Text 1
M: What do you usually do in your spare time
W: I spend most of my spare time listening to rock music. And you
M: I love to collect stamps and take photos. I have put up many pictures on my bedroom wall.
Text 2
M: I love our apple tree. It’s been there for years. I wonder how old it is.
W: Well, grandad told me that his father planted it when he was a kid. So, pretty old!
M: I wonder if our dad used to play in it when he was small!
Text 3
M: Sit down, please, Kate. You’ve won the school poetry competition. There’s a prize for you. Congratulations! I will give you the prize in front of your class.
W: Thank you, Mr Smith.
Text 4
W: National Bank, can I help you
M: Yes, please. What are your business hours
W: We open at 9 and close at 4 during the week. On Saturday we close one hour earlier at 3 and we’re closed on Sunday.
Text 5
W: Make sure to feed Charlie. Don’t worry about taking him out again. He does not like to go out in the rain, because he pulled the whole time and then rolled around everywhere when we got back.
M: Exactly, he hates rain.
Text 6
M: We’re going away for the weekend. We’re renting a nice little house in the forest.
W: That sounds very relaxing. I’d love to get out of the city for a few days.
M: You should just go on a holiday somewhere.
W: I would, but I’ve got no one to go with, and I’m too scared to travel on my own.
M: I used to travel alone a lot before I met Jennifer. It’s not as scary as you think.
W: I’ll think about it. I just want to lie on a beach and read a good book.
Text 7
M: Anna, what’s up
W: Nothing special. It is reported that the rain won’t stop until noon, and it will be sunny then. But there will be strong wind late in the afternoon.
M: That’s terrible. We can’t go bike riding or see a film.
W: Right. I think we’d better watch TV this afternoon.
M: Sounds like a good idea. But I’m going to clean up my room. Mum will be pleased about it.
W: You just gave me an idea. I think I’ll do the same.
M: OK. Oh, when will she be back
W: I have no idea. She took a taxi to the company this morning and she will get her car in the garage after work.
M: I see.
Text 8
M: Let’s divide up the tasks.
W: OK. John, you’re good at socializing so maybe you can make the guest list.
M: No problem. I also enjoy online marketing tasks, so leave it to me. And Edward knows some really good musicians that do events like this one. He can be on organizing the musicians.
W: Nice. I’ve got experience in graphic design so I’m happy to design the invitations.
M: Great. Do you mind designing the posters too I don’t think any other of us is good at designing.
W: Sure, it’ll be fun. The invitations are more important so I guess I’ll design them first. But who will be in charge of sending them out
M: Since I’m making the guest list, I should send out the invitations, too.
W: Great. Nancy’s brother Tim works in the Paramount Hotel, so I think she is the best person to do the room reservations.
M: Isn’t she taking care of her mother at the hospital these days
W: Oh, her mother is recovered now. Nancy just called and said she was on the train back.
Text 9
M: So here we go, I’ll tell you all the things you need to know. My son Rick is usually pretty quiet. He loves playing computer games, but my wife and I don’t allow him to play for too long. When he finishes his homework, please give him a glass of milk and some cookies. The cookies are on the top shelf of the cupboard.
W: Okay. What about little Daisy
M: She is younger and more active. She’s crazy about dolls and can play with them for hours. She loves singing, so don’t be surprised if she asks you to watch her performance.
W: Ha-ha, lovely. What about dinner
M: It’s in the refrigerator. You should heat it up and give it to them around 7:00 pm. Put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher when they’re done. Don’t be shy, Linette. If you’re hungry, just help yourself.
W: Thanks. I already had my dinner. What about their bedtime
M: As for Daisy, she must go to bed before 9:00 pm. Rick can stay up for another half an hour. Oh, one more thing, please don’t leave the house until I return.
W: Got it. Have a nice evening, Mr Cells.
M: Thank you. I should be back from work by midnight.
Text 10
M: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the South Coast Gardens, founded in 1932 by the Johnson family. I’m Handerson. Very pleased to have this chance to keep you company. As is known across the world, the Gardens covers eight acres and has more than 8,000 varieties of plants. The old family house holds one of the world’s largest collections of rare books. Besides, it also holds a collection of the 19th century British, European, and American paintings, rare coins, furniture, and so on. You’ll have time to visit the collections after lunch, following our walk through the gardens. It’s certain that you’ll enjoy the Gardens, which is divided into an Eastern tea garden, a tropical rose rainforest, the southwestern desert, and an English rose garden, considered to be one of the most beautiful rose gardens in the country. It’s a great place where you can appreciate a variety of roses with distinct features and enjoy English rose tea if you’re willing to. If you have any questions during today’s tour, please don’t hesitate to ask me. Now if you follow me along the stone path to your right, we’ll begin our tour.

第一节
A
根据第二段“Although courses are non-credit and do not have letter grades, you need to attend the class in its entirety.”
根据How to apply部分中“Transcripts from 9th grade to fall of 2021: this can include progress reports, report cards and educational summaries from your high school.”
根据Cost & Aid部分中“The total fee for a Harvard Pre-College Programme 2022 session is $4,950. The programme fee includes tuition, room and board, and activity costs for the full two weeks. There is also a non-refundable $75 application fee and $100 health insurance.”
根据第一段中“The removal of the neuroma caused my temporary balance issues and permanent hearing loss in one ear.”和第二段中“Unexpectedly, the neuroma came back years later.”
根据第三段“Overnight my whole identity had changed. I used to effortlessly leap up the stairs two at a time, but now it takes fifteen minutes to struggle. Attempts at the recovery of the old me proved to be fruitless. My family role also shifted from a father to a dependent child, and coupled with my communication problems, this led to increased frustration (沮丧) and anger.”
根据倒数第二段中“For the first time a stranger was speaking to me as an equal like before. Though insignificant then, it opened doors to a whole new way of being seen, and seeing myself.”
根据最后一段中“For me, life after the brain injury is like Waits’ odd works. Out of failure, ugliness and horror—the most unpromising raw material—a beautiful diamond can be created that shines out even more brightly because of its dark surroundings.”
根据第一段中的“Between 1945 and 2000, educators employed a fairly uniform approach. The teacher was the sun in the classroom, and all lessons and activities centred around him or her.”
根据第二段中的“Instead of needing to focus on the teachers for the vast majority of the day, students could use computers, websites and even games to learn new materials and improve their skills and knowledge.” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“Tech advocates stress that computers and Internet technology allow students to learn at their own pace in an environment that makes them feel comfortable, while the traditional classroom sets a pace that many learners can’t keep up with and often makes students feel uncomfortable. Traditionalists, on the other hand, believe that over-reliance on tech limits students’ ability to develop their own knowledge and skills and does little to prepare them for the realities of being adults in the real world.” Two of a trade never agree. Everyone thinks in his way.
根据最后一段中的“We must learn from what worked in the past while adopting the best of our new technologies to create an education system that reflects our modern world.”
根据第三段的“If sent on a search-and-rescue task into a fallen building, for instance, a robot that finds survivors could use lights to signal others and call for help.”
根据第四段的“These robots are so lightweight that they can’t carry sensors, so researchers must track them using big infrared (红外线的) cameras that don’t work well outdoors. Now, they’ve shown that they can track the robots exactly using the light they send out and just three smartphone cameras.”
根据倒数第二段的“If you think of large-size robots, they can communicate using a lot of different tools. But for a tiny robot, we are forced to think about new modes of communication.”
通读全文,并根据第二段“These shiny fireflies also inspired scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They built electroluminescent soft artificial muscles for flying insect-size robots. The tiny artificial muscles that control the robots’ wings send out coloured light during flight.” 故选A。
第二节

39. F 根据上文“At the end of the day, you need to carve out a path for yourself that will lead to the most satisfaction. If you allow your fear to get the best of you, you’re never going to forgive yourself.”
40. E 根据上文“Sometimes, following your passion means spending a lot of your time each day. It may require making slight adjustments to your schedule, but you don’t have to sacrifice everything to follow your hearts. Try to strike a balance between your current life and your dreams.”

One possible version:
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room. She was not rejected this time. Her name was posted at the top of the list. She, Emily White, was chosen to be the leading singer! She would sing alone in the performance. Emily couldn’t believe her eyes. There must be some mistake. But Mr Buttler said to her with determined eyes, “Emily, I choose you because you should perform the part—your voice is unusual. Believe in yourself.” Greatly encouraged, Emily practised really hard.
Finally, the day of performance came. Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily. “Emily White!” someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out. Her voice was like a nightingale ringing in the auditorium. Applause! Emily felt so happy and comfortable. She was shining on the stage. Emily White, with so many birth problems in her body, was an angel!

About 30 years ago, an acoustic neuroma (听神经瘤) was found inside my body. The removal of the neuroma caused my temporary balance issues and permanent hearing loss in one ear. Apart from this, I was fine.
Unexpectedly, the neuroma came back years later. It had to be removed again. Otherwise it would threaten the rest of my brain. When I awoke from the second operation, I had stroke-like symptoms. The whole right side of my body almost stopped functioning, and still does.
Overnight my whole identity had changed. I used to effortlessly leap up the stairs two at a time, but now it takes fifteen minutes to struggle. Attempts at the recovery of the old me proved to be fruitless. My family role also shifted from a father to a dependent child, and coupled with my communication problems, this led to increased frustration (沮丧) and anger.
There were concerns about whether I would ever be accepted again in the wider world. Soon after this I just managed to swim in a pool. A ten-year-old boy I didn’t know came up and asked me if I had been on the water slide yet. As politely as possible, I said no, and we struck up a conversation about it. For the first time a stranger was speaking to me as an equal like before. Though insignificant then, it opened doors to a whole new way of being seen, and seeing myself.
To make sure the neuroma did not reappear, I received radiation treatment for two hours regularly, during which I loved listening to music by Tom Waits, an eccentric (古怪的) singer most people dislike, but I don’t care. For me, life after the brain injury is like Waits’ odd works. Out of failure, ugliness and horror—the most unpromising raw material—a beautiful diamond can be created that shines out even more brightly because of its dark surroundings.

Between 1945 and 2000, educators employed a fairly uniform approach. The teacher was the sun in the classroom, and all lessons and activities centred around him or her. Educators stressed the importance of discipline and obedience (服从) within the classroom, and students were expected to follow very rigid standards for behaviour and academic performance. The stated goal of this model was to ensure fairness by applying the same expectations. However, the result was that only a few students succeeded while many others were left behind.
When computers and Internet technology entered the classroom a few decades ago, another pattern appeared and progressive educators immediately saw the opportunity to change the way schools worked. Instead of needing to focus on the teachers for the vast majority of the day, students could use computers, websites and even games to learn new materials and improve their skills and knowledge. Not all educators welcomed this shift, however, as some believed it took power and responsibility away from the teachers and cheapened the educational experience for learners.
Over the last decade, two distinct camps of educators have emerged. Tech advocates stress that computers and Internet technology allow students to learn at their own pace in an environment that makes them feel comfortable, while the traditional classroom sets a pace that many learners can’t keep up with and often makes students feel uncomfortable. Traditionalists, on the other hand, believe that over-reliance on tech limits students’ ability to develop their own knowledge and skills and does little to prepare them for the realities of being adults in the real world.
Regrettably, the inability of these two parties to find an agreement has prevented the growth of our education system. We must learn from what worked in the past while adopting the best of our new technologies to create an education system that reflects our modern world. If we can’t get all our teachers on the same page, then we will be at risk of failing future generations.

Fireflies that light up dark backyards on warm summer evenings use their luminescence (光辉) for communication—to attract a mate or scare away enemies.
These shiny fireflies also inspired scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They built electroluminescent soft artificial muscles for flying insect-size robots. The tiny artificial muscles that control the robots’ wings send out coloured light during flight.
This electroluminescence could enable the robots to communicate with each other. If sent on a search-and-rescue task into a fallen building, for instance, a robot that finds survivors could use lights to signal others and call for help.
The ability to send out light also brings these tiny robots one step closer to flying on their own outside the lab. These robots are so lightweight that they can’t carry sensors, so researchers must track them using big infrared (红外线的) cameras that don’t work well outdoors. Now, they’ve shown that they can track the robots exactly using the light they send out and just three smartphone cameras.
“If you think of large-size robots, they can communicate using a lot of different tools. But for a tiny robot, we are forced to think about new modes of communication. This is a major step towards flying these robots in outdoor environments where we don’t have a state-of-the-art tracking system,” says Kevin Chen, who is the senior author of the paper. He and his team members did this by putting tiny electroluminescent particles into the artificial muscles. The process adds just 2.5 percent more weight without impacting the flight performance of the robot.
Joining Chen on the paper are Electrical Engineering and Computer Science graduate students Suhan Kim, the lead author, Yi-Hsuan Hsiao, and Jie Mao, an associate professor at Ningxia University. The research was published in IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium (礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to see Mrs Owens—her music teacher, to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs Owens took a look at Emily’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr Buttler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr Buttler told her to do. Mr Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.
Paragraph 1:
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room.

Paragraph 2:
Finally, the day of performance came.
