M: Nice! I’m looking forward to my birthday!
W: Yes, I’m sure you will get many nice gifts too.
Text 2
M: What a beautiful painting! Where did you buy it
W: Actually, I made it in my grandpa’s yard.
M: Really That’s amazing! I had no idea you were so talented. This looks like it was painted by a professional.
Text 3
M: Excuse me, can we leave our backpack and suitcase here
W: OK. That’s 4 dollars for the suitcase and 3 dollars for the backpack.
M: Fine, thanks. We’ll come and get them around 2 this afternoon.
Text 4
M: If it were not for the price, I would like to move somewhere with a nicer view than we have here.
W: But for me, the most important thing is to have large bedrooms and a good-sized kitchen.
Text 5
W: Nick Jones! Is that you We studied French and German together in Professor Brown’s class. Remember We always sat next to each other.
M: Anne White! Of course I remember. Anne, long time no see!
Text 6
W: Excuse me. I was wondering if anyone has turned in a passport. I can’t find mine anywhere in my hotel room and I remember the last place where I used it yesterday was in this department store. I had to show it to pay for those shoes with my traveller’s cheques.
M: Let me check. Sorry, your passport hasn’t turned up here either.
W: What shall I do
M: You can fill in this form to declare your loss first, then make a phone call to your embassy and tell them about your situation, so that they can give you a new passport in case it doesn’t show up.
W: You are right.
Text 7
M: Good morning. Since so many of you have asked me how to learn a language, I thought it might be useful to take some class time today to discuss it. Betty, you speak several foreign languages, don’t you
W: Yes, I speak Spanish and French.
M: And can you tell me what helped you most in learning these languages
W: Well, I studied both languages in high school, and I’m still studying Spanish here at the university. But I think travel has probably been the most helpful to me.
M: Yes. When you live in a country where the language you are learning is spoken, it’s perfect.
W: That’s true. But whether or not I’m living in a country where the language is spoken, I always watch TV or listen to the radio in the language I’m trying to learn.
M: That’s good.
Text 8
M: Tina, I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m afraid there is a big problem.
W: Oh, what’s up then
M: You told me last week that you would deal with the faulty desks returned by HDC, one of our local customers.
W: Yes, that’s right, I did send them the replacements for all the desks last Monday.
M: Well, the thing is, did you realize there were two kinds of faulty desks The customer only received one kind of desks.
W: Oh dear. I didn’t realize there were two kinds. I’ll send them the other kind right away.
M: The problem is that now they want to get their money back.
W: Oh dear, that’s really bad. I’ll phone them now and explain everything. I’m really sorry about this.
M: That’s all right. There’s still time to solve the problem. I think it would be best to visit them and explain the mistake face to face.
W: Okay. I’ll make arrangements and visit them as soon as possible. Sorry again.
Text 9
M: Well, Stella, why do you look unhappy
W: Oh, Bill, I have just had a quarrel with Mr Philips.
M: What on earth was it about
W: Well, I have made three bad mistakes so far this week. Today I forgot to give him an important message, so he got really angry with me.
M: But I don’t understand. You are usually very careful.
W: I’m just so tired.
M: Why Have you been going to bed late these days
W: No. I’m usually in bed at about eleven. But I’ve been woken up early every morning.
M: Why
W: It’s my new neighbour. He has to get up at half past four and he always turns the radio on loudly.
M: Ask him to turn it down or if you don’t want to see him, write him a letter.
W: Do you think it’s a good idea
M: Yes, I do. I’ll help you with the letter.
W: OK. Let’s try.
Text 10
W: What’s the attraction of coffee shops It’s been said that J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books sitting in one in Edinburgh. But you’re spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven’t sold your first novel yet, the costs can really add up. For those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there’s a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute cafe. You’ll be given a clock when you come in to keep time. When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill. The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting new people in the place is 3 pennies per minute or £1.80 an hour. Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat while accessing the Internet through Wi-Fi. The new coffee shop’s atmosphere is relaxing. The shop’s owner, Ivan Meetin, believes his coffee shop is a bit like “social media”, but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialize. Some feel so much at home that they wash the dishes. The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the cup, has proved popular in Russia. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea.
A
根据Esmeralda部分中的“First discovered in 1998…” 可知,Black Sea Shipwreck是在2018年被发现的;根据Gribshunden部分中的“There, it lay undiscovered until members of a local dive club came across it in the 1970s…”
根据Black Sea Shipwreck部分中的“It is the oldest undamaged shipwreck ever found. ‘A ship in such good condition from the classical world, is something I would never have believed possible,’ said Professor Jon Adams, the principal investigator of the team that found the wreck.”可知,这是迄今为止被发现的最古老的完好无损的沉船;结合Gribshunden部分中的“Considered one of the best-preserved shipwrecks of the period, it has slowly been revealing its secrets.”
根据Black Swan部分中的“After a long legal battle, the treasure was returned to Spain in 2012.” 故选A项。
B
根据第一段中“Although he had protested, his parents decided that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility, hard work, and respect for the land were valuable lessons.”
根据倒数第二段中“‘It feels like velvet (天鹅绒)!’ Eduardo beamed. An hour later, Eduardo was scratching Hercules on his neck and offering him carrots.”和最后一段中“That night, as they headed towards the house, Eduardo was inspired. His arms spreading wide, he inhaled and said, ‘Take a breath of that sweet country air!’”
通读全文,再结合最后一段“That night, as they headed towards the house, Eduardo was inspired. His arms spreading wide, he inhaled and said, ‘Take a breath of that sweet country air!’”
根据第二段中“The shifting baseline syndrome (综合征), where standards in a place change gradually, makes conservation more complex.”
根据第一段中“Shortsightedness about time limits modern conservation, with efforts often overlooking past healthy conditions of ecosystems in the context of climate and biodiversity crises.”和第三段“Recent shifts in California’s forest management practices, from stopping fires to embracing Indigenous Knowledge of controlled burns, exemplify the importance of understanding historical ecosystem dynamics. To enhance conservation, adopting a deep-time approach is crucial.”
根据画线词所在句“In short, assumptions based on the recent past may impede the understanding and protection of ecosystems.”(简而言之,基于最近过去的假设可能会妨碍对生态系统的理解和保护。) 结合第五段中“This strategy, considering historical dynamics, challenges assumptions about recent ecosystems and offers new conservation methods.”(考虑到历史动态的策略挑战了对近期生态系统的假设,并提供了新的保护方法。)和第六段“Rather than only focusing on removing urchins (海胆) or reintroducing sea otters, the researchers suggest employing teams of humans to selectively harvest kelp, as the Steller’s sea cow once did, to encourage fresh growth. This sustainable harvest could benefit both the ecosystem and human consumption.”(研究人员建议,与其只专注于清除海胆或重新引入海獭,不如雇用人类团队有选择地收获海藻,就像大海牛曾经做过的那样,以促进新鲜生长。
根据最后一段中“On the other hand, the application of controlled burns, similar modelling studies, and a deep-time perspective could significantly transform conservation efforts. Recognizing our role in an ongoing narrative spanning millions of years is essential, urging a comprehensive understanding of ecosystems through time.”(另一方面,控制燃烧、类似的建模研究和深度时间视角的应用可以显著改变保护工作。
根据文章第一段“The concept of learned helplessness was first coined by psychologists Martin Seligman and Steven Maier in the late 1960s during a series of experiments with dogs.”(习得性无助的概念最早是由心理学家马丁·塞利格曼和史蒂文·迈尔在20世纪60年代末对狗进行的一系列实验中提出的。)和最后一段“Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our mindset towards effort and success, we also need to be more conscious of our belief about personal competence, resisting the temptation to yield to learned helplessness. By fostering resilience and adopting a growth mindset, we can effectively manage our responses to life’s challenges and seize opportunities for improvement and success.”
根据文章第三段中的“As adults, we often encounter a version of learned helplessness in our daily lives. We face challenges not in the form of electric shocks but in situations where we might feel overwhelmed or powerless, such as long-standing stress at work or repeated personal failures.”(作为成年人,我们在日常生活中经常遇到一种习得性无助。
根据文章最后一段“Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our mindset towards effort and success, we also need to be more conscious of our belief about personal competence, resisting the temptation to yield to learned helplessness. By fostering resilience and adopting a growth mindset, we can effectively manage our responses to life’s challenges and seize opportunities for improvement and success.”

39.G 根据下文“We don’t just ask ourselves, ‘What’s wrong with me ’ We worry what others will think: ‘What’s wrong with them ’”可知,此处强调我们除了担心自己,还担心他人对我们假定的失败的看法,G选项(我们还担心他人会评判我们假设的失败。)
40.F 根据上文“Comparison could be deceptive.”以及下文“This may be temporarily true, yet, a comparison is an internal process that is ultimately based on our thoughts and sense of self, not external circumstances.”

One possible version:
Dear fellow students,
Noticing a serious phenomenon that some high school seniors burdened with schoolwork spare little time for regular physical exercise, I’d like to appeal to you to take proper exercise.
Doing sports is of great significance, which enables us to keep in shape and get refreshed after a long time of work. Therefore, I suggest we fit exercise into our busy schedule, making it part of our daily routine. Put down our books to stretch our arms from time to time and do some jogging and jumping every day.
It is high time that we should arouse our awareness of proper exercise.

One possible version:
That day, Coach Leong announced that he would be retiring after our competition. His voice trembled with emotion as he shared the news (as引导时间状语从句), casting a depressed mood over the team (现在分词短语作状语). Understanding dawned upon us—the upcoming game wasn’t just about winning; it was our last chance to honour Coach Leong’s dedication and years of hard work (不定式作定语). We doubled our efforts during practices, focusing on coordination, trust, and passing (现在分词短语作状语) rather than individual glory. Through sweat and perseverance, we gradually learned to function as a unit.
The day of the basketball match arrived. For one final inspiring talk, Coach Leong’s eyes gleamed with a mixture of hope and pride, which reminded us that this game was for him, for our school, and most importantly, for ourselves. Stepping onto the court (现在分词短语作状语), we played like never before—passing precisely, communicating effectively, and supporting each other at every turn. When the final whistle blew (when引导时间状语从句), marking our victory (现在分词短语作状语), tears welled up in Coach Leong’s eyes. When holding (省略结构) that championship trophy high, we knew we had not only won the game but also rediscovered the true essence of teamwork.

This Portuguese ship sank off the coast of Oman in 1503. First discovered in 1998 and then extensively excavated (发掘) by a team led by David Mearns between 2013 and 2015, it is the oldest shipwreck (沉船) recovered from Europe’s Age of Exploration.
Black Sea Shipwreck
Discovered in 2018 by a team from the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project, the ship sank more than 2,400 years ago. It is the oldest undamaged shipwreck ever found. “A ship in such good condition from the classical world, is something I would never have believed possible,” said Professor Jon Adams, the principal investigator of the team that found the wreck.
Gribshunden
The flagship of John, King of Denmark, caught fire and sank in the Baltic Sea in 1495. There, it lay undiscovered until members of a local dive club came across it in the 1970s; unaware of its significance, they did not report it to archaeologists until 2000, and not until 2013 was the wreck’s identity confirmed. Considered one of the best-preserved shipwrecks of the period, it has slowly been revealing its secrets.
Black Swan
In May 2007, a Florida-based company announced that, using underwater robots, it had discovered a shipwreck in the Atlantic, code-named (代号为) “Black Swan”. However, the government of Spain claimed that the wreck was the Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes, a Spanish ship that sank off the coast of Portugal in 1804 following a battle with four British navy ships. After a long legal battle, the treasure was returned to Spain in 2012.

Eduardo reached into his backpack, searching for his cellphone. He was scared of having to spend the spring break at Aunt Letty’s farm. Although he had protested, his parents decided that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility, hard work, and respect for the land were valuable lessons.
“So have you ever ridden a horse ” Aunt Letty asked, trying to turn his attention away from his phone. “Hmmm, no,” he answered. “Well, we’ve got a nice calm horse I think you’ll like. Hercules sounds like a beast, but he’s basically a gentle giant—big, but kind-hearted!” she said, smiling. Eduardo glanced at his aunt, annoyed that he was expected to work. He tried to text a friend but there was no cell reception.
The next few days were busy. The crow of the roosters woke them up, and they had breakfast before dawn. Then they went out to the barn to get the feed while the animals waited to be fed. The afternoons were filled with the transporting hay, clean-up, and caring for the animals. At dusk, when the farm was finally quiet, Aunt Letty stretched her arms out and inhaled (吸气), “Just take a deep breath of that sweet country air!” Eduardo, exhausted from his chores, was unable to appreciate his work.
On the third day, without warning, Aunt Letty announced, “It’s time to meet Hercules.” She led Eduardo into the stables. Aunt Letty was right. Hercules was remarkable!
Aunt Letty held her hand open for Eduardo to take. Reluctantly, he let her guide his hand towards Hercules and allowed the magnificent creature to sniff his palm. Softly, Hercules rubbed its nose and mouth against him.
“It feels like velvet (天鹅绒)!” Eduardo beamed. An hour later, Eduardo was scratching Hercules on his neck and offering him carrots.
That night, as they headed towards the house, Eduardo was inspired. His arms spreading wide, he inhaled and said, “Take a breath of that sweet country air!”

We need to think about conservation
on a different timescale
Time, perceived by humans in days, months, and years, contrasts with nature’s grander scales of centuries and millennia, referred to as “deep time” While paleontologists (古生物学者) are trained to think in deep time, conservationists are realizing the challenges it poses. Shortsightedness about time limits modern conservation, with efforts often overlooking past healthy conditions of ecosystems in the context of climate and biodiversity crises.
The shifting baseline syndrome (综合征), where standards in a place change gradually, makes conservation more complex. It involves evaluating ecosystems primarily on their recent past, often with negative consequences.
Recent shifts in California’s forest management practices, from stopping fires to embracing Indigenous Knowledge of controlled burns, exemplify the importance of understanding historical ecosystem dynamics. To enhance conservation, adopting a deep-time approach is crucial.
Modern mathematical modelling, combined with long-term data, offers a pathway for preserving ecosystems. In California’s kelp (海藻) forest, researchers identified an overlooked keystone species—the extinct Steller’s sea cow (大海牛). By examining past kelp forests, a deeper story impacting regeneration was revealed. The sea cow, a massive plant-eater, contributed to diverse, vital undergrowth by trimming kelp and letting light reach the area.
The researchers put forward a novel approach to kelp forest restoration: selectively harvesting kelp, imitating the sea cow’s impact. This strategy, considering historical dynamics, challenges assumptions about recent ecosystems and offers new conservation methods.
Rather than only focusing on removing urchins (海胆) or reintroducing sea otters, the researchers suggest employing teams of humans to selectively harvest kelp, as the Steller’s sea cow once did, to encourage fresh growth. This sustainable harvest could benefit both the ecosystem and human consumption.
In short, assumptions based on the recent past may impede the understanding and protection of ecosystems. On the other hand, the application of controlled burns, similar modelling studies, and a deep-time perspective could significantly transform conservation efforts. Recognizing our role in an ongoing narrative spanning millions of years is essential, urging a comprehensive understanding of ecosystems through time. Embracing this role is crucial for shaping the future and establishing vital connections from the past to the future.

( )30.What does the underlined word “impede” most probably mean
A.Reform. B.Disrupt.
C.Quicken. D.Deepen.
( )31.In terms of conservation, what can we learn from this passage
A.Shifting baseline syndrome has positive ecological changes.
B.Mathematical modelling with the latest data can be effective.
C.Deep-time perspectives and historical dynamics are crucial.
D.Recent history is more preferred in ecosystem restoration.

The concept of learned helplessness was first coined by psychologists Martin Seligman and Steven Maier in the late 1960s during a series of experiments with dogs.
The researchers placed dogs in a situation where they were subjected to unavoidable electric shocks. After these initial experiences, the dogs were later placed in a different situation where they could easily escape the shocks by moving to another part of the chamber. Surprisingly, many of the dogs did not attempt to escape, even when the means to do so were readily available. They had learned to feel helpless.
As adults, we often encounter a version of learned helplessness in our daily lives. We face challenges not in the form of electric shocks but in situations where we might feel overwhelmed or powerless, such as long-standing stress at work or repeated personal failures. These experiences can make us believe that we cannot change our circumstances, leading to a passive acceptance of our difficulties.
A similar process operates in our approach to problem-solving and goal-setting. In our formative experiences, we may have encountered situations where our efforts to succeed were consistently met with failure, leading to a sense of powerlessness. But the modern world, with its constant demands and high expectations, has greatly changed our environment. We are now constantly faced with new challenges and opportunities.
Our modern lifestyle—with its various sources of stress and anxiety—can do to our mental state what unavoidable shocks did to the dogs in Seligman’s experiments. We are tending to submit to hopelessness because our past experiences may have conditioned us to expect failure. But, as we have reshaped the world around us, increasing opportunities for success and personal growth, we still have the same psychological responses we developed in earlier, more challenging environments.
Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our mindset towards effort and success, we also need to be more conscious of our belief about personal competence, resisting the temptation to yield to learned helplessness. By fostering resilience and adopting a growth mindset, we can effectively manage our responses to life’s challenges and seize opportunities for improvement and success.
( )32.What do we know about learned helplessness according to the text

A.Advanced technology. B.High physical demands.
C.Lasting stress at work. D.Unbalanced career life.
( )34.What is the author’s attitude towards those who give in to helplessness
A.Indifferent and neutral.
B.Dismissive and critical.
C.Sympathetic and reserved.
D.Understanding and encouraging.
( )35.What is the underlying logic of the text
A.Cause and effect.
B.Problem and solution.
C.Comparison and contrast.

Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses
It is so easy to get caught up in a never-ending circle of comparing yourself to others and yet this seldom is beneficial. You may have heard the expression, “36. ” To me, this rings true as I have found it is quite difficult to compare myself to others and feel joy at the same time.
37. Typically, comparison leads to regarding others as superior to you in some way and feeling inadequate or inferior. “I am not as successful, capable and attractive as they are.” “Why don’t I have what they have ” We use comparison as an avenue for self-criticism, “What’s wrong with me I must be an inadequate loser.” 38.
We often tell ourselves we are acceptable only if we meet certain standards, and we evaluate how we measure up by looking at others. The tendency is to conclude that we are not measuring up, particularly if we have a low sense of self-worth. 39. We don’t just ask ourselves, “What’s wrong with me ” We worry what others will think: “What’s wrong with them ” The fear of rejection creates uneasiness and anxiety.
Comparison could be deceptive. 40. This may be temporarily true, yet, a comparison is an internal process that is ultimately based on our thoughts and sense of self, not external circumstances. We can always find something else to compare, another expectation we tell ourselves we are not meeting.
To stop comparing ourselves to others, we have to recognize that the comparison game is unwinnable and exhausting and stop playing.
A.This blocks self-acceptance.
B.Comparison is the thief of joy.
C.Values are a solution to comparison.
D.This can solidify your sense of self-acceptance.
E.Comparison robs us of joy and fuels self-criticism.
F.It tells us meeting expectations will make us happier.
G.And we worry others will judge our assumed failures.

Resting on my sofa after school, I gazed at my shelf of glistening gold medals and trophies (奖杯). A certain trophy caught my eye and I picked it up. “Sunshine Primary School 2016 Basketball Champion.” As I admired that trophy, I began to recall those incidents leading to how I received it.
When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team. Every month, we would have a basketball match against another school’s basketball team. In spite of the amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork. Our team would argue over little things and then, we would refuse to play after it. Our coach was at his wits’ end. Looking at the number of matches we had lost, I knew we had to do something.
During one of our training sessions, our team split into two to have a match against each other. “Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, yelled. John, who was in my team, managed to grab the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. From the moment John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone take it. “Pass the ball to me, John!” I exclaimed. I was at a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop then. To my dismay, John made an annoying face at me. Out of frustration, I leapt towards John and made an attempt to snatch the ball, which turned out to be a battle between John and me. Coach Leong shook his head and boomed like an active volcano, “Children! Is this the type of behaviour I should be seeing from you The match is in four weeks and if you are going to behave like this during the match, you will bring shame to me, the school and yourselves! Don’t you even know the importance of teamwork ” Coach Leong sighed and gave us a disappointed look. It seemed as if he had some sad news he hadn’t announced to us, but could not bear to do so. I was right.
Paragraph 1:
That day, Coach Leong announced that he would be retiring after our competition.

Paragraph 2:
The day of the basketball match arrived.
