Comparative and superlative adjectives
When we compare two people or things, we can use the comparative form of the adjective. When we compare more than two people or things, we can use the superlative form of the adjective.
Read the dialogue between Su Mei and Su Wen. Pay attention to the words in bold.
Su Mei: Oh, what's this
Su Wen: It's a computer from the 1940s. You know what The first computers
were bigger than cars. Nowadays, computers are much smaller and better.
Su Mei: I see. Besides size, what else is different
Su Wen: Computers today are much faster than before.
Su Mei: That must be true. Some computers are even smarter than human
beings.
Su Wen: No, I don't think so. I think human beings are the smartest. After all,
we invented computers.

To form comparative adjectives, we often add -er to an adjective with one or two syllables and use more with adjectives of three or more syllables.
We often use than after comparative adjectives.
To form superlative adjectives, we often add - est to an adjective with one or two syllables and use most with adjectives of three or more syllables.
We usually use the before superlative adjectives.
构成 比较级形式 例词
单音节形容词 大多数单音节形容词 + -er high → higher
small → smaller
以-e结尾 + -r large → larger
wide → wider
一个元音 + 一个辅音 双写辅音字母，再加-er big → bigger
hot → hotter
双音节形容词 以-y或-ly结尾 去掉y，再加-ier happy → happier
silly → sillier
以非重读元音、/l/或/R(r)/结尾 + -er(-r) clever → cleverer
simple → simpler
以-ful，-less，-ed，-ing结尾 more + 形容词原级 careful→ more careful
boring → more boring
多音节 形容词 含三个或三个以上音节 more + 形容词原级 difficult →more difficult

形容词比较级/最高级的构成
1.表示两者之间的选择,
可用“Which/Who … + 比较，…or… ”.

2. 表示两者之间的比较，通常用连词 than 引导，表示“更····一些”．
He runs faster than she.
3. much/far/a lot, even, still, a little/a bit … 修饰比较级,表示程度.
He runs much faster than she.
4. “比较级+and+比较级”表示“越来越……”
He becomes healthier and healthier.
Shanghai is becoming more and more modern.
形容词比较级的用法
5. “the+比较级 , the + 比较级”表示“ 越…, 越 …”
The more you exercise, the healthier you will be.
6. 表示不及另一方时，用“less+原级+than…” (双音节和多音节词)
He is healthier than she. =She is less healthy than he.
最高级的用法
1.表示三者或三者以上比较,可用
“Which/Who …”+最高级,…,…or … ”表示.
Who is the tallest, Tom , Mike , or Jack
2. 最高级+of/among (同类比较)
in… (范围比较)
Tom is the tallest of the three.
Tom runs (the) fastest in our class.
3. 序数词修饰最高级
Mike is the second tallest student in our class.
4.one of +形容词最高级+名词复数表示“最… 之一”
Jack is one of the tallest students in our class.
It is one of the widest roads in our town.
比较级形式表最高级含义。（比较双方属于同一范围内）
a. 比较级＋than＋any other＋单数名词+范围
He is taller than any other boy in his class.
b. 比较级 ＋ than＋the other＋复数名词+范围
比较级 ＋ than＋the rest of ＋ 复数名词+范围
比较级 ＋ than＋any of the other+复数名词+范围
She goes to school earlier than the other girls in her class.
China is larger than any of the other countries in Asia.
c. 比较级 + than + anything/anyone else
George did more work than anyone else.
Tom cared more for money than for anything else 汤姆最喜欢钱。
