Unit 1 You and Me Section 6 Reading Plus
Content analysis
This section focuses on three core strategies to help students build school friendships: overcoming shyness through initiating conversations and recalling names, asking thoughtful questions to express interest, and sharing personal stories to create emotional connections. It integrates social-emotional learning (SEL) goals—promoting confidence, active listening, and mutual understanding—while offering useful social interaction vocabulary and advice-giving language structures that enhance students’ communication abilities.
By presenting advice on how to make new friends at school, this section empowers students with practical social skills for forming friendships, addressing common challenges like shyness and passive communication. Through three pieces of advice and practical vocabulary, it guides students to recognize the importance of mutual understanding, confidence, and emotional intelligence in relationships. By encouraging active listening and self-expression, the text fosters inclusivity and empathy, reinforcing that successful social connections rely on both curiosity about others and a willingness to share oneself.
This text adopts a clear problem-solution structure, opening with a relatable question about making friends, followed by three actionable tips (initiating contact, active questioning, and self-sharing), and concluding with encouragement. The organization is logical and student-friendly, using sequencing markers (First, Second, Last) to scaffold understanding. The text also shows simple, conversational English (e.g., Hello! What’s your name ) to mirror real-life interactions. Overall, it balances instructional clarity with relatable scenarios, making it both practical for skill-building and accessible for learners.
