Starter Unit 1 Hello Section 2 Pronunciation
Content analysis
What
This unit centers on the sounds of the 26 English letters. In Activity 1, students listen to a recording while looking at pictures, then identify and name letters on a computer keyboard. Activity 2 involves grouping letters with identical vowel sounds (e.g., A, J, K share the sound /e /). Activity 3 introduces abbreviations formed by the initials of words, and students complete an image-text matching task to link these abbreviations with their meanings. Activity 4 encourages students to sing the classic Alphabet Song to learn or review letter sounds.
Why
Activity 1 uses the familiar computer keyboard to arouse interest, helping students associate letters with real-life tools. Activity 2 fosters phonemic awareness by demonstrating how letters share vowel sounds (e.g., B, C, D all have the sound /i /). Activity 3 aims to teach the meaning and pronunciation of abbreviations. Activity 4 makes learning enjoyable and memorable through music.
How
Employ listening, speaking, and singing to engage students actively, involving their eyes, ears, and voices. First, students identify letters on a keyboard to build basic familiarity. Then, they learn the sounds of all 26 letters and group them by shared vowel sounds (such as A, J, K) to grasp pronunciation patterns. Next, they match letter-based abbreviations to pictures and meanings, strengthening the connection between letters and real-life applications. Finally, they sing the Alphabet Song to enhance fun and participation in learning!
