81.Dear Jessica,
I’m Li Hua. Learning that our school will select 10 students to be the volunteers of the cultural exchange activity between China and other countries, I’m writing to apply for the opportunity.
I’m confident that I am a right person for this activity. Firstly. I am fluent in English, which plays an important role in communicating with foreigners. Secondly, I have learned shadow plays for eight years and am capable of performing them well. What’s more, I’m outgoing and can get on well with others.
I would appreciate it if you could give me this chance.
Yours sincerely,

I'm a strong believer that learning different languages makes you look incredibly good when you're in a foreign country and can understand and speak the language. The list below is 4 apps that will help you learn a foreign language! You can download them for free.
Babbel: Learn Languages
Babbel is an excellent language tool to help you progress step by step with learning a new language. It helps you learn grammar along the way as you work your way through the tasks and assignments. You need to pay a monthly subscription (定金), but this will still be cheaper than taking physical lessons with a tutor!
Duolingo: Learn Languages Free
The app has many languages to choose from and will work through the basics all the way to advanced words and sentences. It's all completely free too! It's incredibly well designed, looks great and will help you learn, remember and progress with just a little bit of time every day.
Tandem: Language Exchange
Rather than have you work through tasks and memorize different things, the app lets you match with people who share your interests but speak the language you want to learn. You can then have text, voice and video conversations with people who want to learn your native language, and in return you learn theirs, all by simply communicating with each other. It's a great way to learn with only $1 a day.

Moments after figure skaters finish their program, fans throw gifts onto the ice. There have definitely been some strange ones over the years. As NBC Sports reports, Sasha Cohen was once given sweaters; Canada's Elvis Stojko and Patrick Chan walked away with lingerie (内衣); Debi Thomas even got a box of Domino's pizza after her performance at the 1987 world championships because Thomas had wondered why people “don't throw something good, like pizza”.
The post-program offerings are mostly stuffed (填充的) animal toys. Though it's not clear exactly how or when this custom began, people really like to use them as gifts. Flowers, once the popular item to throw at skaters, are messy. The cleaners—the kids who skate around to collect all the gifts between programs—have a much easier time to deal with stuffed toys than fighting with every leaf that fell off the flowers.
There's no global ban (禁令) on sending flowers, but organizations have made attempts to discourage the practice in the past. In 1989 US Figure Skating banned arenas (圆形运动场) hosting national championships from selling flowers.
“Flowers have always been a problem. The flowers and leaves can appear during the course and become a risk. So flowers on the arena are going to vanish. It is just a question of when.” said Larry Kriwanek, chair of the event's organizing committee. Instead, fans could buy already-authorized stuffed toys inside the arena and show their favorite skaters with those.
Stuffed toys also give supporters an opportunity to choose presents that suit their favorite skaters characters. “We will sometimes get stuffed toys made in custom costumes to match what we're wearing,” American ice dancer Meryl Davis, who won gold with partner Charlie White in 2014, told NBC Sports. It turns out that skaters often do try to take especially meaningful or thoughtful gifts home with them.
5.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A.Why skaters are supported by so many people.
B.How skaters collect gifts from fans after the show
C..Why sending stuffed toys to skaters is popular.
D.How fans can show their love to their favorite skaters.
6.Why does the author mention 1989 US Figure Skating
A.To provide an example B.To make a comment.
C.To explain a phenomenon. D.To draw a comparison.
7.What does the underlined word “vanish” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Change. B.Dry. C.Increase D..Disappear.
8.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Education. B.Travel. C.News D.Sports.

Though the Tokyo Olympic Games closed on Aug 8, the public is still watching the athletes. The technologies that helped them in the competition have attracted people's attention.
Su Bingtian is the first Chinese sprinter (短跑运动员) to reach an Olympic 100 final, setting an Asian record of 9.83 seconds in his semi-final. “It takes Su 47 steps to run 100 meters. Each step is very important,” a member of Su's training team said. “Randy Huntington, Su's American coach and a biomechanics (生物力学) expert in track and field, has collected a lot of data on outstanding sprinters and built a database. He put in all of Su's data and got a best model. When Su is training, the team uses high-speed cameras to record his training and compares it with the model to find out his weaknesses.”
Technology is also useful in table tennis. On July 27, the semifinal match between China's Sun Yingsha and Japan's Mima Ito was going on intensely in Tokyo. You wouldn't have guessed that a power AI platform was monitoring the match. At an average speed of 100 Mbps, the data was sent to technical team of the Zhejiang University Table Tennis Intelligent Big Data Analysis Platform, 2,442 kilometers away from Tokyo.
The platform has stored the data of more than 8, 000 matches so far. The research team has been working on match simulation (模拟) since 2018. “Using big data and AI, we can exactly simulate and predict how the winning rate will change when players change certain tactics (策略).” Professor Wu Yingcai said. The Tokyo Olympic Games have seen not only scientific support in training, but many newly developed and cutting-edge technologies in athletes' devices. For example, the Kenya women's volleyball team's GPS devices collected data on each player's strength, heart rate and so on to coaches, who used the information to prevent injury and design training plans for each individual.
9.According to Su Bingtian's training team, what is important for his better achievement
A.His outstanding talent. B.His coach's active encouragement.
C.Support from other sprinters D .His scientific training.
10.What is the advantage of match simulation according to Wu Yingcai
A Players can know their own disadvantages.
B.It helps players improve their winning chance.
C.It helps coaches collect lots of data.
D.Players can study other players' skills.
11.What does the underlined word“cutting-edge” in the last paragraph mean
A.Necessary.. B.Expensive. C.International. D.Advanced
12.What does the article mainly talk about
A.The ways athletes prepared for the Tokyo Olympics.
B.The excellent athletes winning at the Tokyo Olympics.
C.The wonderful moments of the Tokyo Olympics.
D.Technologies helping athletes at the Tokyo Olympics.

Some people say global English is no longer just controlled by British or American English, but is running free and developing uniquely local forms. Can you figure out the following terms
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.” This is a way of saying “Keep off the grass.” Or “people mountain, people sea”, which means “very crowded”.
These examples are what we call Chinglish. When it comes to Chinglish, if all you know is “good good study, day day up”, you will be considered “out man”.
Nowadays, more Chinglish words have been created, for example, a Chinese idiom is translated as “smilence”, a combination by the English word smile and silence.
Chinglish usually offers a humorous look at misuses of the English language in Chinese street signs, products, and advertising. They are favoured by some English speaking tourists and visitors. Dominic Swire has been living in Beijing for a couple of years. “I think many Chinese people complain about the Chinglish and badly translated English. But you know, sometimes for us foreigners, it's actually quite charming to see them. I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from Chinese culture.”
However, Chinglish will probably become a “cultural relic” in the near future. Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years. “It is very ridiculous to see Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barrier for communication between Chinese and people from other countries,” a Beijinger said.
Some Chinese university experts side with Chinglish. They argue that English has absorbed elements from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and now it's Chinese's turn.
13.What does “smilence” most probably mean
A.Saying nothing but to smile. B.Smiling without being noticed.
C.Laughing at somebody. D.Knowing little about speech.
14.What is Swire's attitude to Chinglish
A.It can show the humour of Chinese. B.It will attract more foreign tourists.
C.It helps him to learn Chinese well. D.It seems part of Chinese culture.
15.Why Chinglish is likely to become a “cultural relic” in Beijing
A.Because it has become a unique bridge between Chinese and English.
B.Because Chinglish is a chance to enrich Chinese and English.
C.Because it improves the understanding between Chinese and foreigners.
D.Because Beijing is determined to get rid of Chinglish signs.
16.What can we call Chinglish
A.English words which get new Chinese meanings.
B.The Chinese words which are difficult to translate.
C.The words combining English vocabulary and Chinese grammar.
D.The local words preventing foreigners from learning Chinese well.

As a high school coach, I did all I could to help my boys win their games. One thing, however, changed my view on victories. I was refereeing (担任裁判) a championship basketball game between New Rochelle and Yonkers High.
New Rochelle, the home team, was coached by Dan O'Brien, Yonkers by Les Beck. The gym was too crowded to hear the buzzer (终场哨). The game was well played. Yonkers was leading by one point as there were but 30 seconds left to play.
New Rochelle got the ball and tapped it in (投进篮筐) for what looked like victory. I took a look at the clock and saw that the game was over. I hadn't heard the final buzzer because of the noise. I checked with the other official, but he could not help me.
So I approached the timekeeper, a young man of 17 or so. He said, “Mr. Covino, the buzzer went off as the ball rolled off the rim (篮筐) before the final tap-in was made.”
I was in a dilemma about whether to tell Coach O'Brien the sad news. “Dan,” I said, “time ran out before the final basket was tapped in. Yonkers won the game.”
His face clouded_over. The young timekeeper came up. He said, “I'm sorry, Dad. The time ran out before the final basket.”
Suddenly, like the sun coming out from behind a cloud, Coach O'Brien's face lit up. He said, “That's okay, Joe. You did what you had to do. I'm proud of you.” Turning to me, he said, “Al, I want you to meet my son, Joe.”
The two of them then walked off the court together, the coach's arm around his son's shoulder.
17.Why did the author tell the truth in the end
A.To prove his original view. B.To learn more teaching skills.
C.To shame other coaches. D.To make the game fair.
18..What does the underlined phrase“clouded over”in Paragraph 6 probably mean
A.Turned gray. B.Looked sad. C.Became cold. D.Got relaxed.
19.Which of the following best describes O'Brien
A.Honest. B.Generous. C.Demanding. D.Creative.
20.What can we say about the match from Paragraph 2
A.It attracted a small audience. B.It failed to go on halfway.
C.It was competed closely. D.It was hosted on Yonkers' court.
