Lesson Plan for Unit 4 "Hands - on Fun"
Duration: 40 minutes
I. Teaching Objectives
Knowledge Objectives
Students will master new vocabulary related to DIY activities, such as "lantern", "shelf", "paper roses", "tape", "glue", and phrases like "put together", "make... by hand".
Students will be able to use sentence structures like "What are you going to do... ", "I need some... to make them.", "Can I... with you " correctly.
Ability Objectives
Students will improve their reading, speaking, and writing skills through various interactive activities.
Students will be able to describe different DIY activities and express their opinions about making things by hand.
Emotional Objectives
Students will develop an interest in DIY and appreciate the fun and satisfaction of creating things by hand.
II. Teaching Key Points
Mastery of new vocabulary and sentence structures related to DIY.
Ability to talk about and describe DIY activities.

Using the new vocabulary and sentence structures fluently and accurately to communicate about DIY.

V. Teaching Procedures
1. Warm - up (5 minutes)
Teacher's Activity: Greet the students and show pictures of various DIY creations (e.g., hand - made toys, decorated notebooks, homemade ornaments) on the PPT. Ask: “Do you like DIY What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever made by hand ”
Students' Activity: Share their thoughts and experiences about DIY with the class.
Purpose: To engage students and introduce the topic of hands - on activities.
2. Pre - reading (7 minutes)
Teacher's Activity:
Present the new words and phrases related to the unit: “lantern”, “shelf”, “paper roses”, “tape”, “glue”, “put together”, “make... by hand”. Use flashcards with pictures to explain each word. For example, show a picture of a lantern and say “This is a lantern. We can make lanterns by hand.”
Play a vocabulary game. Show the pictures quickly and ask students to shout out the corresponding words.
Students' Activity: Learn the new words, repeat after the teacher, and participate in the vocabulary game.
Purpose: To help students master key vocabulary for the lesson.
3. While - reading (12 minutes)
Activity 1: Matching (Part A)
Teacher's Activity: Ask students to look at the pictures in Part A and match them with the correct activities (a: Making mooncakes; b: Painting a wall; c: Making lanterns; d: Putting together a shelf). Give them 3 minutes to complete the task. Then check the answers together.
Students' Activity: Complete the matching task individually and then check with the teacher.
Activity 2: Reading and Role - play (Part B)
Teacher's Activity:
Have students read the conversation between Millie and Suzy in Part B silently first. Then ask them to read it aloud in pairs.
Explain the key sentence structures: “What are you going to do... ”, “I need some... to make them.”, “Can I... with you ”.
Ask pairs to role - play the conversation, encouraging them to change the underlined parts (e.g., change “paper roses” to “a model plane”).
Students' Activity: Read the conversation, understand the sentence structures, and role - play with partners.
Purpose: To improve students' reading and speaking skills through interactive activities.
4. Post - reading (10 minutes)
Group Discussion (Part C):
Teacher's Activity: Pose the question “Do you think making things by hand is fun Why or why not ” Ask students to discuss in groups of 4. Walk around to offer help and listen to their ideas. After 5 minutes, invite some groups to share their opinions.
Students' Activity: Discuss the question in groups and then share with the class.
Writing Task:
Teacher's Activity: Ask students to write a short paragraph about a DIY project they want to do. They should use the vocabulary and sentence structures learned today. Provide some prompts: “What are you going to make What materials do you need How will you make it ” Give 5 minutes for writing.
Students' Activity: Write the paragraph individually.
Purpose: To enhance students' speaking and writing abilities and deepen their understanding of DIY.
5. Summary and Homework (6 minutes)
Teacher's Activity:
Summarize the key points of the lesson: new vocabulary, sentence structures, and the fun of DIY.
Assign homework:
Review the new words and sentences.
Finish the writing task and share it with a family member.
(Optional) Try a simple DIY activity at home and take a photo to show the class next time.
Students' Activity: Listen to the summary and note down the homework.
Purpose: To reinforce learning and encourage students to practice DIY outside class.
