The Nazca Lines (纳斯卡线条) in Peru are huge pictures that were drawn into the ground
by digging shallow (浅的) lines into the earth. The pictures include birds, spiders, fish, etc.
Although these lines date back to between 500 BC and 500 AD, they were only discovered
in the 1930s. The reason is that the pictures only become clear when they are seen from the air. So
it was only when airplanes started flying over the area that people realized what they were.
How did these pictures get there How could these people have made such drawings
without the ability to fly Jim Woodman guessed that the Nazca people could have invented
simple hot-air balloons and used them to produce the art. Other people guessed the lines might be
the work of aliens. More and more speculations were offered and one of the great modern
mysteries was born.
However, some wooden sticks from the same age were found in the area. Some scientists
suggested that by placing the sticks in the correct positions and connecting them with long ropes
(绳子), the Nazca people could have made the pictures. Dr. Joe Nickell was so sure that this was
the answer. He decided to use this way to draw a huge picture on a piece of land. And it really
took him a few hours to produce a perfect picture and show how these pictures probably got there.

My best friend
My best friend is Paul from Sunshine Middle School. Paul has a square face with big, bright
eyes. He is tall and strong, and he always wears a smile. He is a very nice person. Paul is modest,
humorous and helpful. For example, when he won the basketball game, he thanked his teammates
instead of talking about himself. He often tells funny jokes that make us laugh. Also, he always
helps me with my math homework. His school starts at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. His
favourite subject is math. After class, he enjoys different activities like playing basketball and
joining the art club. Paul wants to be a math teacher in the future. I believe he will be excellent.
