“Save the whales (鲸鱼)!” That’s what the picture on Jake Smith’s bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important: that showed he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one right in his own neighbourhood.
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whale’s coming. A group of the animals were swimming close to the beach in Jake’s hometown. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie, but nothing they’d have to do anything about.
Then one whale swam in the direction, directly towards land. It came in with the waves, and when the waves receded, its huge body rested on the sand. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers. They had to become rescuers (救援者). A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use.
An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery, to help move the animal. Jake and his family couldn’t do much on the beach, so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least, Jake thought, they could help in some way.
Back at the beach, they offered the food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shined the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. Everyone cheered when it headed out to sea. It swam out about a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. Then, in what looked like a jump of joy, it rose high above the water—a thank-you to those who had worked so hard to save his life.

Dogs really are man’s best friends. A new study said that dogs can use their smell to tell if a human is feeling stressed (有压力的).
They can smell the difference in people’s breath (呼吸) and sweat (汗液). Then they can tell if people are stressed or not. They could be 93.75 percent right! A study by scientists at Queen’s University Belfast, UK, said.
The scientists studied the participants’ breath and sweat both before and after doing a hard math problem. In the study, they looked at the people’s heart rate (心率), blood pressure (血压) and stress level.
The dogs found stress in 675 of the 720 people, or 93.75 percent of the time, reported the Australian news site Kids News.
Stress changes people’s breath and sweat. Dogs can smell that change, said the study’s author Clara Wilson. In the study, she also said this finding helps us understand how dogs may know humans’ thoughts and feelings.
5.How can dogs tell if people are stressed or not
A.By watching their faces. B.By smelling their breath and sweat.
C.By listening to their voices. D.By feeling their hearts.
6.What do we know about the study
A.Over 700 people took part in it. B.High school students in the UK did it.
C.It used dogs from Australia. D.It helped people get along with dogs.
7.According to Clara Wilson, dogs can ______.

C.show their feelings to strangers D.tell what people are thinking or feeling
8.How do scientists confirm (确认) that dogs are 93.75 percent right
A.The smell of the tested people is also collected by scientists.
B.Scientists make some people stressed by showing horror movies.
C.Scientists study peoples’ breath and sweat before and after a math test.
D.People who are stressed out are given different math tests.
Are dolphins brainy (聪明的) The answer must be yes! They can learn from other animals, play games, learn symbols and do much more.
Humans have studied dolphins for many years to learn how their brains work. For example, people have seen dolphins use conch shells (海螺壳) to catch fish. It tells us that dolphins are good at using tools.
In one study, scientists at a research center showed dolphins two boards, each with a different number of points. They taught the dolphins to pick out which board had fewer points. Then they showed the dolphins other sets of boards and asked them to point to the ones with the fewest points—this time with no help. The dolphins were able to do it, showing that they can understand some basic knowledge about numbers! So dolphins are clearly clever.
But are they “The Smartest Animal of All Time” That’s hard to say. Animals show cleverness in many ways. Some have great memories (记忆力). Take an elephant as an example. It can make out an elephant it met many years ago and say “hello”. Others are super problem-solvers, like octopuses (章鱼), who can work out how to open a can with a cover to get a treat inside. Monkeys can be fast learners, some birds have amazing senses of direction, and so on. All these kinds of cleverness are important, making it difficult to tell which animal is much smarter.
At last, each animal is good at finding ways to live in the changeable environment. And this means one thing for sure: dolphins are the smartest of all in being dolphins!
9.Why does the writer start the text by asking a question
A.To make a report. B.To do a survey.
C.To tell a funny story. D.To catch readers’ interest.
10.How do we know dolphins are clearly clever in Paragraph 3
A.Dolphins can use tools. B.Dolphins can compare numbers.
C.Dolphins can catch different boards. D.Dolphins can play games with people.

A.It’s hard to find clever animals in nature. B.Octopuses’ ability is not really important.
C.Dolphins are the smartest animals on earth. D.Each animal has its own ability to fit the environment.
12.In which unit of a textbook can the text be found
A.Unit 1 Travelling around B.Unit 2 Sports and Fitness
C.Unit 3 The World of animals D.Unit 4 Science and Technology

“Thank you for your email. I have left the school to knit (编织) sweaters for penguins (企鹅) in Antarctica (南极洲)...I won’t teach you...until my penguin friends are happy.” Weeks ago, a teacher in the UK sent this email to her Chinese student, and it soon became popular on the Internet.
You may feel surprised at this email, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real activity. The Penguin Foundation (基金会) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia started it to save penguins. In the 1990s, there was a serious oil spill (石油泄漏) near Phillip Island. This hurt the baby penguins and made their numbers go down. When little penguins were covered in oil, they were in danger.
So, the foundation asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep them warm and stop them from eating the oil.

On the side of the road in the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve in Qinghai Province, you might see a fat wolf. It wags its tail in front of the passing cars. It hopes to get a meal.
However, the wolf was skin and bones a few months ago. It’s said that the old hungry wolf was forced to leave the wolf pack because it was not good at hunting. But that all changed after a passing driver gave it two pies and posted a video of it online. The video made the wolf very popular, and a lot of people came to the area to provide it with food.
Since then, the wolf has given up its hunting instinct and turned to passers-by for snacks. The snacks are high in oil, sugar and salt, such as pies, roasted chicken and sausages. Later, more wolves have joined this behaviour. The wolf’s change makes it look like a pet dog. But the change means that it is losing its ability to live in nature, and that may cause the wild animal to die.
In fact, it is common for wild animals like wolves and bears to be fed near the roads in provinces. People care about wild animals, but their feeding sometimes can cause harm to both animals and themselves. If a wild animal needs help, people are suggested to report it to the government for professional handling (专业处理).

There is almost no water in the desert (沙漠), but many animals can live in it. How do these animals get water and stay alive
Everything is hot and dry in the daytime, but the night is cold. Plants often have dew (露水) on them in the early morning. This is because cold air can’t hold as much water as hot air. Small insects can drink the dew, and bigger animals eat the plants with the dew on them.
Some small animals get water from the bodies of insects. Bigger animals get water from the bodies of small animals. This North American bird is called a roadrunner (走鹃). It runs fast and catches small snakes, lizards and scorpions.
Some animals can wait many years for water. When the rain falls, baby shrimps (虾) come out oftheir eggs. They grow quickly and lay new eggs. Then the water dries up, and the shrimps die. But the new eggs do not die. They wait in the ground for the next rain. They can wait for 50 years.
Most big animals can’t live in the desert because they need a few litres (升) of water every day. They can’t keep water in their bodies for a long time. But camels are different. They can drink 90 litres of water in ten minutes, and then drink nothing for a week.

Farming was one part of the country life in the past. But now, farms have come to the buildings in cities. According to a report, more young “city farmers” bought vegetable seeds (种子), nutrient soil (营养土) and gardening tools online. Sales of them are becoming more and more. But why would the young like to be “city farmers”
Zhang Chao, from Anhui Province, is a young “city farmer”. He said he became interested in planting when he lived with his grandpa in the countryside. Zhang said, “Because of my grandfather, I also learned to grow my own vegetables.”
Although it takes a lot of hard work to grow vegetables, Zhang feels a sense of achievement (成就) as the seeds grow into crops. “ ▲ ,” added Zhang, “I really want to go back to those days.” Although Zhang recently moved to a place without a yard, he keeps on growing in a balcony (阳台) garden. He has bought strawberry and tomato seeds.
Unlike Zhang, Fang Minke from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School thinks planting vegetables is a good way to relax. The girl sometimes feels stressed because of schoolwork. To help herself feel relaxed, she started planting vegetables on her balcony in 2021. Most of the seeds were from her friends. Fang didn’t always know where each plant seed was from, so she just planted them and waited patiently. After half a year, her balcony became a “small garden” with different flowers and vegetables.
Planting vegetables is now more than just a way to live. It also brings joy and purpose to young people’s lives.

The Amazing Journey of Arctic Terns
Arctic terns are small birds with a big adventure. Every year, they travel from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back—this is the longest migration of any animal on Earth. The round trip can be over 70,000 kilometers!
Why do they make such a long journey In summer, the Arctic is full of daylight, and there are plenty of insects for them to eat. They lay their eggs there. When winter comes, the Arctic gets dark and cold, so the terns fly south to the Antarctic, where it is summer and food is still easy to find.
The journey is not easy. They must fly over oceans and deserts, facing strong winds and hungry predators. But Arctic terns are smart. They follow the sun and stars to find their way. They also fly in groups to stay safe.
Scientists are amazed by these birds. Their bodies are built for long flights—they have strong wings and light bones. Even young terns can make the journey without their parents guiding them. This amazing ability has helped them survive for millions of years.

People hate mosquitoes (蚊子) because of their blood-sucking tendencies (吸血倾向). Scientists, too, are troubled by mosquitoes and have been finding ways to keep them away.
A team of scientists in the US looked into different kinds of soap. They invited volunteers to test how four different soap flavors (香味) attract mosquitoes.
After some experiments, the scientists found several chemicals (化学物质) in the soap that can influence the mosquitoes’ “choice of food”. Two chemicals, one with the smell of coconut and another with the smell of flowers, can keep mosquitoes away.
The team also found that it’s not just the chemicals that influence mosquitoes, it’s the combination of chemicals and each person’s smell. For example, people who attract mosquitoes can be more attractive to them after using one type of soap. They can also repel (击退) mosquitoes by using another kind of soap.
How mosquitoes manage to find humans also made scientists interested. According to a new study, scientists built a “canteen” for hundreds of mosquitoes. In the 20-by-20-meter facility, there were six pads that had the smell of different humans.
They found that mosquitoes can track smells up to 60 meters. Also, mosquitoes are most attracted to a kind of chemical called carboxylic acid (羧酸), which is usually produced by bacteria (细菌) on human skin. The smell of one pad wasn’t attractive to mosquitoes, and scientists believed it was because he is a vegetarian (素食者).
By analyzing the chemicals that either attract or repel mosquitoes, scientists are able to improve mosquito repellent. With more studies, scientists believe changing a person’s diet could one day make them mosquito-proof. This is especially good for regions where mosquitoes carry diseases, such as malaria (疟疾).

Have you ever seen chipmunks (花栗鼠) They look very much like squirrels (松鼠), but they spend much of their time on the ground. People name this animal chipmunk because they make the special chip-chip sound. There are as many as 25 kinds of chipmunks, and most live in North America. A wild chipmunk can live for 2 to 5 years.
Chipmunks are very small, and they enjoy living alone. When they are two months old, they leave their mothers to live by themselves. They build their own homes and start collecting food there all by themselves. They do not like living or making friends with other chipmunks much.
Unlike other hibernating (冬眠的) animals, chipmunks do not live on body fats during winters. They collect and keep food during summers and eat it during winters. In winter, they don’t sleep all the way through the winter. They are light sleepers and wake up every few days to eat food.
Chipmunks may not be as popular as pet dogs or pet cats, but they can be good ones. They can feed on many things from vegetables and fruits to nuts (坚果) and bird eggs. They sleep at night, so you don’t have to look after them during nighttime. But you have to remember one thing—chipmunks have trust problems, so it takes time for them to become close to you.

Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it’s dark. Most of us go for our work and study in the daytime. We almost never see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much. Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there is always some type of artwork or story that includes an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children’s books, etc. So what makes owls so popular
Some bird researchers believe owls’ popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. In order to see clearly in the dark, owls have evolved (进化) to have large eyes. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical (圆筒状的). So owls cannot roll (翻转) their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost around on their necks.
Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided (不平衡)—the left ear is a little higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s whole face acts like a satellite dish (圆盘式卫星接收器) for sound waves. Their beaks (鸟喙) are very small so that they won’t get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as strange and wonderful animals. For a long time, people made up lots of myths (神话) about them. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some say owls are witches (女巫) in disguise (伪装). These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made them become more popular!
