I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that live next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet (头盔) while working in the garden.
The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to grow.
What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.
Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.
Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.
Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.
24. Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden
A. To protect the injured skull. B. To avoid being hit by the nuts.
C. To prevent herself from sunburn. D. To protect herself from falling over.
25. What is the tree’s survival strategy
A. It accepts new plant varieties. B. It attracts beneficial pollinators.
C. It lets out a poison to drive away pests. D. It produces a chemical deadly to some plants.
26. What is the writer’s attitude towards the walnut tree
A. Pleased. B. Conflicted. C. Curious. D. Disapproving.
27. The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ______.
A. It's better to accept than to resist. B. It's better to act than to think
C. It's better to compete than to give up. D. It's better to protect than to destroy.
C
In satellite images of the Earth from space, the United States seems to split in half: the eastern side is much brighter than the west. Across the Atlantic, Europe glints. The Nile Delta in Africa glows like a diamond. Farther east, Hong Kong and Shanghai are afire. Developed society, it’s clear, is where the light is.
A growing field of research suggests that night-time light itself is far more dangerous than the dark. Everything that lives on this planet evolved during billions of years along a reliable cycle of day and night. But artificial light breaks the cycle. This causes sleeplessness among astronauts who take pills but still get only six hours of shuteye. Shift workers, who rise with the night and work in blue light, experience not only disturbed circadian rhythms (昼夜节律), but an increased likelihood of breast cancer.
When we, in the industrialized world, do manage to turn off the lights, there are measurable, beneficial effects. In a widely reported paper last summer, Kenneth Wright at the University of Colorado took eight students camping in the Rocky Mountains for two weeks. They weren’t allowed to use any artificial light after sunset — only the glow of campfire. After a week, melatonin (褪黑素) started to rise at sunset, peak at midnight, and decrease just at sunrise. “Internal biological time under natural light-dark conditions tightly synchronizes with environmental time,” he said.
For those of us addicted to our glowing phones and tablets, an app called Flux can help. It ‘warms’ your device’s display screen so that it shifts red in the evening, more closely matching the color of the setting sun. Just a brief glimpse at your mobile phone at bedtime is enough to expose your eyes to artificial light, so fighting such a disturbance might be an exercise in vain. But even if we can’t thoroughly contain our thirst(渴望)for light, we can all make one small gesture, which could stimulate us to unplug a little more.
28. What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. Darkness presents health threats to shift workers.
B. Sleeplessness are more likely to cause breast cancer.
C. Humans can easily adapt to the changing surroundings.
D. Astronauts take pills to minimize day-and-night cycle disturbance.
29. What does the underlined word “synchronize with” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Correspond to. B. Interact with C. Object to. D. Blend with.
30. How does Flux help reduce the harmful effects of artificial light
A. By blocking artificial lights. B. By warming the screen temperature.
C. By reducing screen brightness. D. By creating the natural change of light.
31. What’s the purpose of the final sentence
A. To settle a debate. B. To suggest a solution.
C. To promote a product. D. To deny an assumption.
D
Just by typing a few keywords and waiting a few seconds, a picture comparable to that painted by a human artist appears on screen. In some paintings created by AI, an elderly man can become a handsome animated image, and pets can be turned into adorable cartoon girls or boys. Ordinary people without any painting skills can be the owners of a wonderful artwork with just a few clicks of the keyboard.
However, new things are always accompanied by controversy (争议). Issues such as whether AI art generators will replace human artists, and the copyrights on AI paintings are being hotly debated.
Huang Ge, an illustrator from Shanghai, said that it usually takes several hours or days to complete one illustration. But with AI art generators, the efficiency is greatly improved. Ding Jiao, a comic artist, considers the popularity of AI art generators reasonable as many people who are not good at drawing can create great works through them and they can satisfy users’ curiosity.
So is AI painting gradually replacing human painting In the hot topic “Using a picture to prove that human artists will never be replaced by AI” online, many netizens uploaded their paintings to prove that humans are better than AI.
“Though AI technology has developed rapidly, AI cannot replace humans as it can just copy human behavior. The warmth and inspiration in human creations are irreplaceable,” said Ding Daoshi, an independent analyst in the Internet sector.
Another controversial issue is that there is no consensus (共识) of who owns the copyright of AI art. Some users have openly sold their AI paintings and earned money, but it is still a gray area about whether these artworks belong to the users, the digital tool developers or even AI. Ding Daoshi noted that the various sides should get together to debate the issue and come up with some accepted rules as soon as possible, because AI is already involved deeply into the lives of human beings.
32. What can ordinary people achieve with AI art generators in a few seconds
A. Learn advanced painting skills. B. Sell their paintings for huge profits.
C. Replace professional artists totally. D. Create impressive artworks without drawing ability.
33. What is Ding Daoshi’s attitude toward AI replacing human artists
A. Human creativity and warmth are irreplaceable. B. AI will soon replace humans entirely.
C. AI is superior to humans in every way. D. AI lacks commercial value.
34. What does the underlined phrase “gray area” in paragraph 6 probably mean
A. A dark shadow. B. A colorful picture.
C. An unclear or undecided situation. D. A hidden place.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The End of Human Artists B. AI Art Generators: Innovation and Controversy
C. How to Sell AI Paintings Online D. AI Art: Fast, Fun and Perfect

During your teenage years, your body goes through many changes, and you may or may not like how your body develops. You start forming an image of your body. ___36___
You can develop either a positive or negative body image, depending on your mindset.
One of the major contributors of a negative body image is peer pressure. Even if you do not think you are being bullied by your group of friends, you may be laughed at casually about your appearance or you may simply notice that they seem more “perfect” than you. This can have a negative impact on your body image. ___37___ Often, an ideal body type is promoted heavily on social networks. Culture may also have a negative impact on one’s body image. If your culture values a particular body image, then that would make you unhappy if you don’t match it.
A negative body image increases the risk of unhealthy behaviors like extreme dieting, overeating, over exercising, isolation, and risky surgeries. It also lowers life satisfaction and can lead to unhappiness. ___38___
To have a more positive body image, first accept that we are all unique individuals. Imagine if everyone looked the same, the world would be a boring place. ___39___ Beauty standards keep changing all the time. What’s more, models and celebrities you see in the media may look “perfect” for the era, but, in fact, much of it is due to makeup, angles and lighting and Photoshop!
___40___ Avoid commenting on others’ looks, and you will stop criticizing yourself too. If you have peers who constantly comment about your appearance, it might be time to re-evaluate the company you keep.
Remember, your body image is simply YOUR perception (感知) of your body. This means YOU have the power to change this, even if you do not have the ability to change the perception of others.
A. Your body image is influenced by many factors.
B. Another major factor is what is shown in the media.
C. It is simply how you see, think and feel about yourself.
D. More importantly, there is no such thing as a perfect body.
E. In general, the key to a positive body image is self-acceptance.
F. Also, instead of focusing on appearances, learn to value people for who they really are.
G. Over focusing on appearance can stop you from appreciating your other positive qualities.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Oliver, a bright twelve-year-old with curly brown hair, lived in the lively town of Willow Creek. Every day after school, he would rush home to his favorite spot — a strong oak tree with a swing in the backyard to read. But today was different. He had a secret that made his heart race, but not in the good way.
At school, during art class, Oliver accidentally spilled (泼洒) red paint on his friend Mia’s drawing. In panic, he lied, saying the paintbrush slipped. Deep down, he knew he had been careless, and the lie weighed heavily on him. Mia had been so excited about her drawing for the coming school art show. He worried he had ruined it.
With a sigh, Oliver decided to take a walk to clear his mind. He wandered down the familiar path to Willow Creek Park. There, he saw Mr. Johnson, a retired headmaster. He had a kind smile that made Oliver feel at ease.
“Hello, Oliver,” Mr. Johnson called, waving him over. “What brings you here on this fine day ”
Oliver hesitated for a moment but then decided to share his burden. “I told a lie today” he admitted everything to Mr. Johnson.
“Honesty builds trust,” Mr. Johnson advised gently, “while lies create walls between friends.”
Oliver listened attentively, worrying that truth might hurt Mia. “Sometimes the truth may hurt, but it also solves the problem and makes things better,” Mr. Johnson added thoughtfully. “If you’re honest with Mia, you can work together to fix the drawing. Remember, friendship grows strong with trust.”
Oliver nodded, feeling a spark of hope. Maybe telling the truth wouldn’t be as scary as he thought.
The next day at school, the air was filled with excitement as the art show drew closer. Colorful banners decorated the halls, and students hurried to set up their displays.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

But then her face softened, and she simply nodded, accepting his apology. “Let’s fix it together,” Mia grinned. With a shared look of determination, they got to work. Transforming the red spots into blooming flowers, they added green leaves and a vivid blue sky. Their silent teamwork was efficient, turning the ruined drawing into a vibrant garden scene.
Paragraph 2:
The day of the art show arrived. Oliver and Mia stood nervously beside their artwork, palms sweating. As people began to gather around their piece, whispers of praise filled the air. Mr. Johnson, invited as a guest, gave them an approving thumbs-up. Oliver felt a sense of relief and pride wash over him. Not only did honesty save his friendship but also led to a beautiful creation. At that moment, Oliver knew that as long as he embraced honesty and nurtured the friendships he cherished, every day would be an adventure filled with color, joy, and the true essence of life.
