Family is important for everyone, no matter if you are from China or abroad. So in both East and West, we have festivals to celebrate family reunions. These festivals include Mid-Autumn Festival in China and Thanksgiving in the US. How are they celebrated and what are the differences Let's take a look.
Sharing the moonlight
With delicious moon cakes hitting the shops, the Mid-Autumn Festival arrives. It's on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. In ancient China, the day was considered a harvest festival since fruits, vegetables and grain had been collected from the fields.
The full moon is a symbol for family reunions (tuanyuan means reunion in Chinese, with yuan meaning round). Chinese people celebrate by coming together to eat, drink and be happy.
On the day, food offerings (供品) are traditionally placed at altars (供桌)set up in old yards. Moon cakes are a special festival food.
When it gets dark, people look up at the full moon and drink wine to celebrate or remember friends and relatives who are far from home." Though miles apart, could men but live forever dreaming they shared this moonlight endlessly!(但愿人长久,千里共婵娟)"wrote Song Dynasty poet Su Shi.
Showing our thanks
Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday of November. The first Thanksgiving was in December of 1621. About 100 English people took a ship, the Mayflower, to a place they named Plymouth in the northeastern US. The winter there was very cold and life was difficult. The American Indians(印第安人)helped them a lot. The English people invited the American Indians to have a big meal to thank them for all of their help. The celebration lasted for three days.
Today, people usually have a family meal on Thanksgiving. They enjoy delicious food such as pumpkins, corn and a big, golden turkey. There are other traditions on the day. For example, the turkey has a V-shaped bone in the breast. It's called a wishbone. After roasting, two people each take one end of the bone. They make a wish and then pull. If you get the larger part of the bone, you will get good luck.
The most important part of Thanksgiving is to say “thanks" - this is the spirit of the holiday. People also like to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade(游行) on TV or play American football.

What do you think of doing chores Boring even silly, right According to a new study, however, housework can be quite helpful to kids.
The scientists made an online survey about kids' chores to collect data (资料) in mid-2020. 201 children aged 5 to 13 took part in it. They came from 15 different countries across Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania(大洋洲). The results show that girls have a higher participation rate (参与率) in 32 of all 42 chores than boys. For example, only 49.5% of boys but 70.1% of girls make their own bed. Age also makes a difference. Making oneself a hot meal is a job for 53.3% of children. But only 8% of five-to-seven-year-old kids do it, rising to 59.2% of those aged 11 to 13. Since the scientists did the study during COVID-19, 37% of children did more chores than usual.
The scientists also studied the children's executive functioning (执行功能). They found that those kids often doing chores could better pay attention, understand different opinions, and remember(记住) things. When they did several things at the same time, they also had excellent performance. Those children were better at managing(管理) their behaviors and feelings as well.
So doing chores can improve children's executive functioning. One worker said, “Chores have to do with better working memory, organizing, planning and self-control. Usually, these skills begin to develop in early childhood and continue to develop into late teenage years and early adult years.”
Delays(延迟)in executive functioning development can lead to difficulties in the ability(能力) to self-control, plan and solve problems as adults. They may also have an influence on reading performance and math abilities, as well as other school performances in later childhood. Parents may let kids do the chores they should do to help develop their executive functioning abilities.

Sometimes, children cannot live with their biological parents. This might be because their parents are ill, struggling with mental health issues like depression, dealing with addiction, or facing financial difficulties. In some cases, the home environment might be unsafe. These children haven't done any thing wrong, but their parents might be going through tough times and need help.
In such situations, foster families step in. A foster family is like a second family where children can live temporarily or until they grow up. Foster parents take care of the children just like any parent would—they play with them, offer emotional support, help with homework, provide food, and ensure a safe home. Foster care is different from adoption. In foster care, the biological parents are usually still involved in the child's life and are still legally the parents. They must be part of important decisions. In adoption, the biological parents usually don’t stay involved, and the adoptive parents become the legal parents.
However, living in foster care can be challenging. Foster children often carry a “backpack” of past experiences and memories, many of which might be bad. These experiences can make it hard for them to trust others or control their emotions. They might feel sad, angry, or worried, and some might have mental health problems like anxiety or trouble concentrating. Moving to a new family can also be difficult. Sometimes, a foster child has to move from one foster family to another, which can be confusing and scary. Every time they move, they have to say goodbye to the people and places they know, making it hard to feel settled or do well in school.

What does foster family mean
What will foster parents do to their foster children
Who is the legal parents if the child is adopted by the adoptive parents
