Numbers are everywhere in our daily lives. For example, we learn from our maths teacher that one
plus one equals two. There are 60 seconds in one minute. There are 60 minutes in one hour. There are
24 hours in one day. There are 7 days in one week. There are 4 weeks in one month. There are 12
months in one year. These are all basic facts that we know by heart. They are important to our study
and work.
Do you ever stop to think about how numbers came into being and how they developed I’s sure
that our society would have never developed without numbers. However, the development of numbers
is still a puzzle(疑问) to us. That’s because when ancient people developed simple ways of counting,
they didn’t leave any record behind. Even though scientists are trying their best to find out the secrets
correctly now, they still don’t know much about it.
It’s not difficult to guess that numbers and counting began with the number “1”. But ancient people
probably didn't call it “one”. They likely counted by ones and recorded by carving lines on a bone. The
earliest evidence(证据) of this is the Ishango Bone(伊尚戈骨). A man from Belgium found it in 1960 in
Uganda, a country in Africa. The bone is believed to be more than 20, 000 years old. It has many lines
on it. The lines look like what we would call “tally marks” today. Scientists think those lines show how
ancient people used numbers.
( ) 26. How did the writer develop Paragraph 1
A. By telling stories. B. By showing steps.
C. By asking questions. D. By giving examples.
( ) 27. Why is the development of numbers a puzzle
A. People today are not smart enough to find it out.
B. Ancient people didn’t record their ways of counting at all.
C. People today can’t find any records of ancient ways of counting.
D. Ancient people forgot to leave any records of their ways of counting.
( ) 28. Where was the Ishango Bone found
A. In China. B. In Egypt. C. In Uganda. D. In Belgium.
( ) 29. What is the purpose of this passage
A. To ask people to learn maths well. B. To introduce the history of numbers.
C. To show what the Ishango Bone looked like. D. To teach people some ancient
ways of counting.

Still, others think some parts of our digital legacies are too personal to be shared. “Whether social
media accounts can be passed down is still questionable, because they are highly personal,” said
Wang Cheng, a professor at Peking University Law School.

According to the survey, 16% of the students think reading is boring, 12% don’t know what to read
and 4% have other reasons. Most students, about 68%, think they have no time to read. However, I
believe if we truly want to read, we can always find time.
First, we can use our spare moments wisely. Some short breaks between activities are perfect for
reading. Also, we can always carry a book. This way, we can read anytime, anywhere. Every minute
counts! Second, we can use an AI reading assistant. It can help us make our own reading plans and
remind us of our reading goals. This way, we can control our time better.
In a word, reading opens doors to new worlds and knowledge. Let’s try to find the joy of reading
together!
