Perhaps because my new friend was a retired nurse, she knew people and could sense the anxiety in my voice. In response to her question, I began to cry again. “I just roughly pushed my father out of his wheelchair like a sack of potatoes out in front of the elevator in the reception area of the hospital,” I said.
“Well, at least you were in the right place for that,” she said.
My tears changed to laughter.
“You know, Deb, you’re lucky nothing worse happened,” she said.
“What do you mean ” I asked.
“Well, you’re running your family business, taking care of a family, looking after a mother who has dementia (痴呆), shuttling her and your father, back and forth from medical appointments, and managing their affairs and your own. Don’t you think that’s a lot And what are you doing for you ”
“There’s no way I have time for me,” I said.
“Deb, there’s no way you don’t have time for you. Think of yourself as being in a plane, and it’s going down. You have a lot of people depending on you, but the one person who must come first to get you through all this is you. Put on your oxygen mask first, Deb, before you help others,” she said.
