School Sports: More than Just Fun
Sports are a big part of school life. Most students have regular P.E. classes, and there are usually many after-school clubs to join. But why are sports so important Well, not only do they keep you fit, they also have many other benefits.

American schools are quite different from those in China. In America, at the beginning of the term, students must select their subjects and teachers first.
Selecting is very important for your marks in America. So at the first term, don’t select too many subjects, or you’ll feel very nervous and tired. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, timetables, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must choose the teachers. Different teachers have different teaching methods. If the teacher is called “killer” by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him, because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low grades.
There is another thing after you select the subjects and the teachers. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. Each one is about $30-50. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library.

What time does your school start Do you wish you could get up later every morning You are not alone if your answer is “Yes”. In the US, many middle school students have the same wish.
In America, many schools start before 7:30 am. But that may change soon. A new law has been passed in California. According to the law, middle schools should not start before 8:00 am. The government hopes school children will have longer time in bed.
Many scientific studies show that teenagers are more active in the afternoon and in the evening. Simply telling them to go to bed earlier doesn’t work well. Most of them don’t get enough sleep because of bad sleeping habits and early school starting time. They need more sleep in the morning. Scientists suggest middle schools should start at 8:00 am or later. Students can get well ready to learn and they won’t fall asleep in class. They will pay more attention to classes. The change can help improve students’ grades.
While scientists are happy with the new law, many parents disagree with it. They won’t be able to send their children to school before they go to work. They also fear that later school starting time will lead to later ending time. As a result, their children will have less time to take part in after-school activities.

In many Chinese cities, primary and middle schools have made class breaks longer from 10 to 15 minutes since the fall semester (学期) started. The governments (政府) want students and teachers to do more outdoor activities.
Before, Chinese schools usually had 10-minute breaks. But it was not enough time for students, especially those in tall buildings, to go outside and play. Sometimes, schools didn’t let students leave the classroom during breaks because they were worried about safety.
Now, local education departments (部门) are trying to make school schedules better. They want students to have at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
In Beijing, primary schools’ morning and afternoon times haven’t changed. Middle schools end five minutes later.
In Wuxi, Jiangsu, schools have 15-minute breaks and one PE class every day. Students must do at least 100 minutes of exercise at school. The education officer said this helps students play outside and talk to each other. They want to give break time back to students.
A Qingdao primary school has many outdoor games like jump rope and hula hoop, and indoor puzzles during 15-minute breaks. In May, a fitness test showed that 47 percent of Qingdao students got “excellent” or “good” fitness grades, 10 percent more than before.

You may know the painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival by an artist called Zhang Zeduan in the Song Dynasty. Over 300 students from Nanjing worked together to recreate this famous painting.
The students’ art teacher Ma Min found a high-definition picture of the painting. She divided the painting into eight parts and gave each part to a different group of students. Then, Ma joined the parts together to form the finished painting, which is 0.84 metres wide and 20 metres long.
It took them about three months to finish it. They had to use their imagination to fill in details and make sure that one part matched another both in the form and in the painting style.
The students did a lot of research and made some interesting findings. Li Zixuan was asked to paint the busy streets along the river. She learnt that pillars (柱子) were used to create boundaries near the river. Shops were not allowed to open across this boundary. Otherwise, they would be punished with beatings.
“Historical inheritance (传承) and their own thinking are very important,” Ma said. “This is their own artistic creation.”

During the break times between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School often went to the toilet then back to class with no time for anything else. But now that is different. “I can have more time to rest and share interesting things with my classmates,” said the 14-year-old.
“Starting this autumn term, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have a longer break between two classes, from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, so students can spend more time outside.
To help children better enjoy break-time activities, some schools mixed break time with labor education by opening planting areas and animal breeding zones (饲养区).
“We have welcomed new friends to our school—some ducks and rabbits!” said Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. “During the breaks, some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. We get closer to nature, which is refreshing (令人耳目一新的) and relaxing.”
As the break time is longer, making sure everyone is safe (安全的) is also important. P. E. teachers in schools keep an eye on students playing on the ground.
“Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises to avoid (避免) running and falling down,” said one P. E. teacher.

In the UK, one of the funniest things about going to middle school is joining a club. Clubs usually have sport or cultural activities. There are clubs for such sports as baseball, basketball, football and so on. Clubs for cultural activities include arts, flower arrangement, tea culture and music bands. These club members work hard on their skills.
As soon as a new school year starts, clubs begin asking for new members. They put up posters around the school and try to persuade (说服) new students to join. For students who have just entered the school, so many choices can be difficult to choose. So a few days after they come to the new school, different clubs hold a meeting to explain (解释) their activities and aims.
Clubs always come up with interesting ways of getting new students to join. For example, the art clubs hold an exhibition of works by club members, while the music bands hold a concert. The eighth and ninth graders spend a lot of time every year trying to persuade new students to join.

Most high schools in the United States publish a yearbook once a year, usually in the spring. It is a record of the school year—a “book of memories” for the students.
Inside a yearbook is each student’s photo. The seniors are graduating soon, and their photos appear first. Next are the juniors. They are one year behind the seniors. Then come the second-year students. The last photos are the first-year students. The yearbook is not only about students. The teachers have photos, too.
The yearbook also has photos and descriptions of extracurricular activities. These are activities that students do after school, such as the chess club and Spanish club. There is even a yearbook club. Students in this club write, design and take photos all year for the yearbook.
In the yearbook, some students receive special titles. The seniors vote and choose the “class clown” (a funny student), the “most likely to succeed”(a student who got the best grades), and the “best dressed”(a student with a good fashion sense). There are also other awards.
Students usually sign each other’s yearbooks. This is especially important for the seniors because they are graduating. Students write notes to each other, such as, “We had a lot of fun,” or “I’ll never forget you.” They also write about the fun and funny experiences they shared in school together.
