Text 1
W: I really want to go to the beach this weekend. The weatherman said it’s going to be warm.
M: Good. I hope it doesn’t cool off. You know that the weather in California is really changeable. One minute it’s hot, and then the next minute it’s cold.
Text 2
W: The weather forecast said that we would have another wonderful day tomorrow. Shall we go climbing Mount Tai
M: Good idea, but we’d better leave very early, or else we’ll get caught in traffic.
Text 3
M: I was going to buy a magazine but I changed my mind.
W: So what did you choose A storybook
M: I got a dictionary.
Text 4
W: There are 50 students in my Intro to History class! I’ve never been in a class with that many people. Last year, most of my classes had 20 students at most.
M: Yeah, my English class has 40 people, I think.
Text 5
W: What a beautiful day today! How about going for a walk in the park
M: I really want to go out, but I can’t.
W: Are you busy with anything now
M: No, but I got injured when I was playing football yesterday. My right foot still hurts when I walk.
Text 6
M: Hello, this is Peace Restaurant. May I help you
W: Yes. I’d like a table at 6:00 this evening.
M: Just a minute. I’m sorry, madam. There aren’t any tables left for 6:00 pm, but we can give you a private dining room at 7:00 pm.
W: That sounds good.
M: For how many people
W: Five couples.
M: All right. May I have your name, madam
W: Shelly.
M: All right! We’ve reserved a private dining room for you at 7:00 pm. Thanks for calling.
W: Thank you very much.
Text 7
W: Jeff, why did you come here We’ve agreed to meet at the restaurant at 8:00 pm, right
M: No, it is scheduled at 7:00 pm. I knew you would be mistaken, so I’m here to take you to dinner.
W: Sorry, I have my hands full now and forget the time.
M: That’s okay. Actually, it’s not fair to arrange so much work for you. Your boss is making life difficult for you.
W: I’m almost done with the work. There are some sports and literary magazines on the table. You can kill time by reading them while waiting for me. Besides, you can also watch movies on computer as long as you turn down the sound.
M: Okay. I just want to read the articles about table tennis.
Text 8
W: Jacob, your flowers aren’t growing very well.
M: Yeah. That’s why I called you here, Amy. I just started to learn to grow flowers recently and I don’t know what’s wrong with them. They are becoming less and less energetic.
W: Let me see… There’s too much water in the flowerpot. How often do you water them
M: I’m afraid they lack water in the hot sun, so I water them at noon every day.
W: Oh, that’s it. Jacob, listen, every two days or three days is enough. Flowers don’t need to be watered too often and too much watering can be damaging, which can cause the flowers to even die.
M: Oh, I never realize it. Luckily, the flowers look good.
W: Besides, it is also not advisable to water flowers at noon, especially in summer, as it can make their leaves turn yellow, just like yours. Well, I think I have to tell you more tips on how to grow flowers.
M: Yes. It’s much more convenient than learning from books.
Text 9
W: Hello, Ben! How was your weekend
M: Great, thanks! I visited York with Helen and the kids. York is a really beautiful historic city and there are lots of old buildings. And my friend booked us a really nice hotel.
W: Oh What did you do while you were there
M: Well, we visited the old castle on Saturday. I love history and the kids enjoyed exploring all the different rooms. And we visited the museum on Sunday. It’s so interesting. You can see what the town looked like in the past.
W: What did you do on Saturday evening
M: I wanted to go to a football match, but there were no tickets. So we went to see a movie instead. The kids liked it, but I didn’t. It was boring, to be honest.
W: What did you do for food
M: Helen likes trying new food different from Italian food. So we planned to go to a Thai restaurant. Helen enjoyed it, but the kids didn’t like the food, so we walked to a Chinese restaurant, further along the street.
Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. My name is Sam Thomas. I’m from WSP, short for Worldwide Students Project. It is a service organization which was set up to improve international understanding. Now we’ve got volunteers from 30 different countries working around the world. If you’re interested in joining us, I’d like to tell you about some of the projects. There are three kinds of projects to choose from: short-term projects, lasting 2 or 3 weeks, medium-term projects lasting between 1 and 6 months and long-term projects, which can be up to a year. The first project I’d like to tell you about is in Japan. It’s a village improvement project. You’d be working with local people. So, you need knowledge of Japanese for that. It is for 3 weeks. The next one is a children’s holiday centre in Poland. The work includes painting rooms, gardening and things like that. It’s a medium-term one lasting 6 weeks. The final project is for the medical students here. There is a placement in a centre for disabled children in India. You’d be providing medical care there. You’ll work for 6 months there. So you can get plenty of experience and do something for the disabled children.
A
根据OverDrive部分“Many borrowed e-books, e-audiobooks and e-videos can be downloaded to the free Libby app or OverDrive app for mobile devices.”和Hoopla部分“Everything can be downloaded instantly!”
根据Freading部分“Freading highlights travel books and has a large collection of frequently updated travel guides, which offer affordable ways to see the sites that you want when you travel.”
根据Mango部分“Do you want to learn a new language Try the Mango Languages Library Edition app!”
根据第一段“The arguments—over a fork, or who had more water in a glass—never stopped.”
根据第三段“…she said,‘I don’t want to give them the iPads at the dinner table, but if they keep them occupied for an hour so we can eat in peace, I often just hand them over. I am afraid that it’s bad for them. I do worry that it makes them think it’s OK to use electronic devices at the dinner table in the future.’”
根据倒数第二段“…if people spend too much time on one technology, and less time interacting(互动)with people like parents at the dinner table, that could prevent the development of certain communication skills.”
根据最后一段“She fears that children who do not learn real interactions, which often have imperfections, will come to know a world where perfect, shiny screens give them a false sense of intimacy(亲密) without risks.”
根据第二段“Since January 2022, about 460,000 people in England who suffer from atrial fibrillation(AF)—a dangerously irregular heart rate—have begun taking one of four anticoagulant(抗凝血剂) drugs that are proved to reduce stroke risk. Speedy introduction of the drugs has kept 4,000 people alive who would otherwise have died and prevented about 17,000 strokes, according to Amanda Pritchard. Strokes kill about 27,000 people a year in England and lead to about 120,000 being taken to hospital.”
根据第五段“The drugs, called direct oral anticoagulants, help stop blood from clotting(凝血), therefore reducing the risk of a clot developing and causing a stroke.”
根据最后一段“NHS England has used its spending power to cut deals with the makers of the four drugs…” 故选A。
根据第一段“Thousands of lives have been saved by giving blood-thinning drugs to people with a heart condition that leaves them at risk of a stroke(中风), according to the head of the NHS(National Health Service).”和最后一段“NHS England has used its spending power to cut deals with the makers of the four drugs, which has made them much more widely available. The British Heart Foundation praised the NHS’s ‘great progress towards its goal of reducing stroke deaths’.”
根据第一段中Grant Canary的话“When wildfire destroys a forest, what is a good choice for recovering what has been lost Across the world, there have been many types of agriculture, so how do you affordably replant the destroyed land And that’s where our technology comes in…”
根据第一段中“DroneSeed will fly drones to prepare for a new forest on top of the one that has been burnt. Carrying 57 pounds of tree seeds, the drones work in teams to find destroyed areas and spread seeds. They are six times faster than planting seedlings by hand. This can also help make the cost of planting seedlings 60%—70% less than that of traditional reforestation (再造林).”
画线词所在句下文“Tree planters do a valuable job well, but there are fewer tree planters due to the difficulty and low pay of the work. Meanwhile, the work of replanting a forest after a fire is beyond the abilities of human labour. Luckily, drones can send dozens of seed packets. This has many advantages. It removes unwanted and dangerous jobs from both planters and pilots whose near-ground work is difficult. A truck with a line of drones can prepare more and cover far more ground than human operations. And the process is easily observed and controlled.” ,substitute for与take the place of意思相近。
根据第三段中Jay Zaveri的话“Global reforestation is important in fighting against climate change, so we’ve helped DroneSeed from the very start. Since then, DroneSeed has put in its efforts to reforest land, found a successful way and changed the experience of forest development.” 故选A项。
36.C 上文“We imagine that they have been left by shoppers like us who want to share their knowledge with others, so the reviews would be of great value to us.”和下文“Some of them are writing positive reviews in return for a payment or gifts from the maker.”
37.G 上文“A careful study of thousands of reviews on a popular shopping website showed that a surprisingly large number of reviewers gave either four-or five-star ratings to the product. Two-or three-star ratings both accounted for less than ten percent of the total, which looked suspicious(可疑的).”
38.A 上文“You would expect therefore to see a variety of scores.”说明购物者希望看到各种各样的评价,下文“It seems that anyone who writes a large number of good reviews is given a special treat by the shopping website.” 故选A项。
39.E 上文“It seems that anyone who writes a large number of good reviews is given a special treat by the shopping website.”
40.F 下文“So, a good and responsible organization seems to be the best answer.”

One possible version:
My best friend
It’s true that everyone has his or her best friend. My best friend is Li Ping, who is a lively and easy-going girl in my class. Not only does she do well in her academic subjects, but she is also ready to help others.
Undoubtedly, what brings us together is common interests and hobbies. There are two things that we enjoy doing together: reading literary works and listening to classical music. More importantly, we share similar views on life and the world around us.
As emotional creatures, we human beings need family affection as well as friendship. Without friends, our life would be like a wild desert.

Smiling gently (现在分词作状语), she asked if I’d like to have a try (宾语从句). “But I’m not good at acting and I’m afraid of making things worse,” in a low voice, I said. Mrs Sather patted me on the shoulder, saying, “Don’t worry, dear. From your writing I know you are a brave girl inside. All you need to do (主语从句) is overcome your fear and take the first step. You can do it. I have faith in you.” Hearing Mrs Sather’s words (现在分词作状语), I realized it was time to make a change (宾语从句;重要句式:it is time to do sth是时候做某事了).
One week later, it was time for me to perform on the stage. I felt really nervous at first. Then I remembered all the hard work that I’d put in over the last week I devoted myself to (重要搭配:devote oneself to…致力于……,专心于……) the play, studying the character, memorizing lines and practising before the mirror. Gradually, I became more and more confident on the stage. Through misty eyes, I saw Mrs Sather, who was smiling at me and looking at me encouragingly I knew I made it! I was very grateful to Mrs Sather.

The other day, my sister and I were sitting in the restaurant, trying to have a conversation, but her children, four-year-old Willow and seven-year-old Luca, would not stop fighting. The arguments—over a fork, or who had more water in a glass—never stopped.
Then my sister reached into her handbag, produced two shiny iPads, and handed one to each child. Suddenly, the two were quiet. They sat playing games and watching videos, and we continued with our conversation.
After our meal, as my sister stuffed the iPads back into her bag, she said, “I don’t want to give them the iPads at the dinner table, but if they keep them occupied for an hour so we can eat in peace, I often just hand them over. I am afraid that it’s bad for them. I do worry that it makes them think it’s OK to use electronic devices at the dinner table in the future.”
Dr Gary Small, the director of the Longevity Centre at the University of California, Los Angeles says that the brain is highly sensitive to stimuli (刺激物), like iPads and smartphone screens, and that if people spend too much time on one technology, and less time interacting (互动) with people like parents at the dinner table, that could prevent the development of certain communication skills.
“Conversations with each other are the way children learn to have conversations with themselves, and learn how to be alone,” said Sherry Turkle, a professor of Science, Technology and Society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She fears that children who do not learn real interactions, which often have imperfections, will come to know a world where perfect, shiny screens give them a false sense of intimacy(亲密) without risks. However, they need to be able to gather themselves together and know who they are. So some day they can form a relationship with another person without a panic of being alone. “If you don’t teach your children to be alone, they will only know how to be lonely,” she said.

Thousands of lives have been saved by giving blood-thinning drugs to people with a heart condition that leaves them at risk of a stroke (中风), according to the head of the NHS(National Health Service).
Since January 2022, about 460, 000 people in England who suffer from atrial fibrillation (AF)—a dangerously irregular heart rate—have begun taking one of four anticoagulant (抗凝血剂) drugs that are proved to reduce stroke risk. Speedy introduction of the drugs has kept 4, 000 people alive who would otherwise have died and prevented about 17, 000 strokes, according to Amanda Pritchard. Strokes kill about 27, 000 people a year in England and lead to about 120, 000 being taken to hospital.
A drive to encourage take-up of the drugs means 90% of the 1.5 million people in England with AF are using them. That should result in fewer strokes, which are a leading cause of death and disability, given that AF causes about one in five strokes.
“The rapid introduction of these drugs is a big step forward in providing the best possible care for patients with heart disease,” Pritchard, the leader of NHS England, will say in a speech today at the King’s Fund annual conference.
The drugs, called direct oral anticoagulants, help stop blood from clotting (凝血), therefore reducing the risk of a clot developing and causing a stroke. In 2021 the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommended that doctors use four anticoagulant drugs.
Dr Maeva May, the Stroke Association’s director, thought the widespread use of the drugs as “fantastic news”, because AF accounts for one in five strokes and strokes in people with AF are more likely to result in death or serious disability.
NHS England has used its spending power to cut deals with the makers of the four drugs, which has made them much more widely available. The British Heart Foundation praised the NHS’s “great progress towards its goal of reducing stroke deaths”.

“When wildfire destroys a forest, what is a good choice for recovering what has been lost Across the world, there have been many types of agriculture, so how do you affordably replant the destroyed land And that’s where our technology comes in,” says Grant Canary, CEO of DroneSeed, a Seattle developer of a drone(无人机) data platform. DroneSeed will fly drones to prepare for a new forest on top of the one that has been burnt. Carrying 57 pounds of tree seeds, the drones work in teams to find destroyed areas and spread seeds. They are six times faster than planting seedlings by hand. This can also help make the cost of planting seedlings 60%—70% less than that of traditional reforestation (再造林).
DroneSeed can substitute for human tree planters. Tree planters do a valuable job well, but there are fewer tree planters due to the difficulty and low pay of the work. And the process is easily observed and controlled.
Jay Zaveri, a partner at Social Capital said, “Global reforestation is important in fighting against climate change, so we’ve helped DroneSeed from the very start. Since then, DroneSeed has put in its efforts to reforest land, found a successful way and changed the experience of forest development.”
DroneSeed is a one-stop shop for reforestation services. DroneSeed has got a fund of $36 million. The company will use some funds to buy Silvaseed, a 130-year-old company, to expand(扩大) its seed collection and planting services. In addition, DroneSeed plans to expand further to meet the growing need for reforestation assistance by the middle of next year. And it will add more reforestation projects and expand its services to more places in the future.

Whenever we are planning to buy something online, most of us prefer to look at the reviews first. We imagine that they have been left by shoppers like us who want to share their knowledge with others, so the reviews would be of great value to us. 36. Some of them are writing positive reviews in return for a payment or gifts from the maker. How do we know this
A careful study of thousands of reviews on a popular shopping website showed that a surprisingly large number of reviewers gave either four-or five-star ratings to the product. Two-or three-star ratings both accounted for less than ten percent of the total, which looked suspicious (可疑的). 37. Not everything being sold on the shopping website could be first class! We all know that some false information is provided. Some products that you buy on shopping websites can be terrible. You would expect therefore to see a variety of scores. 38.
It seems that anyone who writes a large number of good reviews is given a special treat by the shopping website. 39. How should a shopper reply to all these “wonderful” reviews The best thing to do is have access to a website run by some organizations such as Which in the UK. The Which product evaluation is based on strict tests carried out by experts and then on reviews by trusted shoppers who are Which members. They are not allowed to take free gifts from makers.
40. So, a good and responsible organization seems to be the best answer.
A.So why are most reviews positive
B.Reviews differ from person to person.
C.However, not all reviewers are like this.
D.So how can we tell true reviews from false ones
E.These “top” reviewers are then given free products.
F.Shoppers need protection from misleading reviews.
G.If those reviews were true, a broad spread of ratings would be given.

My best friend

In the first grade in senior high school, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations.
I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy; I often imagined that I was the main character in the story. My teacher, Mrs Sather, always encouraged me to write more and be myself. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with great efforts. I thought she was one of the first people to see my inner strength.
One day, she showed us a play she had written and announced that our class was going to perform it. “I’ll begin to choose all the performers tomorrow,” she said. “I need someone who is not afraid to be onstage in front of a lot of people to play the leading part of Dorothy. Anybody wants to try ” A few excited hands shot up—mine, of course, was not one of them and Mrs Sather smiled. “We’ll talk more about it later,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.
“I will never do that,” I thought. But after rereading the play, I was deeply attracted by the story and couldn’t help imagining myself to be the main character Dorothy. There seemed to be a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear. However, I still felt shy and could never picture myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. Having struggled for a few minutes, I still did not know how to make the decision.
Paragraph 1:
When I was packing my schoolbag, Mrs Sather asked me to go to her office.

Paragraph 2:
One week later, it was time for me to perform on the stage.
