While-reading
Read the passage and find the words or expressions that caused the misunderstandings.
Last week, our forum asked if you had any funny or strange stories about using English. …
Have you ever misunderstood an English word or expression
Can you think of a Chinese expression that could confuse foreigners
Story 1: Frog in one’s throat
Maggie didn’t come to class “coz she had a frog in her throat”.
她吃了一只青蛙?
嗓子沙哑,说不出话
COZ = because
“frog in one’s throat” = a sore throat / voice problem
Why did the student think Maggie “ate a frog”
Story 2: First floor
In New York, asked for “shoe section”, was told “first floor” → went upstairs but found nothing.
British English:
first floor = 一楼上面
(相当于二楼)
American English:
first floor = 一楼
(ground floor)
How can the same word mean two different things in the UK and US
Story 3: Wicked
Pen pal said grandpa was "really wicked", and grandpa turned out to be very nice.
字面意思:邪恶的,坏的
俚语意思(informal slang):棒极了,酷,very good
Why did the student feel confused when hearing “wicked”
Story 4: Not bad
The British teacher corrected the composition to write "Not bad", and the students thought it was "not good".
英国人说“Not bad” = pretty good,相当于正面评价。
Why do you think the British teacher didn’t just say “very good”
Post- reading
Match the story with the type of misunderstanding:
(British English) the floor of a building above the one at ground level; (American English) the floor of a building at ground level
pretty good, better than you expected
unable to speak clearly for a short time because your throat is dry or blocked
morally wrong and intending to hurt people; (informal) very good, fantastic
teamwork
