一. 定义:在复合句中,由一个句子充当宾语,这个句子叫作宾语从句。本单元主要学习由that, whether / if引导的宾语从句。

(1)that:引导陈述句作宾语。
that只起连接作用,无意义,在从句中不充当成分,因此常可省略。

(2)if/whether:引导一般疑问句作宾语。
意为“是否”,在从句中不充当任何成分,但不可省略。
一般来说,在宾语从句中if与whether可以互换使用。但在特殊情况下,两者不能互换。
注意:只用whether,不用if引导的情况:
1) 在介词的后面
e.g. I’m thinking of whether we should go to see the film.
2) 与or not直接连用
e.g. I don’t know whether or not they can get there on time.
3) 位于动词不定式之前:whether to do
e.g. He doesn’t know whether to go or not.
【例句】
*I don’t know whether / if she will go to Beijing tomorrow.
*The boy didn’t believe that his cat died.
语序
that, whether / if 引导的宾语从句要用陈述句语序。

(3)特殊疑问词:引导特殊疑问句作宾语。
有各自的意义,在从句中充当相应的成分,不可省略。

时态
【例句】
* I know (that) Jack is a hard-working student.
* I know (that) he will take the exam.
宾语从句的时态一般受主句时态的影响。
(1)如果主句是一般现在时(或者一般将来时),宾语从句可根据句意使用适当的时态。
【例句】
*Linda didn’t say if her aunt was still with them.
(2)当主句是一般过去时,从句要用相应的过去时态。
从句的时态变化
一般过去时----- 一般过去时/过去完成时
一般将来时----- 过去将来时
现在进行时----- 过去进行时
现在完成时----- 过去完成时
