Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that uses height and weight to assess (评估) whether a person is at a healthy weight. In recent years, some cities in China have included BMI in the PE test of the senior high school entrance examination, also known as zhongkao. For example, in 2021, Beijing officially announced that BMI would be included as part of the PE test. Shanghai has taken similar steps. While BMI is not used in zhongkao scoring in cities like Xiamen, it is still considered in PE evaluations(评估).
Zhang Yanshu, an eighth-grade student from Beijing, was overweight. “It was this summer that I decided to work on my BMI,” Zhang said. He began by running with his father and took part in a training course that included exercises like running, pull-ups and more. “I think BMI and the events for the exam go well together. When I practise these events, my BMI improves. When my BMI improves ,I feel more energetic while doing the events.”
Zhang also made great changes to his diet. “I eat brown rice now, and chicken is my primary choice of meat,” he said. “It was definitely sad to make those changes at first.” However, his efforts paid off, and his BMI reached a normal level after four months.
Chen Kaifei, a 14-year-old student from Beijing, noted that BMI can also be a concern for students who are underweight, and has caused some “figure anxiety” among students. “However, overall, I think it plays an important role,” he said. “Everyone now has a better understanding of their body and health, and I' ve started to pay more attention to my diet and lifestyle every day, all to keep a healthy BMI level.”
