The Jones-Baldwin family wasn’t always so big. When Keia Jones married her husband Richardo Baldwin in 2010, she had just one child: a 2-year-old daughter, Zariyah from a previous relationship. Little did they know, though, that their family would eventually add not one, not two, but three more children to the Jones-Baldwin family, thanks to the gift of adoption.
First came 11-year-old Karleigh, in 2014. She and Zariyah became close friends at school, but due to some financial difficulties, Keia says Karleigh’s mother fell on hard times and was unable to properly care for her. In 2017, the couple adopted a lovely 3-year-old named Ayden. That same year, their fourth child came into their lives unexpectedly.
“Unlike our three other black kids, the baby, named Princeton, is white,” Keia recalls. Princeton was born seriously ill and stayed in hospital several weeks after his birth. “They needed someone to do skin-to-skin with him,” says Keia, “and chose me for the task, and I was more than willing to take on the job.”
The experience of being black parents raising a white son has certainly caused them some trouble. There are always lots of suspicious stares and unfavorable comments wherever they go. Someone even called the police and said the baby was stolen by the couple. Once the family were enjoying themselves on the beach in Florida when the police were called in. It was not until Keia showed the police their ID cards that they were convinced that the baby was indeed their adopted son.
When asked why they would make so much effort to adopt the kids, Keia smiled. “It’s all love,” she said.“Both my husband and I love kids. We just can’t stand seeing kids suffering. Thank goodness, the lovely kids, who are from different cultures and of different ages, are all growing up healthily and happily under the same roof. Over the years, they have brought us so much joy! Our hearts are so full and so grateful.”

In the past years the popularity of rock climbing has greatly increased, and so has the number of injuries. It has been estimated that rock climbing is now enjoyed by more than 9 million people in the US each year. Study findings revealed a 65 percent increase in the number of patients that were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbing-related injuries between 2001 and 2021.
The study, published in the online issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that about 40,000 patients were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbing-related injuries between 2001 and 2021. The most common types of rock climbing-related injuries were fractures (骨折) and sprains (扭伤). The ankle was the most common body part to be injured (40 percent). Climbers in the study ranged in age from 2 to 74, with an average age of 26. The study also found that women took up a quarter of the injuries.
Falls were the primary reason for injury with over three-quarters of the injuries occurring as the result of a fall. The severity of fall-related injuries had a lot to do with the height of the fall. Patients who were injured after falling from a height over 20 feet were 10 times more likely to be treated than patients who were injured falling from 20 feet or lower.
“We found that the climbers who fell from heights higher than 20 feet took up 70 percent of the patients treated for a rock climbing-related injury,” explained the study author Lara McKenzie, PhD, director at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Hospital. “This trend, combined with the fact that rock climbers have a higher hospitalization rate than other sports and recreational injuries, certifies the need to increase injury prevention efforts for climbers.”
28. How many women climbers were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbing-related injuries between 2001 and 2021
A. About 40,000. B. About 30,000.

29. The severity of climbers’ fall-related injures is mainly related to _______.
A. the climber’s health conditions B. the climber’s age
C. the height of the fall D. the climber’s climbing experience
30. What can we know from the passage
A. The number of injuries caused by rock climbing has greatly increased in the past years.
B. The knee was the most common body part to be injured for a climber.
C. The average of climbers in the study was 36.
D. Climbers who fell from heights lower than 20 feet took up 70 percent of the patients treated.
31. What does the underlined word “certifies” in the last paragraph mean
A. Download. B. Confirm. C. Prevent. D. Imagine.

Astronauts on the International Space Station will soon test a new oven(烤箱) for making chocolate chip cookies. A spaceship carrying the cooking equipment and other supplies was launched on Saturday from the Wallops Flight Facility in the United States. The shipment, weighing 3,700 kilograms, reached the space station on Monday. The goal is to explore the possibility of making freshly baked cookies for space travelers.
American company Nanoracks designed and built the oven and helped with organizing the flight to the space station. Hilton DoubleTree hotels supplied the cookie dough(生面团) the astronauts will use.
In the past, space station crews have created their own pizzas using a thin, flat piece of bread known as flatbread. Astronauts have tried other creative ways to make food, such as creating salads from vegetables grown in the space station. Results have been mixed.
The cookie baking will be a slow process. The oven can heat just one cookie at a time. The test could take weeks before the astronauts have chance to try out freshly baked cookies.
Five unbaked cookies have been in a space station freezer for several weeks. Each is in its own individual clear bag made out of silicone. The oven can heat foods to temperatures as high as 177 degrees Celsius. That is twice the temperature of the U.S.and Russian food warmers on the space station. The oven uses electric heating elements.
Mary Murphy is with Nanoracks. Murphy says she expects a baking time of 15 to 20 minutes for each cookie when the oven is heated to about 163 degrees Celsius. She adds that the smell of baking cookies should fill the space station each time a cookie comes out of the oven.
The oven's first use will be the real test. Without the force of gravity, the astronauts do not know exactly how the cookie will look. Three of the space-baked cookies are to be returned to Earth for testing.
32.Which of the following can best describe the new oven test
A.Time-consuming. B. Energy-saving. C. Meaningless. D. Successful.
33.What's the advantage of the new oven over the Russian food warmer
A. It heats up much faster. B. It's more convenient to use.
C. It has a larger cooking space. D. It can heat up to a higher temperature.
34.What will make the cookie's appearance in the new oven uncertain
A. The baking time B. The heating method.
C. The absence of gravity D. The speed of temperature rise.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Cooking Equipment in Space Station
B.Cookies Coming from the International Space Station
C.Creative Ways Astronauts Make Food in Space Station
D.A New Oven to Be Tested to Make Cookies in Space Station

We all have relationships. We have relatives, classmates, neighbors and probably some friends.
36 They are unsatisfying because they lack real strength, and they lack real strength because they lack real depth. I’d like to show you how to build stronger relationships and make your social life a lot more meaningful.
Meet more people.
You go out a lot, you meet a lot of new people and you keep widening your social circle. Thus, you’re much more likely to meet people you match up well with. 37
Talk about the things that matter to you.
38 If they believe and care about the same things, they’ll eagerly let you know. So you’ll find common ground and you’ll feel more connected.
39
Many people try to come off as perfect. However, by hiding your imperfections, what you do succeed in is appearing cold. Humans connect with other humans; not with ideals(完美的人). Keep this in mind. Don’t be afraid to let your weakness and your humanity show. This is what takes a relationship to the next level.
Be there for others.
Connections between people grow stronger, if they can depend on each other for support when it’s needed. 40 Your support will help them practically, and it will comfort them spiritually.
A. Express weakness.
B. Be more confident.
C. But it’s hard for everyone to connect with you.
D. Don’t care whether it means a few kind words or several great actions.
E. These people can probably become your good friends, dependable partners, etc.
F. However, for a large percentage of us, many of these relationships are simply not satisfying.

Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench (板凳) in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant (傲慢的) boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar (乞丐) ” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet (钱包). He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s, because he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

首先,我们可以设定每天的屏幕使用时间限制,以减少分心。此外,参加诸如体育、阅读或社团活动等线下活动有助于减少对手机的依赖。
让我们共同努力,营造一个让科技成为成长工具的校园环境。

At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad. He stared at the wallet, with a mix of anger and temptation(n.诱惑) in his heart. “This could teach him a lesson about being arrogant(adj.傲慢的;自大的).” he whispered(whisper v.低语). But as he thought about it more, he remembered his parents’ teachings about honesty. “I can be a better person by doing the right thing.” he decided. With a determined look, he walked up to Fahad. “Here’s your wallet,” he said firmly(adv.坚定的).
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving back my wallet ” Asad answered, “Honesty matters more to me. I know you might not respect me, but I respect myself enough to do the right thing.” Fahad was taken aback.(sb be taken aback某人大吃一惊) For the first time, he saw the error(n.错误) of his ways. “I was wrong. I’m sorry,” he said sheepishly(n.羞怯的). From then on, Fahad’s attitude transformed (transform v.改变) completely and they became good friends. Asad’s honesty not only won him a friend but also a new-found respect in the class.
