Text 1
W: Would you prefer tea or coffee
M: I think a glass of cold water would be best. There is nothing like it when the weather is so hot.
Text 2
W: Oh, dear, I have locked the key in my room again. How I wish I could remember it!
M: Well, don’t worry. These things happen a lot.
W: What can we do now
M: Dial 911.
Text 3
W: My computer is running so slowly that I want to get a new one.
M: There’s a new computer coming out in early September.
W: Oh, no. I’m unwilling to wait three months. I’ll buy one next month.
Text 4
W: Hey, Mike. Why the long face
M: Well, it’s the speech contest. I thought I would win, but…
W: Cheer up, Mike. You’ve tried your best after all.
Text 5
W: Could you push the button for the tenth floor, please
M: Of course. Do you live in this building
W: No, I’m just visiting a colleague from work. She has an apartment on the tenth floor. Do you live here
M: Yes, I do. It’s not a bad building to live in, really.
Text 6
W: Excuse me. Do you think I can return this coat
M: What’s the problem with it
W: It’s too small.
M: OK. I see. I’m afraid I can’t give you a cash return, but you can change it.
W: I believe you sell it for $49.95.
M: Yes. I’ll take the coats of the same price for you to choose from.
W: That one looks nice. May I have a try
M: It’s $55.95. If you want it, you’ll pay some extra money.
W: OK. I will.
Text 7
M: I dropped the accounting class in college. Now I regret that. After graduation, I’ve been trying to find a job in accounting, but so far I haven’t succeeded.
W: It’s really difficult to find an ideal job, right
M: Yes. If I had not given up the accounting class then, I would become an accountant now.
W: Well, don’t be too hard on yourself. By the way, what do you think of your present job as a bank clerk
M: Frankly, if I had known it was so boring, I would never have accepted it.
W: I know. Well, you know I have a friend who works in an accounting firm. He wants to hire an assistant to help him deal with accounting affairs. I would like to recommend you to him.
M: Really Thanks a million. I owe you a meal.
Text 8
W: I visited the countryside museum last week. It opened two months ago. You’d like it there.
M: Why Is there lots of information about trees
W: No. It’s about wild birds that live in the forest. You can watch videos there too.
M: Oh! Is it open on Saturdays
W: Yes. It’s only closed on Mondays. I went on a Thursday.
M: And where is it
W: It’s fifteen miles from here. It took about twenty minutes to get there and about thirty to get home because the roads were busier then. Here’s a map for your parents.
M: Thanks.
W: When I went, there was a special plant exhibition but they’re having a study day for teenagers there soon about different kinds of clouds.
M: Do I have to pay for the study day
W: You’re fourteen, aren’t you
M: Yes.
W: Well, you won’t because it’s free for students who are your age or younger. But it costs £18 for students who are sixteen or older.
M: Thanks. I’ll tell my parents.
Text 9
W: Hi, John. Long time no see. How are you doing
M: I am doing OK. It would be better if I had a job.
W: Are you looking for a job
M: Yes. I graduated a month ago. Now, I want to get a job in the financial field.
W: How long have you been looking for a new job
M: I just started this week.
W: Didn’t you have any interviews with those firms that came to our campus two months ago I believe quite a few companies came to hire students for their Finance Departments.
M: I got only one interview. But I have not heard from them. I guess I did not make it.
W: Don’t worry. You always did well in school. Your good grades will help you get a job quickly. Besides, the job market is pretty good right now, and all companies need financial analysts. Did you mail your résumé to recruiting agencies
M: No, I have not thought about recruiting agencies. But, I do look closely at the employment ads listed in the newspaper every day.
W: Are there a lot of openings
M: Quite a few. Some of them require experienced candidates. What you suggested sounds good. I may give it a try.
Text 10
M: Holidays are happy days with pleasurable activities and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with those delicious foods. With proper planning though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you. Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a big dinner, have a small, low-fat snack. This may help to keep you from overeating when you see tables full of delicious food. Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate. A large plate will encourage you to have more than you need. Stay away from high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have a lot of fat in them. Choose meats containing little or no fat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. If you have a sweet tooth, try fruits. They don’t have as much fat as cream and chocolate. Don’t take a break from exercise during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off extra calories.

One possible version:
Dear Bob,
How is everything going
I’m writing to share with you a great experience. Recently, our school has built a labour practice base, which has become a favourite place for me and all my classmates. Last week, we participated in the labour practice actively. At the base, with the instructions of our teacher, we planted various vegetables and flowers, and learned how to take care of them. Looking at the plants that we planted, we experienced a great sense of achievement.
Not only did this experience allow us to learn practical skills, but also it made us appreciate the hard work of farmers.
Best regards,
Li Hua

One possible version:
A week later, Jon received a call from the company. Shifting uneasily in his chair (现在分词作状语), he picked up the phone. “Yes, this is Jon,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady (现在分词作状语). I watched him, my heart pounding (独立主格结构). As he continued to speak, his face lit up with an excited smile. When he hung up the phone, he turned to me, eyes shining (独立主格结构). He told me that they were really impressed with his interview (宾语从句), but what really stood out (主语从句) were the thank-you notes. The CEO mentioned that he was touched by the notes and appreciated the effort Jon put into thanking everyone (定语从句), including the receptionist. I felt a rush of pride and relief. I knew it would work.
The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table. Surprised (形容词作状语), I picked it up, unfolded it, and was greeted with Jon’s familiar handwriting. It was a thank-you note from Jon. He thanked me for pushing him to do his best and for teaching him the importance of gratitude, which had truly changed his life (定语从句). As I read the note, tears welled up in my eyes. I had always believed in the power of gratitude and a thank-you note, but seeing it come full circle like this (动名词作主语) was more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. Jon was not only succeeding in his career but also growing into a thoughtful and compassionate man. And that was the greatest gift of all.阶段素养测评卷(二)

Ammonia (氨) is one of many pollutants present in wastewater and can be poisonous for marine and land life. Therefore, in a process called air stripping (空气吹脱), it is removed from wastewater and later used as a fertilizer or fuel. Air stripping transforms ammonia into a gas that can then escape the wastewater from its surface. But this process is not efficient: it is energy-intensive, and requires specific temperatures, air supply, and a lot of chemicals, making it expensive.
Addressing these disadvantages, researchers from South Korea have demonstrated that the simple application of an electric field during air stripping can considerably improve the efficiency of ammonia removal, even under sub-standard conditions.
“So far, the removal of ammonia from wastewater was thought to be dependent on only pH, temperature, and air supply. However we have shown that an electric field can also act as a modulator (调节器) of this process,” says Prof.Young-Chae Song, the lead investigator on this study.
Prof.Song and his team used a combination of live experiments with an ammonia removal tank and deep learning to understand how electric fields of different strengths influence the efficiency of ammonia removal from wastewater. They found that electric fields with an alternating current of 50 MHz and a power of 15 V/cm significantly improve the ammonia removal efficiency, increasing it from 51% to 94%, even under sub-standard conditions. Therefore, improved ammonia yields could be achieved while considerably reducing the consumption of energy and chemicals.
Prof.Song comments, “Our findings showed that electric field application provides a similar efficiency of ammonia removal to conventional methods at a much lower temperature, air supply, and pH. Moreover, the energy needed to power the electric field is a minute part of the energy required to achieve these ‘excellent’ conditions.”
Indeed, this new electric field-coupled platform could provide a more economical way of getting ammonia from wastewater and reducing the carbon footprint associated with this process.
( )24.What happens to ammonia during air stripping
A.It becomes a fertilizer.
B.It stays on the water.
C.It changes into another state.
D.It disappears in the process.
( )25.What can be inferred from Prof.Song’s words
A.Electric fields slow the process of the removal.
B.Much energy is needed to achieve good conditions.
C.The removal of ammonia depends on electric fields.
D.The use of electric fields improves the traditional method.
( )26.What is the function of the new platform
A.To power air stripping.
B.To lower the temperature.
C.To provide economical energy.
D.To remove ammonia at a lower cost.
( )27.What is the text mainly about
A.The discovery of electric fields.
B.An electric field-coupled platform.
C.A new technological advancement.
D.Electric fields of different strengths.

When instant cake mixes first appeared in the 1950s, American housewives were doubtful. These mixes, promising easy cake-baking, felt too easy. The manufacturers discovered that requiring the addition of an egg in the baking process was just enough to make the housewives happy with their work. The greater sense of effort gained from a little extra labour is believed to have been essential to the later success of the cake mix.
This reflects the IKEA effect (宜家效应), which is identified by psychologist Michael I.Norton and his colleagues, suggesting we place greater value on things we have worked to create. They conducted four studies in which they asked participants to fold paper cranes and frogs, assemble IKEA boxes, and build sets of Legos. They then asked the builders to bid (出价) for their creations, and compared the prices with bids from people who hadn’t built them. The builders consistently outbid the non-builders.
Interestingly, the IKEA effect works even when people have no opportunity to fully personalize their creations. While most participants’ folding skills left much to be desired, they loved their imperfectly personalized products all the more. Builders valued their wrinkled crane-like creations nearly five times as much as non-builders. Beauty, it seems, is in the eye of the builder.
Today, as cities are suffering from severe housing crises, the IKEA effect can give us insights into the well-being benefits of a self-building approach to housing development. Projects like WikiHouse and the “half-a-house” approach pioneered by Alejandro Aravena’s architecture company Elemental are working to make housing more affordable and sustainable by making it easier for people to build and personalize their own homes.
“The moment people are involved with their built environment, they have a totally different relationship to it,” WikiHouse co-founder Alastair Parvin explained. “When the roof starts leaking or a door starts creaking, they have the power to fix it themselves.”

In an era of digital technology, the art of writing by hand has slowly been downgraded to a past entertainment. However, recent research suggests that this physical act is essential to brain health and development, having multiple cognitive benefits. It is time we should re-evaluate the potential benefits it may have on our mental capacities.
According to numerous studies, writing by hand stimulates more complex and diverse brain connections essential for encoding new information and forming memories. For instance, a recent investigation found that brain connectivity patterns were far more complicated and widespread for participants who wrote by hand compared to those who typed. Thus, it is clear that handwriting has a distinct and significant impact on our brain health.
Handwriting isn’t just good for our brain health—it also has clear, practical benefits. Research has shown that students who take handwritten notes score significantly higher on quizzes, demonstrating improved learning. This extends beyond the classroom too. People who recorded information on paper calendars demonstrated more brain activity and recalled information faster than those who used smartphones. The act of handwriting, therefore, could be a valuable tool for students preparing for exams and adults managing daily tasks.
Despite its clear benefits, handwriting has been on the decline. However, 25 states in the US have reintroduced writing back into school curriculums. This is a step in the right direction, as previous research has also indicated that handwriting is essential in children’s brain development. Preliterate (未识字的) children who wrote by hand demonstrated brain activity in a circuit of the brain used in learning to read, further strengthening the link between handwriting and cognitive development.
It is clear that handwriting is a valuable activity that has the potential to enhance our brain health, learning, memory, and problem-solving skills. As we continue to navigate the digital age, it is important not to overlook the value of this seemingly simple activity. So, the next time you reach for your keyboard, remember the benefits of picking up a pen instead.

Ask anyone how they’re feeling these days and chances are that they’ll reply with some version of “exhausted”. We’re tired of operating amid uncertainty. We’re tired of balancing childcare with work. 36. They direct our focus to the most readily available information to help us make decisions quickly without properly considering all the variables.
The result is that we are wired to move towards things that make us feel good and away from things that make us feel uncomfortable. 37. They default (默认) to what feels “normal”. Those networks are so deep in our thinking that when we’re travelling a new and challenging path, our wheels default back to the worn-in grooves (凹槽). So, how do we do hard things when our brains are constantly telling us to avoid effort
38. A 2016 study found that when people are upset, they’re less likely to try to do hard things. When they’re feeling upbeat, however, they’re more likely to take on the hard-but-essential tasks that ultimately make life better. One way we can get ourselves in the right mindset is to do what’s called “reappraisal”, in which we create a shift in our brains of how we perceive a task.
Moreover, we must give our brains the right amount of autonomy. When we have a choice, our brains often want to programme something easy. 39. Put it into a work context: Do I want to experiment with a new project management tool that might make things easier for my team next week, or do I want to stick with the same sheet that a former employee established and that none of us feel great about anyway
40. But by understanding what’s going on in your brain, you can work towards accomplishing hard things and manage your fears better.
A.Tackle them when we’re in a good mood.
B.Doing things like hard work can seem abnormal.
C.Our brains label effort as bad because it’s hard work.
D.We should be creative and open-minded when doing tasks.
E.This is called mindset fault, the tendency to do right things.
F.When we feel like this, our brains want to save mental energy.
G.But we can reduce the response by challenging ourselves to be innovative.

“Did you write your thank-you notes ” I asked my son, Jon.
“No, not yet, mum,” Jon replied, rolling his eyes.
He promised to do it when he got back from Kim’s house. However, I demanded that he not leave the house until he finished writing a note to everyone he came in contact with during the job interview.
“Even the receptionist who was rude to me ” Jon asked with a confused expression.
“Especially her!”
Jon was home on Christmas break from college and had just finished interviewing with his first-choice company in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a rare opportunity considering that jobs were in short supply.
The power of a thank-you note is something I drilled into my boy from the time he was old enough to hold a pencil. It didn’t matter if it was for a birthday, Christmas or graduation. Every gift had to be acknowledged with sincere gratitude within twenty-four hours.
Growing up, my mum was a stickler for thank-you notes. But she phrased it in such a way that it came across not as a threat but as a privilege. She’d say, “Your words of sincere gratitude have the power to change someone’s life for the better—even if it’s just for a moment.” Her advice changed my life, and it was my hope that it would change Jon’s life as well.
After an hour, Jon emerged from his room and handed over eight thank-you notes. To my delight, they were all sincere and heartfelt, even the one to the receptionist who had been less than friendly. Before Jon left to visit Kim, he turned to me and announced that he was pretty sure a thank-you note to the CEO or the receptionist wasn’t going to land him the job. With a smile, I told him to wait and see.
Jon was twenty-one years old, and I felt foolish telling a grown man what to do, but I also didn’t want him living in our basement for the rest of his life!
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
A week later, Jon received a call from the company.

Paragraph 2:
The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table.
