Paragraph 1:
Although I’m sure Maria didn’t understand my words, I could tell she understood my smile.

Paragraph 2:
As we were both laughing, I realized that although we spoke different languages, I’d actually made a friend.
