【原文】May is the month that the United States celebrates Asian Americans and Pacific islanders. Anyone who lives in America and comes from the continent of Asia is celebrated this month. This includes people from China, India and even Russia. It also includes people from the Philippines, who are commonly referred to as the Pacific islanders. In the 1970s, a woman named Genie Joo wanted to create a week of honor. In 1977 the law was passed saying the first week of May would be the time. However, in 1990 George H. W. Bush made plans to turn the week of honor into a month. Two years later, the law was passed and it became official. Many towns with large populations of Asian Americans celebrate the festivals. There are even some events which are supported by governments. In many places where there are only small populations, schools and students focus some studies on eastern countries. Though I am not an Asian American, I have many friends who are. Many of them have shown me traditional foods and celebrations. It has inspired me to travel more.
