Step 1. Lead-in Lead Ss to talk about their school. Offer some useful words and expressions to help them. Have a free talk about their school with T. To activate the connection between students’ knowledge and experience with the teaching content of this lesson.
Step 2. Before-reading 1. Lead Ss to read the title “My Floating School” and the picture. Ask them some questions: Q1: What are they doing Q2: Where are they Q3: What’s the meaning of “floating” 2. Play a video to help Ss understand the floating school. 1. Read the title and observe the photo to make some predictions. Sa: They are having a class. Sb: They are on a boat. 2. Watch a video to know more about the floating school. To guide Ss to perceive the overall situation and understand the details.
Step 3. While-reading 1. Ask Ss to look through the passage quickly for the first time. Offer the questions to get the main idea. Q1: What’s the passage about Q2: How many paragraphs are there 2. Instruct Ss to read the first paragraph and ask them questions to get more information. Q1: What problems are the students in Bangladesh facing during the rainy season Q2: How do they solve this problem? 3. Ask Ss to read the second and third paragraphs and ask questions. Q1: What is the floating school Q2: How many teachers and classes does each boat have Q3: How does it work 4. Let Ss read the fourth paragraph and ask: How does Sadia Khatun feel about her school 1. Read the title, the first and the last sentences of each paragraph to get the main idea. Sa: It is about the writer’s floating school. Sb: Four paragraphs. 2. Read Para.1 carefully and answer the questions. Sa: It’s difficult to walk on some roads in the rainy season in Bangladesh. Sb: Students study on a “floating school”. 3. Read Paras. 2&3 carefully and answer the questions. Sa: It’s a “school bus” and classroom all in one. Sb: Each boat has one teacher and one class. Sc: It picks students up in the morning and takes them home in the evening. 4. Read Para.4 carefully and answer the question. Sa: She learns a lot at her school and has fun too. She loves her floating school. To guide students to deeply study the discourse, fully understand the content and deep meaning of the text. To help students gradually internalize language and cultural knowledge, and pay attention to timely penetration of reading strategies.
Step 4. Post-reading 1. Ask Ss to finish activity 1. 2. Let Ss work in groups to have a discussion. Q1: What can we learn from the story Q2: How is the floating school important to students in Bangladesh Q3: What difficulties might the floating school have 3. Play a video about the reason of study. T: Studying could change our life and country! Complete activity 1. 2. Discuss with their group members to understand better. Sa: We should cherish the chance to go to school. Sb: We should cherish the comfortable learning environment given by our country. … 3. Watch the video and think of the reason to study. To guide students to engage in independent thinking and group discussions, generate thinking collisions, and deeply interpret and understand the significance of "water schools" for Bangladeshi students. To promote the improvement of their cultural awareness and thinking quality.
Step 5. Homework 1. Make a list about the differences between your school and Sadia’s school. 2. Search on the Internet and try to find out more special schools around the world. Write a short passage about the one you’re most interested in. Complete the homework. To guide students to summarize classroom content and cultivate their ability to broaden their horizon.
