动词不定式是一种活跃的非谓语动词。它在句中可起到名词、形容词或副词的作用,作主语、宾语、定语、状语或宾语补足语。
动词不定式的形式是“to+动词原形”,但to有时要省略。
动词不定式在具体运用时,用不用to,取决于谓语动词的用法。
动词不定式没有人称和数的变化,在句子中不能单独做谓语。

动词不定式的用法(一)
动词不定式作宾语
动词不定式在句子中充当谓语动词的宾语,这类谓语动词常见的有:
want(想要)、hope/wish(希望)、begin/start开始)、decide(决定)learn(学习,学会)、agree(同意)、expect(期待预料 )、help(帮
助)(to可以省略)、need(需要)、plan(计划)、prepare(准备)、refuse(拒绝)、offer(主动提出)等。

有些动词后既可以跟动词不定式,又可以跟动名词,但是它们表示的含义不同。

动词不定式作目的状语
我们可以用动词不定式表示某一动作或状态的目的。动词不定式作目的状语时,可放在句首,也可放在句尾,放在句首时常用逗号隔开。为了使表达更加清楚或对目的加以强调,还可用in order to。
We should reduce waste in order to protect the environment.
为了保护环境,我们应该减少浪费。
In order to pass the exam, she reviews her lessons every night.
为了通过考试,她每晚都复习功课。

动词不定式作宾语补足语
(1)在ask、tell、order、invite、get、allow、wish、want、encourage、advise、warn、love、hate等动词之后,常用带to的动词不定式作宾语补足语。即构成ask/tell/order/invite/...sb to do sth结构,其否定形式为ask/tell/order/invite/...sb not to do sth。
The teacher wants us to study hard.
老师想要我们努力学习。
The teacher tells the students not to talk in class.老师告诉学生们不要在课堂上讲话。
