Moya Crokett has just wrapped up her volunteer service with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Bolivia, a country in South America.
In May 2024, Moya first spotted a UN Volunteers recruitment (招募) notice and applied without hesitation. “I’ve always been passionate about volunteering and making a difference,” she explained — a drive evident throughout her university years, when she spent three years on a public welfare committee.
Even with her rich experience, landing the UN role wasn’t easy. Moya studied the UN’s mission, taught herself basic Spanish and learned about Bolivia’s history, environment and culture. Her hard work paid off, and she was finally accepted.
Upon arriving in La Paz, Bolivia, the world’s highest capital city, Moya struggled with altitude sickness (高原反应) and stomach issues from the local food. But she adjusted fast. When heavy rainfall triggered (引发) landslides, as a WFP resource mobilization assistant, she rushed to the disaster zone to help distribute relief supplies, ensuring families got food and other essential aids. She also used her photojournalism skills from university to film interviews for WFP’s social media.
Besides the volunteer work, cultural exchange was an important part of Moya’s experience in Bolivia. She shared Canadian food with locals and fellow volunteers. On International Volunteer Day 2024, Moya and her peers talked about the responsibilities and challenges of their work. “Despite different nationalities, we are all united by a shared belief: the desire to help and serve others.” she noted.
Through her experience in Bolivia, Moya realized that volunteering needs strong belief and commitment. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve this welcoming country so young, and I’m proud of the work,” she said. Her journey to this less-developed country showcased her courage, faith and independence.
4. What motivated Moya to apply for the UN Volunteers Program
A. Her desire to travel to South America.
B. Her interest in Bolivianculture.
C. Her university’s requirement for graduation.
D. Her enthusiasm for volunteering and making a positive impact.
5. To get accepted by the program, Moya made all the following preparations except ______.
A. Learning Spanish. B. Practicing photojournalism skills.
C. knowing about UN’s mission. D. Acquiring some knowledge of Bolivia.
6. Which of the following best describe Moya’s work in Bolivia
A. Simple yet enjoyable. B. Dangerous and stressful.
C. Challenging but meaningful. D. Demanding and well-paid.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. An Unforgettable Journey to Bolivia. B. Serving with Courage and faith.
C. Challenges in Volunteering Work. D. A Canadian Girl’s Adventure.

Ugly dogs and other less attractive pets may not be the prettiest, yet they still pull at our heartstrings. What’s going on
Every June in Petaluma, California, judges examine a lineup of funny faces, crooked teeth, big eyes and messy whiskers (胡须) to decide the winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest. The dogs competing for this questionable title often melt the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. Funny-looking pets are also common in viral internet content.
So why do we find odd-looking animals so appealing
Evolution plays a role. According to Austrian zoologist Konrad Lorenz, human attraction to baby-like features, such as big eyes, large heads and soft bodies, is an evolutionary adaptation that helps ensure that adults care for their offspring, guaranteeing the survival of their species. These features were coined “baby schema” by Lorenz in 1943.
Animals such as blobfish, pugs (哈巴狗), and bulldogs all share these baby-like features that cause a caring response from humans. They trigger a natural instinct to nurture and protect.
There are other reasons we like “ugly-cute” animals. Some, like the blobfish or naked mole rat, live in extreme environments. Scientists study these animals to understand if their biology might provide insights that could lead to treatments for human health issues like cancer and heart disease.
But there are concerns with this trend. Vets urge people not to choose flat-faced dogs because they have serious health problems. Pugs and French bulldogs are bred to have short noses and often experience trouble breathing, skin infections and eye issues. Many pugs make snoring and wheezing noises due to their blocked airways.
So while silly features such as big eyes and wrinkly faces may make us smile, we might want to rethink our love of “ugly-cute” pets.
8. According to the text, what event takes place every June in Petaluma, California
A. A conference on animal evolution. B. A competition for the “World’s Ugliest Dog.”
C. A health check-up event for flat-faced dogs. D. A study on animal internet pet content.
9. What do we know about “baby schema”
A. It refers to baby animals’ behavior. B. It ensures humans care for pets.
C. It stimulates human’s desire to protect. D. It helps adults recognize their babies.
10. Why do scientists study animals like the blobfish or naked mole rat
A. To explore potential human health treatments. B. To prove evolution influence.
C. To cure their serious health problems. D. To train them for extreme environments.
11. Why vets warn people against choosing flat-faced dogs
A. They require special care. B. They are costly to adopt.
C. They have severe physical restrictions. D. They have short lifespans.
D
Living in a house made of fungi (真菌) may sound like something from a sci-fi movie. But a new study in Cell Reports Physical Science shows that we’re getting closer to making it a reality.
Normally, people use cement (水泥) to build houses. However, it can harm the environment. Chatham House, a think tank, reported that more than 4.4 billion tons of cement produced every year are responsible for about 8 percent of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
The research team added special bacteria to fungal mycelium (菌丝体), which connects fungal networks underground like roots. The bacteria create calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), the substance in eggshells, making the soft mycelium hard and strong. This process, called biomineralization (生物矿化), uses tiny, living things to grow building materials.
While other biomineralized building materials typically last only a few days or weeks, this new material stays strong for at least a month. This might be because, while the bacteria made the mycelium hard, the structure it forms also makes the bacteria stronger. When bacteria live within a material for longer, they can do cool things like fixing themselves when damaged and cleaning up pollution, said the UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
“However, before using the new material for homes or other buildings, more testing is needed,” Avinash Manjula from Northeastern University in the US told CNN. He mentioned that small experiments don’t reflect the real strength of the material. “I think in the future, they could be useful for single-story buildings, these smaller structures — it’s very much feasible.” he said.
Another study shows that biomineralization has already been widely applied in many fields, including repairing ancient buildings and making soil stable.
While looking promising in labs, it faces significant challenges in real-world applications. Releasing these microbes into the environment could harm nature or people, as there are toxic byproducts (有毒的副产品) that need careful management.
Different places have their own rules, making it tough to use these technologies everywhere. Moreover, construction biotechnology needs experts from diverse fields, such as biology, engineering and materials science, to work together but they often operate independently.
12. What is the problem with using cement to build houses according to the passage
A. It’s not strong enough. B. It consumes too much energy
C. It’s too expensive. D. It’s bad for the environment.
13. What does the underlined word “feasible” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Achievable. B. Affordable. C. Impossible. D. Comfortable.
14. What can be inferred about the current stage of the new fungal building material
A. It will soon replace cement in large-scale construction.
B. It is already widely used in repairing ancient structures.
C. It requires further real-world testing before practical application.
D. It produces no toxic byproducts during production.
15. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about
A. The challenges of using biomineralized materials.
B. The future of biomineralized materials.
C. The wide application of biomineralization.
D. The harmful effects of construction biotechnology.

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who instructed him in reading and writing. Mr. Rose told his son that once his morning lessons were finished, he might amuse himself for one hour as he pleased.
Not far from their home flowed a river, beside which stood a hut of a poor fisherman. The man supported his family by selling fish, while his wife worked tirelessly at her spinning wheel from dawn until dusk. They both worked very hard to make ends meet, yet they were deeply concerned that their only son would never learn to read and write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
One afternoon, Charles called at the fisherman’s hut to inquire about his missing dog. There he found the little boy, Joe, seated by the table, intently crawling marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.
“No.” replied Joe, “I am trying to write, but I know only two words. Those I saw upon a sign and I am trying to write them.”
“If I could only learn to read and write,” he continued with a sigh, “I would be the happiest boy in the world.”
“Then I will make you happy” Charles declared, “I may be young, but I can teach you that. My father allows me one hour each day to do as I wish. If you are willing to learn, you will soon know how to read and write.”
Both Joe and his mother were on the verge of kneeling down to thank Charles. They told him this was what they desired more than anything else.
So, the next day when the hour came, he put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles soon began to teach him how to write.
Sometime after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles didn’t always amuse himself. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”

The moment the gentleman left, Mr. Rose rushed out to search for his son. His mind filled with worry about Charles’ safety, he finally reached the small hut. Mr. Rose was about to push the door open when a soft murmur from inside made him pause. Curious, he leaned gently against the window and peeked in. There Charles bent over the table, holding a piece of chalk to guide Joe’s hand as they traced letters together with Joe’s eyes sparkling with excitement. Mr. Rose’s heart softened instantly— his son was using the hour to give warmth to those in need. He knocked softly, and when Charles turned around, he smiled and said “It’s time to go home, but we can come back tomorrow.”
The following day, Mr. Rose took Charles to a bookstore in the town. He picked out two new primer books— one for Charles, and the other for Joe— and even bought a small box of chalk. “Let’s make sure you both have the tools to learn well.” Mr. Rose said, patting Charles’ shoulder, “Every child deserves a chance to read and write.” From that day on, Charles’ morning lessons included Joe— they sat side by side at Mr. Rose’s table, turning pages and practicing words together. Charles still had his “free hour”, but now it was filled with laughter as he and Joe reviewed what they’d learned, making that small corner of the country a place of hope and friendship.
