表 示 能 力
for abilities
can表示有能力做、知道如何做或能够发生，意为“能、会”
Tom can drive a car now.
汤姆现在会开车了。
could表示过去的能力
My grandfather could drive a car when he was very young.
我爷爷很年轻的时候就会开车了。

表 示 许可
for permission
请求许可：can和could都可以用，无时间上的差异，could的语气
比can更为委婉、客气或不确定.
*Can I have a look at your new computer
我可以看一下你的新电脑吗？
* Could I use your cell phone
我可以用一下你的手机吗？
给予许可: 表示给予许可时只用can，相当于may, 但不能用could
* You can play you cell phone after homework.
做完作业后你可以玩手机.
* You can't go home that late.
你不可以 那么晚回家。

表示征求对方的意见
for other’s advice
征求对方的意见时，常用“Could you...？/Can you... ”
只是“Could you....”比“Can you...？” 更有礼貌。
*Can you help me carry this box 你能帮我扛一下这个箱子吗？
*Could you help me carry this box 你能不能帮我扛一下这个箱子？

表示可能性
for possibilites
表示可能性
在肯定句中，表示理论性的可能性，指常有的行为，意为“有时会...”
*Peter can be really annoying.
彼得有时候非常烦人。
*It can happen in our daily life.
这有时候会在生活中发生。
在否定句中和疑问句中表示主观猜测，这时can和could无时态的差
异，只是can的语气较为肯定，而could则不如can的语气那么肯定.
*The man in red couldn't be Mr. Li.
穿红衣服的男士不太可能是李先生。
*The man in red can't be Mr. Li.
穿红衣服的男士不可能是李先生。
can/could have done表示对过去的推测
*What can Mary have done to the child
玛丽究竟对那个孩子做了什么？
*Could the shop have opened last night
昨夜那家店铺有没有可能开门呢？
