The Amazing Cactus
Cacti are special plants that mainly grow in deserts. Unlike most plants, they have thick stems instead of large leaves. These stems can store water, which is very important for living in dry places.
Cacti come in many shapes and sizes. Some are as small as a tennis ball, while others can grow up to 20 meters tall. Their flowers are usually bright—pink, yellow, or red—and bloom for a short time each year.
Why don’t cacti need much water One reason is their spines. Spines are like sharp needles that grow on the stems. They stop animals from eating the cactus and also reduce water loss by shading the plant.
People in desert areas use cacti in different ways. Some eat the fruit of certain cacti, which is sweet and juicy. Others use the stems to make medicine. But cacti are also in danger because of overcollecting and habitat loss.

The Amazing Journey of Arctic Terns
Arctic terns are small birds with a big adventure. Every year, they travel from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back—this is the longest migration of any animal on Earth. The round trip can be over 70,000 kilometers!
Why do they make such a long journey In summer, the Arctic is full of daylight, and there are plenty of insects for them to eat. They lay their eggs there. When winter comes, the Arctic gets dark and cold, so the terns fly south to the Antarctic, where it is summer and food is still easy to find.
The journey is not easy. They must fly over oceans and deserts, facing strong winds and hungry predators. But Arctic terns are smart. They follow the sun and stars to find their way. They also fly in groups to stay safe.
Scientists are amazed by these birds. Their bodies are built for long flights—they have strong wings and light bones. Even young terns can make the journey without their parents guiding them. This amazing ability has helped them survive for millions of years.

Rainforests (热带雨林) are some of the most amazing places on Earth. They cover only about 6% of the world’s land, but are home to more than half of all living things. These dense forests are full of life, from tiny insects to large animals, and from small plants to tall trees.
The rainforest has different layers. The top layer is called the emergent layer, where the tallest trees reach up to 70 meters. Below that is the canopy, a thick layer of leaves and branches that stops most sunlight from reaching the layers below. Next is the understory, with smaller trees and bushes. The bottom layer is the forest floor, where only a little sunlight gets through.
Many rainforest animals have special skills to live in their layers. For example, sloths hang from the canopy branches. Their long claws help them stay there, and their slow movement helps them save energy. Toucans have big beaks to reach fruit on thin branches that can’t hold their weight. On the forest floor, jaguars use their spots to hide in the shadows while hunting.
Rainforests are important for the whole world. They take in carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and give out oxygen (氧气), which helps keep the air clean. They also help control the world’s weather. But rainforests are in danger. Every year, large areas are cut down for wood or to make space for farms. This destroys the homes of many animals and plants, and may even change the world’s climate.

People hate mosquitoes (蚊子) because of their blood-sucking tendencies (吸血倾向). Scientists, too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been finding ways to keep them away.
A team of scientists in the US looked into different kinds of soap. They invited volunteers to test how four different soap flavors (香味) attract mosquitoes.
After some experiments, the scientists found several chemicals (化学物质) in the soap that can influence the mosquitoes’ “choice of food”. Two chemicals, one with the smell of coconut and another with the smell of flowers, can keep mosquitoes away.
The team also found that it’s not just the chemicals that influence mosquitoes, it’s the combination of chemicals and each person’s smell. For example, people who attract mosquitoes can be more attractive to them after using one type of soap. They can also repel (击退) mosquitoes by using another kind of soap.
How mosquitoes manage to find humans also made scientists interested. According to a new study, scientists built a “canteen” for hundreds of mosquitoes. In the 20-by-20-meter facility, there were six pads that had the smell of different humans.
They found that mosquitoes can track smells up to 60 meters. Also, mosquitoes are most attracted to a kind of chemical called carboxylic acid (羧酸), which is usually produced by bacteria (细菌) on human skin. The smell of one pad wasn’t attractive to mosquitoes, and scientists believed it was because he is a vegetarian (素食者).
By analyzing the chemicals that either attract or repel mosquitoes, scientists are able to improve mosquito repellent. With more studies, scientists believe changing a person’s diet could one day make them mosquito-proof. This is especially good for regions where mosquitoes carry diseases, such as malaria (疟疾).

Have you ever seen chipmunks (花栗鼠) They look very much like squirrels (松鼠), but they spend much of their time on the ground. People name this animal chipmunk because they make the special chip-chip sound. There are as many as 25 kinds of chipmunks, and most live in North America. A wild chipmunk can live for 2 to 5 years.
Chipmunks are very small, and they enjoy living alone. When they are two months old, they leave their mothers to live by themselves. They build their own homes and start collecting food there all by themselves. They do not like living or making friends with other chipmunks much.
Unlike other hibernating (冬眠的) animals, chipmunks do not live on body fats during winters. They collect and keep food during summers and eat it during winters. In winter, they don’t sleep all the way through the winter. They are light sleepers and wake up every few days to eat food.
Chipmunks may not be as popular as pet dogs or pet cats, but they can be good ones. They can feed on many things from vegetables and fruits to nuts (坚果) and bird eggs. On 6 November, 2024, the world’s first mangrove (红树) centre was officially set up in Shenzhen. It can protect mangroves in the world.
Mangroves usually grow at river mouths and wetlands. They are called “coast guards (海岸卫士)” because they keep the soil together. This stops coasts from turning into deserts. Besides, they play an important role in slowing down global warming.
Therefore, more mangrove forests bring a better environment. In the last few years, the mangrove lands in the world have disappeared a lot. However, China’s mangroves see an increase. According to a study, China’s mangrove lands have risen from 22,000 hectares (公顷) in 2001 to 27,000 hectares today.
Futian Mangrove Park is in the heart of Shenzhen. It is an important place for birds to rest after flying for a long time. What’s more, the park shows the beauty of nature and teaches people how to protect the environment.

The Amazon Rainforest is the world’s biggest rainforest (雨林). It is in South America. It is so wide that it covers a little more than the half size of China! The Amazon River runs through the rainforest. It’s the world’s second longest river. The Amazon Rainforest covers much of Brazil. The green colour on the national flag of Brazil stands for the rainforest.
However, climate change and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can fix itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. According to a new study, many trees there may die, and the Amazon Rainforest may turn into hot, dry grassland in a few years.
Why is the Amazon “sick”
The Amazon Rainforest is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire.
Besides, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. All these kinds of activities have made about 17% of the rainforest disappear.

The Amazon Rainforest is like the lungs (肺) of our planet. The rich plants there take CO out of the air and make oxygen (氧气). They make more than 20% of the planet’s oxygen. If the Amazon Rainforest “dies”, there will be more CO , and our earth will become even hotter.
The Amazon Rainforest is also home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely just disappear.

Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it’s dark. Most of us go for our work and study in the daytime. We almost never see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much. Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there is always some type of artwork or story that includes an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children’s books, etc. So what makes owls so popular
Some bird researchers believe owls’ popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. In order to see clearly in the dark, owls have evolved (进化) to have large eyes. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical (圆筒状的). So owls cannot roll (翻转) their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost around on their necks.
Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided (不平衡)—the left ear is a little higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s whole face acts like a satellite dish (圆盘式卫星接收器) for sound waves. Their beaks (鸟喙) are very small so that they won’t get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as strange and wonderful animals. For a long time, people made up lots of myths (神话) about them. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some say owls are witches (女巫) in disguise (伪装). These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made them become more popular!

Every year, millions of birds are killed or hurt when they fly into buildings. Why does this happen 85 Birds are flying into windows and tall buildings that are all covered by glass.
Many birds fly from one place to another. Most of the time, they live in the wild, such as forests and wetlands. 86 They might see small trees and flowers inside a window and want to rest on these plants. The birds do not know there is glass between them and the plants. 87
Some birds fly at night. They use the moon and stars to help guide them in the right direction. Tall buildings with lights on at night can confuse (迷惑) the birds. 88 The birds see the light, but they cannot tell that the light is coming from inside a building. They fly toward the light and crash into a building. On many mornings, there might be several dead birds lying on the ground.
89 Many office buildings now turn off their lights at night. This helps reduce the number of birds that fly into buildings and it also helps save energy.

The Search-for-Lost-Birds list has come to public attention recently. On the list, it shows ten kinds of birds that have not been seen in the wild for at least fifteen years. The list is calling on people to search for the rarest birds on earth.
There could be several reasons for the long disappearances (消失) of the birds on the list. Maybe there have been no studies in areas where they live. Maybe people don’t know where or how to find them. Maybe there are changes to their natural homes because of human activities.
This year, four research teams are planning to find eight kinds of birds. If any of these lost birds are found, ways can be found to protect them and help their populations grow. This has happened with birds like the Madagascar pochard (马岛潜鸭). The number of this once-lost kind of bird is now growing more.
