Strategies for remembering
Firstly, become interested in what you’re learning. We’re all better at remembering what interests us. Few people, for example, have difficulty in remembering the names of people. If you’re not interested in what you’re learning or trying to remember, you must find a way to become so.
Secondly, find a way to create your visual memory. For example, you can remember Mike who has large ears by creating a mental picture of a microphone (a “mike”) that looks like his big ears. It is not easy to do this at first, but if you practise, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can come up with creative ways to create these images.
Thirdly, create a mental memory tree. If you’re trying to memorize a large number of facts, find a way to relate them in your mind visually with a memory tree. Construct (建造) big branches first, then leaves. Branches and leaves should carry labels that are personally meaningful to you in some way, and the organization of the facts (“leaves”) should be logical. For example, it’s easier to remember 467890 as 467 and 890 than as six individual digits.
Fourthly, do most of your study in the afternoon. Though you may identify yourself as a “morning person” or “evening person”, afternoon appears to be the best time of a day you actually study.
Last but not least, get enough sleep to keep memories. Not just at night after you’ve studied but the day before you study as well. It’s far better to do this than to stay up all night for an exam.
There are many fun and effective ways to help you remember English words. Discuss your ideas with your classmates.
Remembering English words
P107
Speaking
Task 1
While-learning
S1: How do you remember English words
S2: Well, one way to remember English words is to make a word web. For example, if you want to remember words related with “memory”, you can write “memory” in the centre. Then draw lines outward from the centre and connect other words with it, such as “forgetful”, “improve”, “decline” and “brain”.
S1: I see! Can we make the web bigger
S2: Definitely. You can continue adding words to the web. For example, you can write “active” and “stressed” around the word “brain”.
...
① keep a notebook 记笔记
② learn words in context 在上下文语境中学习单词
③ make a word web 制作一个单词网
④ relate with 与……有关
⑤ outward adv. 向外;朝外
⑥ definitely adv. 肯定地;明确地

What’s your special method for …
Do you mind telling me about …

Task 2
1. Imagine a picture
I can imagine a picture “smiles” to remember the word “smiles”.
2. Act out the word
I can remember “spider” if someone puts a spider on my hand.
3. Organize the words into a group
Apples, oranges and pineapples are all fruit.
4. Divide a word
We can divide “advantage” into three parts — “ad” “van” “tage”.
Possible answers
5. Add something after or before a word
We can put “un” before happy to remember unhappy.
6. Compare two similar words
We can remember “buy” and “by” by comparison.
7. Pay attention to the voiceless letter
There is a voiceless letter “h” in the word “hour”, so we should say “an hour”.
8. Pronounce correctly
We can remember there are four syllables in the word “invitation”.
Loss of plosion
When two plosive consonants (e.g. /t/, /d/, /p/, /b/, /k/ or /ɡ/) are next to each other, we do not pronounce the first one, and there is usually a short pause between them. We call this the loss of plosion. The following are some examples:
foo(t)ball / f tb l/ use(d) to /ju st tu/ si(t) down /'st da n/.

爆破音共六个,即: /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/ 和 /ɡ/。
当一个爆破音后面紧跟着另一个爆破音时,前面
的爆破音不发生爆破。
朗读方法是:对于前一个爆破音,只作发音的姿
势,刚要发出时,立即发出第二个爆破音,这种现象
叫做“失去爆破”。
注意:“失去爆破”现象既可以出现在一个单词中,也可以出现在两个单词之间。
