Text 1
M: Would you like a piece of cake or a coffee
W: No, I’m on a diet. I’m only supposed to eat vegetables. I can’t even have fruit because it has too much sugar.
Text 2
M: So what do you think of Gina
W: Well, she is a nurse, but she is a bit untidy. Before she moved in, she said she loved cleaning her old apartment.
Text 3
M: Hello, Sally. How about going for a meal this evening
W: Good idea! I finish work at five. Why don’t we meet at a quarter to six
M: OK, that sounds good. Let’s meet in front of the train station.
Text 4
M: I hope you can understand my reasons for deciding to leave, Mrs Harrison.
W: Do I have to remind you that we have put a lot of time and money in your career here
Text 5
W: What are you going to do at the weekend
M: I’m going to have music lessons, and I’m also going to see a film with my friends.
W: Sounds good.
Text 6
M: Hello, Sarah. Good to see you again. Welcome to the company.
W: Thank you. I know you asked me to come in a little later on my first day, but what time do I normally start work
M: Well, the office opens at 8:30 and the team starts work at a 9 o’clock meeting.
W: What happens after the meeting
M: We take a break at 10:30. My assistant Mia makes coffee for us all. Then it’s time to call customers and make sales.
W: That sounds good.
Text 7
M: It’s about a three-minute ride up to the top of the Mount Rock.
W: This thing is safe, right
M: Yes, you don’t have anything to worry about. We do about 100 trips a day up the mountain, and these tours have been going on for over ten years without any accidents.
W: That’s a relief. What’s that lake down there
M: That’s John Lake. It’s actually a man-made pond. During the 70’s there was a lot of clear cutting of forests in the area, and much of the wildlife was lost. Since John Lake was built, ducks, swans, and geese have returned to the area.
Text 8
W: So Mr Smith, why would you like to leave your current job
M: Well, the sales position that you are offering would give me opportunities to work internationally. At the moment, I’m just based in Seattle.
W: I see. But what makes you suitable for this job
M: I’ve been very successful so far in sales and I think I can offer a good service to your customers.
W: Interesting point. What is good customer service in your view
M: The most important skill is the ability to listen to what customers have to say.
W: Very true. But of course learning is a never-ending process for anybody in business. Now, what are your weaknesses, would you say
M: I suppose I’m not very good at making sure all the paperwork in sales is completed quickly. You know, I prefer to be out there, going on to the next customer. But of course, I know it has to be done. I’m trying to improve.
W: OK. Now, what are your salary requirements For this sales position, I mean.
Text 9
M: This is a long flight. Marina, are you OK
W: Gee, I’m sleepy. What time is it now
M: According to my watch it’s 3:30 am. We’ve been flying for eight hours. I set it at the airport. Do we have to set our watches back when we cross the International Date Line or do we move them up I can never remember which way it is.
W: I have no idea, too. I think I’ll take a nap.
M: Go ahead. Here is your blanket and your pillow.
W: My ears feel funny. I can’t hear properly.
M: Don’t worry. It’s because of the change in air pressure.
W: Do you feel all right
M: I’m OK. If you open and shut your mouth repeatedly, it will help.
W: I will try chewing some gum.
M: Listen to the announcement. The plane is taxiing on the runway and making a perfect landing.
Text 10
M: I’ll talk about the marathons I ran these years. My first marathon was in Okinawa, Japan. On the morning of the race, I was pretty nervous. But the weather was beautiful, the atmosphere was fantastic, and my training beforehand was just enough—I finished the race! It was an amazing feeling! My favourite marathon was the one in Reykjavik, Iceland. Iceland is a beautiful country and the scenery along the course was breathtaking. The most difficult race was in Kuala Lumpur. First of all, it was really hot. But, my biggest mistake was that I forgot to pack my running shoes! Can you believe it So, the day before the race, I had to buy new shoes and during the race, my feet were pretty painful! In St. Petersburg, which is in Russia, I managed to finish in third place! This was a real shock. After my last race in Bangkok, Thailand, I had completed my challenge. I still enjoy running. I’m currently preparing for a full marathon in Stockholm. And maybe I’ll try running 20 marathons in the new year!

根据第二段“…as I test my mother tongue, speaking Mandarin(普通话) and putting it into English for visitors.”
根据第四段“One woman taps me on the shoulder, saying, ‘Please, tell her that her work is surreal…a gift from another world.’”
根据最后一段“It is in the life that I once thought backward and dull—the Chinese way of life that is a part of me.”
根据第二段中“Jesse Dodge, a scientist at the Allen Institute, says, ‘The influence of AI systems is going to be from their applications, not the cost of training them.’”
根据第四段“But on the other side of the coin, there are AI applications that can help deal with environmental problems, such as the destruction caused by hurricanes. One such application is xView2, a program started by a US organization. It can recognize buildings damaged and people trapped in natural disasters, reducing danger and saving time for rescuers.”
根据最后一段“AI could be a valuable tool in the fight against climate change—if the AI industry can reduce its harmful climate effects. ‘Both AI and climate rules have roles to play,’ Rolnick says. When creating AI rules, he suggests considering its applications, emissions, and other production costs. Further, Dodge adds that those AI professionals should help set up some value systems to limit the technology’s use.” 故选A。
根据文章大意以及第一段“But its environmental effect is more than its carbon(碳) footprint.”
根据第一段“Popular belief has it that interruption breaks the flow of your thinking and affects productivity negatively, and so it is advisable that you have an uninterrupted session of intensive work before your next break.”(人们普遍认为,中断会打断你的思维,对工作效率产生负面影响,所以建议你在下次休息前进行一段不受打扰的高强度工作。) 故选A。
根据第三段“It turns out that adults remembered the interrupted tasks 90% better than the completed tasks, and that children were even more likely to recall the uncompleted tasks. To put it another way, uncompleted tasks will stay on your mind until you finish them!”(结果表明,成年人对被打断的任务的记忆比对完成的任务的记忆高出90%,而孩子们甚至更有可能回忆起未完成的任务。
根据倒数第二段“One possible explanation is that with interrupted tasks, we are longing for them to be completed, in order to regain a sense of balance. Finishing them also means that we can finally clear up the mental backlog and give the space to more upcoming tasks.”(一种可能的解释是,对于被打断的任务,我们渴望完成它们,以重新获得平衡感。
根据倒数第二段“In comparison to tasks that were already finished and ones that we haven’t even started, half-done projects are highlighted in the mental to-do list our brains draw up for us.”(与已经完成的任务和我们甚至还没有开始的任务相比,完成了一半的项目会在我们大脑为我们制订的待办事项清单中突出显示。)及最后一段“Have you ever wondered…or why you just can’t get yourself to stop watching that series on Netflis ”可推知,电视连续剧是应用蔡格尼克记忆效应的一个例子,因为电视连续剧的剧集之间有时间间隔,导致人们被“中断”,以至于时刻想着看剧这件事。故选D。
第二节

You can earn a reputation for being untrustworthy.”

One possible version:
A pleasant outing
Last weekend, our class organized an outing in the People’s Park in order to help us get relaxed after the mid-term examination.
Everyone spent a wonderful time together. On the way to the destination, we were so excited that we sang in a loud voice. Upon the arrival of the park, we enjoyed a delicious picnic first and then played interesting games. Later, some girls danced under the trees and some boys even played the guitar, which drew thunderous applause.
The outing not only brought us great pleasure but also relieved us of the pressure caused by the study. Most importantly, it helped to strengthen the relationship among us.
One possible version:
Curious, Maria opened the note and started reading it. The note, which was actually written by her neighbour Angelia in Corote’s voice(非限制性定语从句), said she had noticed Chips crying a lot(宾语从句). She wanted to give Chips some toys to play with so that he wouldn’t feel alone when Maria was away(so that引导的目的状语从句;when引导的时间状语从句). Besides, Chips was invited to play with Corote. Maria was deeply moved and felt relieved after reading the note. Instead of expressing discontent, her kind neighbour was really understanding and tried to offer support. Maria felt she needed to meet Angelia and her dog(宾语从句).
With Chips following her, Maria knocked at Angelia’s door. The door opened and Maria saw Angelia, smiling at her(现在分词作状语). Corote, Angelia’s dog, followed her and stared at Chips happily. The two dogs immediately hit it off. A pleasant atmosphere was created when Maria and Angelia were chatting(时间状语从句). After that, the two pairs regularly played together. In the process, Maria also got valuable advice from Angelia. Through their shared experiences and the joy their pets brought them, Maria and her neighbour formed a deep connection and their lives became very colourful and meaningful.

B
At the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, among mountain songs and ethnic costumes and special ceremonies, I am noticeable despite my modern dress, as my green “VOLUNTEER” name tag brands me as a perfect target for curious tourists. I have volunteered to learn about global customs; my knowledge of my native culture is limited. I had boxed up my past before moving to America eight years ago, when a new continent considered my old self foreign.
Here on the National Mall, I am the only means of communication between the Americans and the artisans (工匠), who were invited from China to display their talents. They see my awkward hand gestures as I test my mother tongue, speaking Mandarin (普通话) and putting it into English for visitors.
The artisans possess exceptional skills. He Guoyao can read thousands of pictographic characters (象形文字) and bears the duty of passing on Dongba culture. Cheng Zhirong creates fantastic animal figures with a spoon and melted sugar in minutes. Standing among them, I wonder about the contributions a 16-year-old girl can make.
“Ooh, it’s so pretty! ” A young girl sticks her nose close to a sugar dragon. Zhirong, the candy maker, signals to me, and I explain to the girl that the dragon is pure sugar. “Mummy, it’s candy! ” she excitedly says. “Beautiful…” The crowd breathes in awe. One woman taps me on the shoulder, saying, “Please, tell her that her work is surreal…a gift from another world.”
As Zhirong takes my hand and calls me “little sister”, I find my place in this group of extraordinary people who crossed oceans to build a bridge between different ethnicities and nationalities through sugar sculptures and painted words. I, too, am a bearer of traditions.
I smile at Guoyao, as he paints (the English words I have taught him) in pictographic characters, “You’re welcome.” I come to know that culture is not shelved behind glass cases in museums. It is in the life that I once thought backward and dull—the Chinese way of life that is a part of me.

As AI becomes popular, researchers have noticed its influence on the environment. Training an AI system requires huge computing power and electricity, and the resulting CO2 emissions (排放物) are one way AI affects the environment. But its environmental effect is more than its carbon(碳) footprint.
Jesse Dodge, a scientist at the Allen Institute, says, “The influence of AI systems is going to be from their applications, not the cost of training them.” David Rolnick, a computer scientist at McGill University, compares AI to a hammer (锤子). “The main effect of a hammer is what is being hammered,” he says, “not what is in the hammer.” Just like a hammer which can either destroy things or build a house, AI can hurt or help the environment.
In 2019, ExxonMobil, an oil company, said it would use Microsoft Azure. With the AI technology, it would increase its production and create billions of dollars. This means Microsoft’s AI is directly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. This is not the only AI application that could be environmentally harmful. AI behind the ads that jump out on Instagram or Facebook pages pushes customers to spend more on products like clothes. This in turn causes more emissions through more production and delivery.
But on the other side of the coin, there are AI applications that can help deal with environmental problems, such as the destruction caused by hurricanes. One such application is xView2, a program started by a US organization. It can recognize buildings damaged and people trapped in natural disasters, reducing danger and saving time for rescuers.
AI could be a valuable tool in the fight against climate change—if the AI industry can reduce its harmful climate effects. “Both AI and climate rules have roles to play,” Rolnick says. When creating AI rules, he suggests considering its applications, emissions, and other production costs. Further, Dodge adds that those AI professionals should help set up some value systems to limit the technology’s use.

No one likes interruption. We are born to seek balance and order. No matter what it is that you are doing, being interrupted involves a forceful stop midway and then having to re-enter your former state, sometimes with great difficulty. Popular belief has it that interruption breaks the flow of your thinking and affects productivity negatively, and so it is advisable that you have an uninterrupted session of intensive work before your next break.
However, a Russian psychologist, Bluma Zeigarnik, might tell you otherwise. The connection between interruption and memory drew her attention when she was dining in a restaurant. She noticed how the waitresses had an amazing memory of the detailed orders yet to be paid for, but little memory of the orders that were already completed.
Back in her laboratory, she conducted studies in which subjects were required to complete various puzzles. Some of the subjects were interrupted during the tasks. All the subjects were then asked to describe what tasks they had done. It turns out that adults remembered the interrupted tasks 90% better than the completed tasks, and that children were even more likely to recall the uncompleted tasks. To put it another way, uncompleted tasks will stay on your mind until you finish them!
In comparison to tasks that were already finished and ones that we haven’t even started, half-done projects are highlighted in the mental to-do list our brains draw up for us. Zeigarnik described this finding in the late 1920s, which was later called Zeigarnik effect. One possible explanation is that with interrupted tasks, we are longing for them to be completed, in order to regain a sense of balance. Finishing them also means that we can finally clear up the mental backlog and give the space to more upcoming tasks.
Zeigarnik effect can be found everywhere, especially used in media and advertising. Have you ever wondered why cliffhangers work so well or why you just can’t get yourself to stop watching that series on Netflix Ernest Hemingway once said about writing a novel, “It is the wait until the next day that is hard to get through.” So next time, when you are interrupted, appreciate it and take advantage of it to promote your productivity.

For most people, adopting (收养) a pet is one of the best decisions that they can ever make in their lives. In addition to giving an animal a home and a loving family, the owner will find the company of a pet brings more happiness than expected.
For someone like Maria, having a pet was very suitable. She was all alone after moving to a new apartment in Brazil, which made her feel lonely.
So when she found a cute black puppy named Chips, she knew she had to take him home. Maria thought that Chips would be able to fill the emptiness that she had been experiencing from living all alone.
Maria was right. Once she took the puppy home, they immediately bonded. However, as Maria had to work during the day, she was worried about leaving Chips home alone in her apartment. She was also worried that his crying would upset her neighbours.
One night, when she returned home, outside her door was a package with a folded note attached to it. Maria knew that she was in trouble. She hoped that she would not be evicted (驱逐) from her new apartment because of Chips. She loved Chips so much, and she was afraid that she might have to get rid of him because he made too much noise whenever she was away. Maria was frightened and wondered who could have left it at the door because she had little contact with the people in the building except her neighbour, Angelia. In fact, they only said hello few times.
However, when she noticed the names on the folded note, she found that it wasn’t addressed to her but to her dog, Chips, and that it was “written” by another dog named Corote. Maria opened the package first and found a few toys for pets.
Paragraph 1:
Curious, Maria opened the note and started reading it.

Paragraph 2:
With Chips following her, Maria knocked at Angelia’s door.
