I was born and raised in Minnesota, the USA, but as an adult I have mostly lived in Europe and Africa. I teach cross-cultural management at the International Business School near Paris. For the last 15 years, I’ve studied how people in different parts of the world build trust, communicate, and make decisions especially in the workplace.
While traveling in Tokyo recently with a colleague, I gave a short talk to a group of 20 managers. At the end, I asked whether there were any questions or comments. No hands went up, so I went to sit down. My colleague whispered to me, “I think there actually were some comments, Erin. Do you mind if I try ” I agreed, but I guessed it a waste of breath. He asked the group again. “Any comments or questions ”
Still, no one raised a hand, but this time he looked very carefully at each person in the silent audience. Gesturing to one of them, he said, “Do you have something to add ” To my amazement, she responded “Yes, thank you.” and asked me a very interesting question. My colleague repeated this several times, looking directly at the audience and asking for more questions or comments.
After the session, I asked my colleague, “How do you know that those people had questions ” He hesitated, not sure how to explain it, and then said, “it has to do with how bright their eyes are.”
He continued, “In Japan, we don’t make as much direct eye contact as you do in the West. So when you asked if there were any comments, most people were not looking directly at you. But a few people in the group were looking right at you, and their eyes were bright. That indicates that they would be happy to have you call on them.”
I thought to myself I would never have learned from my upbringing in Minnesota. Since then, I try to focus on understanding behavior in other cultures I encounter, and keep finding the bright eyes in the room.

Imagine standing in front of a restaurant menu with countless options, each sounding appealing. You spend 20 minutes thinking, only to feel anxious that the dish you finally choose might not be the best one available. This is “FOBO” — the fear of a better option.
“FOBO is the anxiety that something better will come along, which makes it difficult to commit to existing choices when making a decision,” said venture capitalist Patrick McGinnis, who came up with the term, “Especially if there are several options available, you worry that a better or even perfect choice might be out there, yet you struggle to choose just one.” While it’s important to weigh pros and cons and think through major decisions, FOBO keeps us caught in a loop (循环), forever chasing the unclear “what if”.
The concept of FOBO is based on a mistaken belief that “the longer we look, the more options we will have, and this will somehow lead to a better outcome.” However, there’s no guarantee of this. Instead, people may wait so long that they end up losing good options and regret not making a choice sooner. Constantly second-guessing oneself and living in uncertainty can cause stress and exhaustion. Psychologist Patricia Dixon explains, “Mentally, FOBO can contribute to anxiety and depression, as the constant search for better options prevents individuals from fully enjoying their present circumstances. This mindset leads to dissatisfaction, weakens self-trust, and ultimately hinders personal growth and connection.”
To overcome FOBO, the key is to streamline decision-making processes. Start by setting clear priorities and narrowing down your options to make choices easier. Limit the time spent on decisions to avoid overthinking, break down complex decisions into smaller, manageable parts, and gather only essential information. Trust your instincts ( 直觉) and embrace the idea of focusing on finding a “good enough” option rather than obsessing over perfection. Remind yourself that even if a better option appears later, you’ve already made
progress.

An Anna’s Hummingbird (蜂鸟) was seen in the forest in California recently. As it moved its head, its feathers changed colors in the sunlight. The Anna’s Hummingbird is a small hummingbird found along the west coast of North America. The male Anna’s Hummingbird has colourful feathers on its head and throat, which can appear red, pink, orange, or green. This has led to the assumption that the bird can actively（主动地）change the colour of its feathers, but it is actually not the case.
The colour shifts we see are caused by the structure of the feathers, not by changes to the actual colouring of the feathers. The tiny structures on the surface of the feathers interact with light waves to produce certain colors. Anna’s Hummingbird feathers have tiny structures called melanosomes ( 黑色素体) that look like stacked flat discs ( 圆片). These disc stacks are super thin, close to the size of the light waves we can see. When sunlight hits these discs, the light waves bounce and interact with each other. Some colors get brighter, while others cancel out, creating shining rainbow effects — similar to how soap bubbles. This “light dance” is why hummingbird feathers look so colourful!
Unlike Anna’s Hummingbirds, some birds change the colour of their feathers in a different way. For example, the Western Tanager has yellow feathers on its head and body. During molting ( 蜕毛), it can absorb the yellow colour to display an orange-red colour underneath. Thus, while Anna’s Hummingbirds rely purely on the structures of feathers, other birds actively control the colour spread and feather movement to produce changeable feathers.
The special feather structures in Anna’s Hummingbirds allow us to witness the diversity and wonder of the world. Next time you observe an Anna’s Hummingbird in the sun, watch closely as its throat seems to flash in rainbow colors. But remember — this magic is happening in the structures through physics(物理学），not biology.

Instead of waiting for him to run into problems, provide the feedback right away. This gives the receiver the chance to make changes and avoid problems.
