Feifei Li's journey from a teenager in China to a leading figure in artificial intelligence is nothing short of remarkable.
Born in Beijing in 1976, Li grew up in Chengdu. Her life took a dramatic turn when her family moved to America. Initially, the family didn't speak English, so the burden of translation fell on Li. She credited kind teachers at her new high school for helping her overcome challenges, as she developed language skills and regained her academic excellence. Outside school, she worked tirelessly in low－paying jobs to support her family. During this period, she felt like an outsider with few friends, suffering from isolation(孤独).
Despite these hardships, she was accepted into Princeton to study physics. In 1999, Li graduated with honors, before going on to complete her Ph.D. and eventually joining Princeton's computer science department as an assistant professor.
At Princeton, Li began to pioneer ImageNet, a large－scale image database in visual object recognition software. Frustrated by her peers' inefficient approach of training computers to recognize one image at a time, she introduced computers to a vast number of objects based on children's visual learning methods. This led to the creation of ImageNet, which involved a massive labeling effort for over three million images. Instead of getting support within the Princeton department,
she outsourced(外包) the task to the Internet, using an Amazon's program to parcel the job out to remote workers around the globe. Before long ImageNet was completed, and it has subsequently had an enormous impact on the development of artificial intelligence. The database has now grown to over fourteen million images, and is a fundamental part of countless AI applications, like self－driving car technology.
Beyond her technical contributions, Li is a faithful advocate for moral AI development. She founded the Human－Centered AI Institute to advance AI research that improves the human condition. Moreover, Li's influence extends to promoting diversity in AI, through initiatives like AI4ALL, which educates historically excluded talents in the field. Her devotion to AI development earns her the name of “the Godmother of AI”．

Johnson, who likes to look up at the sky, is a volunteer advocate for DarkSky, a movement aimed at reducing light pollution and promoting responsible outdoor lighting. DarkSky is active in more than 70 countries.
Light pollution can be disastrous for wildlife and particularly for migrating(迁徙的) birds. Many migratory birds are easy to be drawn to light. Once in a big city with brightly lit buildings, birds have trouble finding their way out again.

Researchers from the University of Bradford announced they had discovered about 100 stones covering several acres thought to have been built around 4，500 years ago.① The Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project discovered the monument, which is near Durrington Walls, also known as “superhenge”. “In the east, up to 30 stones have survived below the bank，” he said. “The extraordinary scale and detail of the evidence produced by the Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project, which the new discoveries at Durrington Walls exemplify, is greatly changing our understanding of Stonehenge and the world around it③，” Neubauer added.

Ancient builders across the world created structures that are still standing today, thousands of years later. Roman builders built thick concrete sea barriers against waves. Mayan builders created great sculptures, and Chinese builders constructed walls against foreign enemies.
A growing number of scientists have been studying materials since a long time ago. They are breaking apart pieces of buildings and reading historical texts, hoping to learn how they have stood for thousands of years. The research has turned up a surprising list of materials that were mixed into old buildings. They include tree bark, volcanic ash, rice and beer. These unexpected materials can have the ability to get stronger over time. Figuring out how to copy these features can have real impacts today. While some of our modern concrete has the strength to hold up very tall buildings and heavy structures, it cannot compete with the durability of these ancient materials.
Many scientists have turned to the Romans. Starting around 200 BC, the Roman Empire was building concrete structures that have stood the test of time. Even in places where seawater has been hitting structures for ages, you will find concrete basically the way it was when it was poured 2，000 years ago. They think they have found an important reason why some Roman concrete has held up structures for thousands of years. That the ancient materials have an unusual power to restore themselves and “cure” cracks when they form is the most shocking for them. Exactly how is not yet clear, but scientists are starting to find the reasons.
Today's builders cannot just copy the ancient processes. Even though Roman concrete lasted a long time, it couldn't hold up heavy buildings. Instead, researchers are trying to take some of the ancient materials and add them into modern mixes. People don't need to make things last quite as long as the Romans did. If we add 50 or 100 years to concrete's lifespan, we'll surely require less pulling down, less maintenance and less material in the long run.

The “Father of the National Park System”， John Muir was an influential writer, naturalist, and environmentalist during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1838 in Dunbar, Scotland, he moved to the United States with his family and was attracted by the land. He was a prize－winning inventor, but it's his love for wild places and absolute devotion to protecting them that we remember him for.
As a young man, he explored the North American continent by foot, walking thousands of miles until he eventually settled in California. There, he fell in love with Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. His article series, Studies in the Sierra, put his name on the map and launched a prolific writing career, with over 300 articles and 10 books published. A true mountain man, he encouraged everyone to “climb the mountains and get their good tidings”．
His writings inspired presidents, congressmen, and average citizens to care about nature. In 1890, due in large part to a series of articles he published in Century magazine, the US Congress created Yosemite National Park. Muir was also involved in the creation of the Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon National Parks, thus earning his title.
But his work didn't stop there: in 1892, Muir and his supporters founded the Sierra Club to “do something for wildness and make the mountains glad”. In 1901, he published the book Our National Parks and caught the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, who visited him at Yosemite. During that visit, they laid the foundation for Roosevelt's groundbreaking protection programs.
Muir died in 1914, but his memory lives on, continuing to inspire new generations of environmentalists everywhere.

A[2025三明期末]
An incredibly adaptive species of coral discovered off the coast of Goolboddi Island in Northeast Australia has weathered hundreds of years of coral bleaching(白化) and survived till now. What can this teach scientists about preservation
At 34 feet wide, this coral is roughly the size of a carousel. Its incredible width is a result of its hard skeleton, which is made of calcium carbonate from the surrounding seawater. Nicknamed Muga dhambi, or “big coral”， it stands over 16 feet tall, making Muga dhambi the tallest coral in the Great Barrier Reef. This record－breaking coral was discovered by local citizens.
Based on the coral's size and growth rate, scientists have calculated its lifetime is about 421－438 years, meaning this ancient coral has survived as many as 80 cyclones and weathered 99 coral bleaching events. It has survived through centuries of low tides and outlived many invasive(入侵的) species.
It's extremely inspiring to know that these things like Muga dhambi exist, and have survived for a long time. The colony is in fairly good health with 70% of it consisting of live coral. Even as more coral cover is lost due to climate change, there is hope that adaptive species like Muga dhambi will continue to survive. Ancient colonies like Muga dhambi offer scientists a rare opportunity to learn more about reef conditions as long as these massive corals continue to grow.
Hopefully it helps to provide a new sense of hope for the future. There are many unexplored corners of the Great Barrier Reef, so it is possible that there are larger coral colonies waiting to be documented by local citizen scientists someday.

The beautiful skill of leaf－vein embroidery(叶脉绣) in Tongren City, Guizhou Province, has made Guizhou embroidery one of the main types of embroidery in China.
Leaf－vein embroidery dates back to the Song Dynasty(960－1279) and has been used to share messages among various ethnic groups in southwestern China.
Yang Li, a master of this craft, has combined traditional embroidery styles from the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in her works on leaves, mixing traditional design with modern techniques. Leaf－vein embroidery holds high value as a collectible art due to its complex process, which includes choosing and drying the leaves, then creating and embroidering the patterns.
Yang noted that in the past decade, only around 20 people in Tongren have been able to fully complete the whole leaf－embroidery process on their own. Because of the long, hard work involved and the small number of high－quality pieces made, it's challenging to keep this traditional skill alive. “I have introduced this style to universities, communities and villages and chosen skilled embroiderers to learn leaf－vein embroidery, but very few have kept going，” Yang said.
In 2011, she opened a processing centre, creating jobs for more than 500 women, including women from villages and people with disabilities. As a result, almost every embroiderer now has a collection of handmade items that could fill a museum. “I feel a duty and a sense of urgency. In my lifetime, I must improve and pass on this craft，” she said. In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou Embroidery Intangible Cultural Heritage Industry Base and has since used social media to share leaf－vein embroidery through short videos with her student, Yang Xinyu.
“Leaf－vein embroidery is a treasure，” said Yang Xinyu. “As a young person inspired by my teacher Yang Li, I am committed to carrying on this craft and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to continue its legacy.”

Asia's architectural treasures, from a Buddhist monastery in Afghanistan to an ancient city in China, are under threat due to economic development, poor technical resources, war and tourism, according to experts.
The Global Heritage Fund named 10 sites facing the loss and destruction impossible to recover.① “These 10 sites represent only a small part of the endangered treasures across Asia and the rest of the developing world，” Jeff Morgan, executive director of the fund, said.

Experts said that global architectural preservation efforts are poorly balanced and targeted, with the UN cultural body UNESCO focusing almost entirely on sites in already rich European countries, rather than in places like Latin America or Asia.③ More than 80 percent of UNESCO World Heritage Sites are located in the 10 richest states, the Global Heritage Fund said.
