Text 1
M: Before feeding the dog, I’m going to clear up its house.
W: It’s about time. Look at the mess! It smells terrible.
Text 2
W: How do you stay fit, David
M: Well, I used to enjoy running, but after hurting my knee, my doctor suggested not running that often. So nowadays I mainly swim. And I do quite like going cycling sometimes, though.
Text 3
M: When will the meeting begin
W: According to the schedule, it should start at 9:30, and it will last for an hour and a half.
Text 4
M: Are you all right, Maria What’s wrong with your neck
W: Ah, I’ve just fallen over in the snow and I’ve got a terrible pain in my arm, not my neck.
M: Give me your hand and I’ll help you up.
W: OK, thanks.
Text 5
W: This forest picture would go really well with the colours in our bedroom, and the sunflower one matches our kitchen.
M: I agree. And we can hang the beach picture over our sofa.
Text 6
M: Look at those boats! I’m thinking of buying one.
W: What You don’t need a boat. It’s a waste of money!
M: No, it isn’t. Think of all the summers we can spend on it!
W: But look at the price!
M: I was getting to that. With a little help from a friend, I could buy it. I just need to borrow $1,000.
W: You’re kidding, right
M: No, and I promise to pay you back very soon. Please!
W: Sorry, Billy. I’m broke. Anyway, I wouldn’t lend you money for a boat!
Text 7
W: Joseph, do you have any plans for the holidays
M: Yes, I’m going to Canada.
W: Wonderful! How are you going to travel there
M: I’ll fly to Winnipeg, and then I’ll have a 500-mile drive across Banff in the Rockies.
W: How long are you going to stay in Canada
M: From the 15th of December to the 11th of January.
W: That’s a long holiday! What are you going to do there
M: Well, I’ll stay in Winnipeg for one week to visit my relatives. Then, for the next three weeks, I’ll be skiing in Banff. There are also hot springs. I’ll go swimming.
W: Where are you going to stay in Banff
M: I’ll be staying with a friend and his family.
W: Sounds like a lot of fun!
Text 8
W: Adam, here is an interesting question from one of our listeners: What is something that you wish you could have done over For example, maybe something in your university life.
M: Well, there are a few things. I might change my major. I studied education, and I enjoy what I’m doing right now. But if I could go back to school and start over, I’d probably study chemistry or physics.
W: Interesting. Anything else you wish you would have done
M: I might have been more active in doing sports. I played football in high school, but in college, it seemed that there was nothing that could push me to actually go out and put my heart into it. I went to one training day and I felt kind of tired. I wish I hadn’t given up football so easily.
W: How about something that you did do but maybe now you wish you hadn’t
M: I played video games a lot in high school because that was the cool thing to do, but I don’t play them now. And looking back on it, I think it’s just a waste of time to follow the trend.
Text 9
W: What are you waiting for
M: Whatever you are cooking. It smells wonderful. Biscuits Bread
W: It’s a disaster—that’s what it is.
M: Why It smells great.
W: Look at this bag. What does it say
M: Salt.
W: Exactly. I think I might have used that instead of sugar by accident. If I have, the cake will be a failure. I will have wasted four eggs, butter and lots of other materials.
M: Oh, I hope not.
W: Well, we’ll know for sure in 10 minutes, when it comes out of the cooker.
M: I can’t wait to try it.
W: It has to be left to cool for another 20 minutes—that’s if I’ve made it correctly, which I doubt.
M: Don’t be so negative. You’re usually so careful.
W: I have a lot on my mind at the moment and I’ve been doing a lot of silly things. Maybe I picked the wrong day for cooking, but I thought it would be something fun to do.
M: If nothing else, you’ve filled the house with the wonderful smell of the cake.
Text 10
M: Good afternoon, this is lunch time news.
A series of powerful tornadoes struck six American states over the weekend, killing at least 90 people, including workers in a candle factory in Mayfield, a Kentucky town, lakeside vacationers in Tennessee and residents in a nursing home in Arkansas.
Dozens of night-shift employees began to work in the candle factory in Mayfield when the terrible disaster happened. The workers sheltered in the bathroom area supposed to be the safest part of the building. But it may not have been of any use because the tornado was so big. Ten more people remain missing.
Judy Burton is a Mayfield local who spoke to the reporter about the storm this morning. She said that she was able to take shelter in the basement of her apartment building before the tornado hit. Local officials said the fire station was seriously damaged and most of the town’s police cars were destroyed. Many buildings were reduced to nothing. Burton was so worried about her old neighbour, Steve, as he was unable to escape with ruins around him.

Sorry to know that you feel weak and often fall ill. I am writing to give you some advice.
You don’t go outside to do any exercise, which is harmful to your physical and mental health. It would be of great benefit to your health if you could take more exercise. Time spent on exercise is not wasted. Actually, exercise can improve your physical health and ease your mind. Only when you are in good health can you be strong enough to better fight against diseases. Therefore, I suggest that you take at least one hour’s exercise every day.
I sincerely hope you can build up your strength by taking exercise.
Yours,

Under Shanshan’s guidance, Emily decided to start by making a list of key points about her hometown, such as its location, population and famous landmarks. She also included interesting facts and traditions that she thought would attract the audience’s attention. They practised together, and Shanshan even taught her some key phrases in Chinese to make her presentation more appealing. As the days passed, Emily’s confidence grew, and she became more comfortable speaking in front of an audience.
The day finally came and it was Emily’s turn to make the presentation. She was feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness as she walked to the front of the classroom. She took a deep breath, looked at her classmates and began her presentation. She spoke passionately about the beautiful landscapes, the friendly people and the unique cultural events. The students listened attentively and asked questions, showing their interest in her culture. Not only were they impressed by her presentation but also they were touched by the strong bond of friendship she had formed with Shanshan. Tom Sawyer play is an adventure
A 35-minute hand-clapping, foot-stomping musical version of a Mark Twain favourite returns with this Tall Stacks Festival.
Tom Sawyer: a river adventure has all the good stuff, including the fence painting, the graveyard, the island and the cave. It is adapted by Joe McDonough, with music by David Kisor. That’s the local stage writing team that creates many of the Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s original musicals, along with the holiday family musicals at Ensemble Theatre.

McMath is a junior at Beechwood High School. He was in the cast of Tom Sawyer when it was first performed and is a regular of Children’s Theatre, with five shows to his credit. This summer he attended Kentucky’s Governor’s School for the Arts in Musical Theatre.

A man rides at full speed on a single-wheeled bike, leaning back on a seat fixed above a recycled tyre as he performs wheelie (特技). This machine is just one of many crazy inventions from Make It Extreme, a YouTube channel run by Michael Mavros and George Shiailis, two best friends who use old materials to create unique and innovative mechanical projects.
The partners of this DIY design make the inventions to promote the joys of mechanical engineering and inspire creativity in others.
In Make It Extreme, they transform everyday objects and vehicles into extreme versions of themselves, pushing creative boundaries in the process. They build and design their projects, film and edit the entire process, then finally showcase the results.
“By passionately crafting furniture, engines, tools, toys and vehicles while using our imagination, we try to offer innovative solutions to various mechanical challenges,” explains Mavros. “We’ve shared this passion since our early years, and now, through our channel, we share it with millions of other people in an easily understandable way.”
For its 100th video, Make It Extreme introduced the Monotrack bike, which was constructed entirely from recycled and old materials. They utilized a 100cc two-stroke engine from an old scooter (小型摩托车), cutting the sidewalls of a used car tyre and fitting it around a recycled motor. The bike reflects their commitment to sustainability and creativity, purely for the joy and curiosity it brings.
“The idea for the Monotrack bike came from an old wartime photo where we saw a similar vehicle,” says Mavros. “Our creations are often inspired by things we’ve encountered before. For example, the Monowheel, where a person sits inside a huge wheel, was inspired by similar vehicles from decades ago, and our tank chair stemmed from the idea of creating an accessible adventure vehicle for people with limited mobility.”

One of the world’s oldest preserved human settlements has been significantly damaged by pouring rain in Pakistan as the country battles the worst floods in its history.
Moenjodaro, a World Heritage Site in the Indus River Valley 508 kilometres (316 miles) from Karachi, was built in the Bronze Age, some 5,000 years ago. “Unfortunately we witnessed the mass destruction at the site,” reads a letter from the Cultural, Tourism & Antiquities Department of Singh State sent to UNESCO and signed by Director Ihsan Ali Abbasi and architect Naveed Ahmed Sangah. The letter adds the site was being used as temporary accommodation for surrounding residents whose own homes had flooded.
Moenjodaro’s significance can’t be underestimated. When it was added to the UNESCO’s register in 1980, the organization wrote that Moenjodaro “bears exceptional proof of the Indus civilization”, comprising “the most ancient planned city on the Indian subcontinent”.
The letter explains some of the immediate actions the site team has taken to mitigate the floods damage, like bringing in water pumps and repairing brickwork. But it’s clear that these measures will not be enough.
Abbasi and Sangah ended their letter by asking for 100 million Pakistani rupees ($45 million) to cover the costs of full repairs. UNESCO has responded to the request for help, allocating $350,000 from its emergency funds for damaged historic sites in Pakistan during UN Secretary General António Guterres’ visit to the flood-stricken country this week.
The funds will go to Moenjodaro and other sites including the Amri Museum. While the sum is far less than needed to fully repair the sites, it will pay for urgent work while UNESCO and local organization consider the best way forward. Sadly, the conservators of Moenjodaro have known for some time that flooding could bring a serious risk to the site.
In their letter, Abbasi and Sangah express concern that Moenjodaro could be added to the list of UNESCO sites in danger, which the preservation body updates periodically to highlight historic places that are at severe risk of ruin.

Some are concerned that AI tools are turning language learning into a weakening pursuit. More and more people are using simple, free tools, not only to decode text but also to speak. With these apps’ conversation mode, you talk into a phone and a spoken translation is heard moments later. The app can also listen for another language and produce a translation in yours.
Others are less worried. Most people do not move abroad or have the kind of ongoing contact with a foreign culture that requires them to put in the work to become fluent. Nor do most people learn languages for the purpose of humanising themselves or training their brains. On their holiday, they just want a beer and the spaghetti without incident.
Douglas Hofstadter, an expert in many languages, has argued that something profound (深奥的) will disappear when people talk through machines. He describes giving a broken, difficult speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of satisfaction at the end.
As AI translation becomes an even more popular labour-saving tool, people can be divided into two groups. There will be those who want to stretch their minds, expose themselves to other cultures or force their thinking into new pathways. This group will still take on language study, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a mix of admiration and puzzlement, as they might with extreme endurance (耐力) sports: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a bit painful for my taste.”
But a focus on the learner alone misses the fundamentally social nature of language. It is a bit like analysing the benefits of close relationships to heart health but overlooking the inherent (固有的) value of those bonds themselves. When you try to ask directions in broken Japanese or ruin a joke in broken German, you are making direct contact with someone. And when you speak a language well enough to tell a story with perfect timing or put delicate differences on an argument, that connection is more profound still. The best relationships do not require a medium.
( )32. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about
A. Communicating through apps is simple.
B. Apps provide a one-way interactive process.
C. Using apps becomes more and more popular.
D. AI tools weaken the needs of language learning.
( )33. What is Douglas’ attitude to language learning
A. Favourable. B. Objective.
C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
( )34. What do we know about the second group mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. They are keen on foreign culture.
B. They long to join in endurance sports.
C. They find AI tools too complex to operate.
D. They lack the motivation to learn language.
( )35. How does the author highlight his argument in the last paragraph
A. By providing examples. B. By explaining concepts.
C. By stating reasons. D. By offering advice.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Emily is a sixth-grade student in a small American town. She is a curious and adventurous girl who always dreams of exploring new places. Last summer, her dream came true when she got selected for a student exchange programme to visit China.
Emily was super excited, but she knew that going to a different country with a brand new culture might not be easy. When she arrived in China, she had an open heart and lots of hope, but the cultural differences, the language barrier and the unfamiliar surroundings made her feel a bit overwhelmed.
On her first day at a Chinese school, she felt like she was in a completely different world. The students spoke a language she couldn’t understand, and the way things worked in the classroom was very different from back home. During lunchtime, poor Emily sat all by herself in a corner of the cafeteria, feeling lost and lonely. Just then, a friendly Chinese girl came up to her with a warm smile and said, “Hello, my name is Li Shanshan. I noticed you’re new here. Would you like to be our friend ”
Emily was so relieved and thankful for the friendly offer. “Thank you,” she replied with a big smile. “I’m Emily, and I’m really happy to meet you.”
Shanshan introduced Emily to her group of friends, and they all welcomed her with open arms. They helped Emily with her Chinese language, taught her about Chinese customs and shared their favourite Chinese foods. Slowly but surely, Emily started to feel more comfortable and understand the Chinese culture better.
One day, as the English teacher was planning her class schedule, she came up with an idea. She decided to assign each student in the class to do a presentation about their hometowns the next week. She believed this could be a great way for the students to learn about different cultures and improve their public speaking skills.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Emily was glad to do this but she didn’t know how to prepare.

Paragraph 2:
The day finally came and it was Emily’s turn to make the presentation.
