本质:“过去 + 正在进行”,强调动作在过去的 “时间节点 / 时间段” 中处于 “未完成、持续进行” 的状态。
例:She was watching TV at 8 o'clock last night.(昨晚 8 点,她正在看电视。-强调 “8 点这个时刻” 动作正在进行)

构成规则: “be 动词的过去式(was/were)+ 动词 - ing 形式” 构成
tips:
主语为第一 / 三人称单数(I, he, she, it)时,用 “was”;
主语为第二人称 / 复数(you, we, they)时,用 “were”。
常见时间状语
过去进行时的识别依赖 “过去时间标志”,以下为高频时间状语:
具体时刻:
at 8 o'clock last night, at that moment, at this time yesterday
时间段:
from 3 to 5 p.m. last Sunday, during the meeting, all afternoon
从句引导词:
when当…… 时,常用一般过去时;while在…… 期间,常用过去进行时
