I was so careful. I was nervous too. I had taken driving lessons and just 1 my driving test. I now had my license. I had to pick up my father from work and drive him to the train station. I must have looked at the speedometer (速度计) a hundred times on that first trip. But as I got close to my father’s work, I felt more and more 2 .

“No. You were going 65 kilometres an hour. You 9 drive that slow. You’ll cause an accident.”

It had been raining all day. In the morning I put on my blue silk dress, since I wanted to look beautiful, but it soon got terribly wet. A lot of people were standing outside Madame Tallien’s house. They were staring (注视) at the bright lights in the windows. Some of them were whispering angrily. I wasn’t surprised. The poor people couldn’t get enough to eat, but the leaders of the revolution (革命) lived like kings.
I opened the gate and went in but was stopped by a servant (仆人) at the door. “Did Madame
Tallien invite you ” he asked. I shook my head. “No uninvited lady can come here, unless a gentleman is with her. Those are Madame Tallien’s orders.” And he pushed me out into the street.
“I must ask a man to take me. If I don’t, I shall never get in,” I thought. Then here came a very tall man. He wore an army officer’s uniform, like Napoleon’s. I walked straight up to ask him for help. To my surprise, he was kind enough to agree, so I got in.
At last I saw Napoleon, who was sitting on a little sofa with a beautiful fair-haired woman in a pink silk dress. What surprised me was the great change in his appearance. The old trousers had gone. He was wearing a new uniform and looking white and ill.
“Has everyone a glass ” Madame Tallien asked, looking around at those in the beautiful hall. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve something important to tell you. Our dear Josephine has decided to marry again. She is going to marry one of France’s bravest officers — General Napoleon Bonaparte.”
“No!” A woman’s voice was heard, loud and sharp.
The wild cry filled the room. A terrible silence followed. Suddenly I recognized the voice — it was my own. And everyone was staring at me, but was too surprised to say anything. Then I took two steps forward and looked into the eyes of the woman who had taken Napoleon away from me. You could imagine how much I hated her. I threw my glass at her feet and she screamed with fear.
A moment later I was running down a dark wet street. I don’t know how I escaped from that house. Perhaps the servants were too surprised to stop me. I ran and ran till I reached a river.
“The Seine,” I thought. “Good! Here is the Seine.”
I walked slowly on to the bridge and looked over the side. Thousands of lights were dancing on the water. How gay it looked! And how lonely I felt!
Then I thought: “Tonight Napoleon will tell his mother and Joseph that he’s going to marry the woman.”
The thought was too terrible. I started to climb up the side of the bridge. But a strong had held my shoulder, and it pulled me back.

Just as music and TV, the video game industry has its big-name players. Tetris is such a form of entertainment that shows no signs of stopping up to now.
Tetris is played in what’s called a Matrix – an empty rectangle on a screen. Shapes (each is made up of four equal squares), called Tetriminos, fall into the Matrix. It’s the player’s job to place each Tetrimino so that it forms an unbroken horizontalline (水平线) with other shapes. A Tetromino can be spun or moved horizontally, but can’t be flipped (翻折). When a straight line is formed, the squares in the line disappear and the player will be rewarded. The game ends when the Tetriminos pile up and reach the top of the Matrix. It becomes difficult because the shapes fall faster the longer you play.
Tetris is one of the best-selling video games of all time. Have you ever wondered who invented it The game was created by a Russian computer engineer named Alexey Pajitnov in 1984. He was inspired (启发) by his favorite board game Pentominos and he designed the game just for fun.
The game became popular almost as soon as it hit the market. In 1996, Pajitnov set up the Tetris Company. When it started as a basic computer game, Tetris quickly spread to other platforms. It was one of the most often played games on Nintendo’s Game Boy.
Tetris was also the first video game played in space. In 1993, Russian Aleksandr Serebrov played the game on his Game Boy while he was on a rocket. Since then, Tetris has been one of the most popular games among kids and adults alike.
Tetris may be quite fun. ①In a 2009 study, kids played Tetris daily for about 30 minutes over
the course of three months. ②The game has also been used to help treat PTSD patients. ③This led to growth in parts of their brains. ④But it’s also been shown to have an active influence on the brain.
Many people enjoy playing Tetris, but some have a difficult time putting the game down. They spend so much time playing Tetris that they see Tetriminos falling in their dreams. Some even report hallucinations (幻觉). This is called the “Tetris Effect”. Since it has certain side effect, just make sure you play with adults’ allowance!
According to the passage, which of the following can be an S-Tetrimino
B. C. D.
Which of the following shows the right order of Paragraph 6
A. ④①③② B. ④②③① C. ②④①③ D. ②①④③
What can we learn about Tetris
It became the popular hand-held game after it was taken into space in 1993.
It will forever be a part of the entertainment landscape just as music and TV.
It has been around for years, and seems to keep the quality it’s had since day one.
It is a video game that players can control the shapes and guide them into place easily.

Frightened passengers trapped in flooded subway cars in Zhengzhou, China. Water pouring down stairways into the London Underground. A woman walking through dirty, deep water to reach a New York City subway station.
Subway systems around the world are fighting with terrible weather brought on by climate (气候) change. Some networks, such as London’s or New York’s, were designed and built starting more than a century ago. At the same time, the crisis (危机) in China shows that even some of the world’s newest systems (Zhengzhou’s system isn’t even 10 years old) can also be overwhelmed (压倒).
“It’s terrible,” said Sarah Kaufman, director of the Rudin Center for Transportation at New York University. “The challenge is, how can we get ready for the next storm, which was supposed to be 100 years away,” she said, “but could happen tomorrow ”
Just days before the China subway crisis, floods in Germany killed more than 160 people. As Robert E. Paaswell, a professor at City College of New York, put it: “Subways are going to flood. They’re going to flood because they are below ground.”
With more terrible flooding down the line, protecting subways all of the time will be impossible. Instead, money is needed in buses and bike lanes (车道) that can serve in other ways of public transportation when subways are flooded.
Some researchers question why public transportation needs to be underground in the first place and say that public transportation should reclaim (重新占领) the street.“We have this habit from the last century to give so much of the space above ground to cars,” he said. “But one bus lane carries more people than three lanes of cars.” said Bernardo Baranda Sepúlveda, a Mexico City-based researcher at the Institute for Transport Development.
Terrible Climate Could Overwhelm Subway Systems
Facts of some subway systems all over the world China: Terrified passengers were trapped in flooded subway cars. Britain: Water rushed down stairways into the London Underground. America: A woman walked through dirty, waist-deep water to reach a subway platform. Germany: Floods made 1 160 people lose their lives.
Not only old subway systems but also these new ones failed to fight with terrible weather 2 by climate change.
3 of Different people Sarah: It is 4 possible for subway systems to be overwhelmed by the next storm. Robert: Subways are below ground so they’re going to flood. Bernardo: We should give more available space above ground to buses than to cars. The writer: Buses and bike lanes that can serve in other ways of public transportation in floods are 5 quite a lot of money.

According to several recent surveys, some people fear public speaking more than anything else. Luckily, this fear can be overcome (克服) with two simple methods: practice and using positive (正面的) energy from the audience.
Practising for a speech is essential. After the task of writing the speech is complete, speakers must practise, practise, practise. The more times they practise the speech, the more comfortable they will discuss the topic. Using objects such as mirrors or video recordings as they practise can show speakers what they look and sound like to the audience. Video is particularly helpful as it can be watched many times, with the presenters focusing (集中) on one part at a time.
Another way of solving public speaking fears is using the audience’s positive energy. Speakers
need to remember that the audience want them to succeed. Something as basic as a small nod or a smile from a member of the audience should give confidence to the presenters behind the podium (讲台). While it is easy for nervous speakers to focus only on getting through the presentation, using the audience’s good will helps much in making a speech better.
All in all, these two strategies are sure to help with fear of public speaking. With proper practice and audience empathy (共鸣), it is possible to overcome the fear of public speaking and deliver a successful speech. So there is no need to fear public speaking any more.
Methods of 1 with public speaking fear
Practice ※Practicing is essential. ※Speakers must 2 practising after the task of writing is finished. ※Objects like mirrors and video recordings may be useful. For example, video is of 3 as it can be watched again and again.
Positive energy from the audience ※Speakers are 4 to be successful by the audience. ※A small nod or a smile can give speakers confidence, and make the speech much better.
Conclusion ※In a word, with proper practice and audience empathy, it is 5 to be afraid of speaking in public.
