According to Chinese history, lanterns were first made by people in the Western Han Dynasty, which is more then 2,000 years ago. Later in the Eastern Han Dynasty, people made lanterns with paper. Of course, other materials were also used for making lanterns, such as bamboo, wood and silk.
At first, people hung lanterns in front of their doors to drive away evil spirits. Soon lanterns started to play an important role in celebrations. Nowadays, lanterns, one of the forms of traditional art, have become a symbol of Chinese culture.
