Ohio State University says all students will be required to train in AI
Ohio State University has announced that all of its students will be using artificial intelligence later this year, requiring them to become fluent in combining __11__ learning with AI.
“Ohio State has an opportunity and responsibility to __12__ students to not just keep up, but lead in this workforce of the future,” said the university’s president, Walter Ted Carter Jr. He added, “Artificial intelligence is __13__ the way we live, work, teach and learn. In the not-so-distant future, every job, in every industry, is going to be affected in some way by AI.”
Ohio State’s academic vice president, Ravi Bellamkonda, added that its AI fluency initiative will include education about the technology throughout the undergraduate curriculum. “Through the initiative, Ohio State students will be ‘__14__’ – fluent in both their major field of study and the application of AI in that area,” he said. The university said its program will __15__ the incoming freshman class and future classes, in order to make every Ohio State __16__ “fluent in AI and how it can be responsibly applied to advance their field”.
The novel embrace of AI in higher education comes as a recent study by the Pew Research Center found 26% of teenagers used ChatGPT for schoolwork in 2024 – twice as many as in 2023. But with AI __17__ becoming mainstream, students will not be allowed to use generative AI to pass off assignments as their own work – and faculty staff will be advised on how to maintain academic integrity.
Steven Brown, an associate professor of philosophy at the university, told NBC News that after students turned in the AI-assisted papers he found “a lot of really __18__ ideas”. Brown said that banning AI from classwork is “shortsighted”, and he encouraged his students to discuss __19__ and philosophy with AI chatbots. “It would be a disaster for our students to have no idea how to effectively use one of the most powerful tools that humanity has ever created,” Brown said. “AI is such a powerful tool for self-education that we must rapidly adapt our teaching methods or be left in the dust.”
“AI technology is here to stay,” said then lieutenant governor (副州长) Jon Husted last year while announcing an AI toolkit for schools, adding that it would help the state lead in __20__ the challenges and opportunities brought by artificial intelligence.
II. Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
The idea that young people today have a damaging relationship with digital technology — a relationship that leaves them __21__ grounded in the real world and psychologically and socially undeveloped — is not just an old person’s concern.
According to a 2023 survey, seventy-five percent of young people were worried about social media’s impact on young people’s mental health. Sixty percent of Gen Z adults said that they wished they could return to the predigital era, a time that largely __22__ their own lives. Consumer trends also demonstrate the historical nostalgia(怀旧). The oft-noted increase in sales of vinyl records, CDs, __23__ books and board games is driven only in part by older adults looking to __24__ their youth. Young people who grew up on digital entertainments are also a major force behind this revitalization.
Is Gen Z really in the grip of historical nostalgia — and if so, is that a good or bad thing Nostalgia gets a bad rap. It is often characterized as an unproductive __25__ with an idealized past, one that prevents people from living in the present and planning for the future. In reality, nostalgia, often a source of comfort, guidance and inspiration, helps people __26__ in the present and build a better future. __27__, nostalgia is, counterintuitively, a future-oriented endeavor. We draw on it to resolve our dissatisfactions in the present and to __28__ with hope and determination. Yes, nostalgia can be indulged. But for most people, most of the time, it is a stabilizing and __29__ force.
Given Gen Z’ __30__ about their relationships with the digital technologies that have saturated their lives, perhaps they are __31__ mining the past to enrich their present lives — especially by fostering a greater appreciation for __32__ living. This is how they reap the benefits of the pre-internet world. For example, the practice of listening to an entire vinyl record is a valuable exercise in __33__ focus, since you can’t click on a YouTube video halfway through. Even something as simple as a board game night with friends may help them feel more comfortable and confident in professional social settings.
There is no reason to think that members of Gen Z are turning against modern technology. By many metrics, they appear to be enthusiastic about the latest innovations. But progress always involves __34__. Historical nostalgia may be helping a younger generation to harness the benefits of new technology while preserving the virtues of the tangible, physical experiences that remain essential to human flourishing. With the rise of artificial intelligence, all eyes are on the future. But it is worth looking to the past, as Gen Z appears to be doing, to __35__ the future we actually want.

When experts ponder the future of automobiles, they tend to focus on driverless cars and flying cars. At this year’s technology show in Las Vegas, Hyundai has introduced a third vision for how vehicles might traverse the world around them — one that does not rely solely on wheels.
Hyundai’s latest concept car, called “Elevate,” is designed to walk as easily as it rolls. With wheels at the end of long robotic legs, the machine would allow “users to drive, walk or even climb over the most dangerous terrain,” according to the company.
The company — which labels the machine a UMV, or “ultimate mobility vehicle” — said the concept was inspired by the need for “resilient transportation” in disaster zones. John Suh, Hyundai vice president, stated: “When a tsunami or earthquake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris(废墟碎片) field. They have to go the rest of the way by foot. Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete.” Suh added the vehicle’s usefulness would not be limited to emergency situations. For people with disabilities without access to an ADA ramp, an autonomous version could walk to a front door and position itself so a wheelchair could “roll right in.”
How realistic is the Elevate concept David Bailey, a professor at Aston Business School, told the BBC that although concept cars may not make it to the factory floor, they can help generate valuable new ideas. “For most of us, it’s going to be wheels and roads, but in extreme situations there may be scope for this sort of thing,” Bailey said. “There may well be applications in terms of emergency services — but there are very big technological challenges to make this sort of thing.”
Hyundai said the vehicle is designed to use “both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits(步法),” giving it the ability to travel in any direction. The legs fold up into a “stowed drive-mode” to save power. Those legs would be able to climb over a five-foot wall and step across a five-foot gap. When the surface is relatively flat, the vehicle turns to conventional wheels, but when the terrain grows craggy, the legs extend, taking synchronized(同步的) steps forward.
36. What is the primary purpose of Hyundai's Elevate concept according to the passage
A. To replace all traditional wheeled vehicles in daily use.
B. To provide a solution for mobility in extreme and challenging environments.
C. To compete directly with driverless and flying car technologies.
D. To primarily serve as a luxury vehicle for adventurous consumers.
37. According to John Suh, what makes Elevate particularly innovative compared to traditional rescue vehicles
A. Its potential to provide last-mile access where conventional vehicles fail.
B. Its capacity to navigate through completely destroyed terrain without obstacles.
C. Its ability to carry more first responders to disaster sites.
D. Its feature of being fully autonomous without human operators.
38. Which of the following best describes Professor Bailey's attitude towards the Elevate concept
A. Confident in its immediate mass production for commercial use.
B. Dismissive of its practical value in saving people in dangerous situations.
C. Optimistic about its potential yet aware of the difficulties.
D. Concerned mainly about its cost-effectiveness for everyday use.
39. What does the description of "mammalian and reptilian walking gaits" primarily suggest about the vehicle's design
A. It prioritizes biological accuracy over mechanical efficiency.
B. It focuses on imitating animal movements for aesthetic appeal.
C. It requires animal-like flexibility in difficult terrains.
D. It incorporates diverse mobility patterns for enhanced adaptability.

Steps to Introducing a New Pet to Your Current Pets
Adding a new pet to your family can be an exciting and rewarding experience. However, taking the necessary steps to ensure a smooth and successful introduction between your new pet and your current furry friends is essential. Following these steps will help foster positive relationships and minimize potential conflicts.
Prepare the Environment
Before bringing your new pet home, set up a separate space with all the necessary supplies such as food and water bowls, bedding, litter box, toys, and scratching posts. This space will be a safe haven for your new pet to retreat to and gradually adjust to their new surroundings.
Scent Introduction
Animals rely heavily on their sense of smell to familiarize themselves with their environment and each other. To start the introduction process, swap bedding or toys between your current pets and the new pet. This scent exchange will help them become familiar with each other's scent, reducing the novelty when they finally meet face-to-face.
Controlled Visual Introduction
Allow your pets to see each other without direct physical contact. Use a baby gate or a pet barrier to separate them initially. This controlled visual introduction will enable them to observe each other's behaviors and body language, promoting a gradual acclimation and reducing potential stress.
Gradual Interaction
Once your pets have become accustomed to each other's scents and shown positive behavior during the controlled visual introductions, you can gradually interact face-to-face. Start by allowing short and supervised periods of physical contact, gradually increasing the duration as they become more comfortable with each other. To find out more about pet guides, you can visit our site.
Equal Attention and Affection
Ensure that you give equal attention and affection to all your pets. It's crucial to reassure your current pets that they are still loved and valued, even with the presence of a new companion. Maintaining their regular routines and showering them with attention, you help prevent feelings of jealousy or insecurity.
Supervised Playtime
Supervised playtime is an excellent way for your pets to bond and establish positive associations with each other. Engage them in interactive play sessions, providing toys and treats to redirect their focus onto enjoyable activities rather than potential conflicts. Always monitor their interactions closely and intervene if any signs of aggression or tension arise.
If you encounter significant challenges or ongoing conflicts during the introduction process, don't hesitate to seek professional help.
40. The article is primarily organized by ______.
A. comparing different pet introduction methods
B. listing the benefits of pet adoption
C. analyzing causes of pet conflicts and the potential risks
D. presenting a sequential guide to pet introduction
41. According to the article, why is scent exchange between pets recommended before their face-to-face meeting
A. Because it helps eliminate aggressive behavior completely.
B. Because it allows pets to be familiar with each other’s smell, reducing tension.
C. Because it encourages pets to play together more actively.
D. Because it replaces the need for visual introduction.
42. The article would be LEAST helpful to which reader
A. Someone who just adopted a second dog.
B. A family introducing a kitten to their older cat.
C. A zookeeper introducing a new animal to an existing exhibit.
D. A person bringing a new rabbit into a home with existing pets.

I was reading college freshman essays when I was slowed and stunned by these words: “My new AI Bestie.” I had assigned my students a 500-word essay on artificial intelligence. As I expected, the majority of essays detailed the functions and use of ChatGPT.
What I did not anticipate was the “bestie” line in this particular piece, followed by more description of how she formed both a personal confidante and professional counseling relationship with her ChatGPT.
A recent study reports that 70% of teens have used AI companions, with half using them regularly. The mental health implications are substantial: disruption of social skills, increased isolation, loneliness, and a new form of addiction. At its best, AI is a tool that guides us downstream. But for many young people, it is becoming a wave that could overwhelm them.
What AI fails to offer us is touch, which separates humanity from machines. Humans are neurologically wired to require touch from other sentient(有感知能力的) beings. In a recent meta-analysis, German researchers confirmed that touch significantly benefits both physical and mental health. Interestingly, while robotic massage offered physical benefits, the mental health gains were notably weaker.
Growing up in the ’70s, the options for non-sentient connections were limited to stuffed animals, pet rocks, and imaginary friends. Moving into the teen years, a number of my friends held fast to their favored stuffed animals, if in a more private manner. I never engaged in any of these relationships. I did, however, spend countless hours alone in my backyard playing real basketball with imaginary opponents, complete with graceful movements and mixes of victories and defeats. This activity was my go-to in good times and bad, whether I was feeling alone or connected. The physicality calmed and complemented me. The soft leather ball in my sweaty hands. The conversation between the sun and the light breeze on my face and forearms. This rapid heart rate experience cleared my mind and opened a space for me to explore my loss or celebration. Often, it moved me to reach out to others in search of comfort and connection.
Loneliness doesn’t fade away at the borders of any time or generation. Nor does the need for us to engage all of our senses in separate and shared synergy(协同作用).
Following my panic after reading my student’s AI essay, I returned to my smartphone’s newsfeed. There, I saw a trend of Millennials and Gen Zers migrating towards the unplugged activities of the older generations: board games, community gardens, fishing, and vinyl records.
Reading these reports about the shift to broader, collective sensory experiences that are essential to our psychological well-being replenishes(重新充满) my hope for humanity. No, we won’t eradicate the AI footprint. That should never be the goal. AI has too much constructive value for our world. We just need to redouble our efforts to understand the benefits and limitations of its place in our lives.
43. The word “confidante” (paragraph 2) most likely refers to a person (or thing) that one can ______.
A. program with professional skills
B. trust with private thoughts and feelings
C. purchase at an affordable price
D. use to complete academic assignments
44. By stating “At its best, AI is a tool that guides us downstream. But for many young people, it is becoming a wave that could overwhelm them”, the author means that ______.
A. AI is most useful when it is used near rivers and oceans
B. AI is a powerful force that can either assist or drown its users
C. young people are using AI to create powerful waves on social media
D. the primary function of AI is to predict natural disasters like floods
45. The author mentions his experience of playing basketball in the backyard mainly to ______.
A. show his personal way of coping with emotions through sensory engagement
B. prove that imaginary relationships are far better than using AI friends
C. argue that sports are the only solution to the problem of loneliness
D. compare his childhood hobbies with the current trends of his students
46. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. The Rise of AI: From Tools to Best Friends
B. Why AI Can Replace Human Touch
C. Human Touch in a Digital World
D. How College Students Use ChatGPT to Write Essays
Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. What you're born with isn't what you're stuck with. B. Where the difference was observed was in connectivity. C. Once the interconnected scene is created it’s a simple visual to ease your way around the halls of the grocery store with no list needed. D. Training in method of loci can physically change the way a person remembers. E. Then there are more deliberate approaches like practicing mnemonics F. The improved memory observed after mnemonic training persists for as long as 4 months after training concludes.
Life would be a lot sweeter if you were a memory athlete. Most of us however, are not wired that way. But don't be discouraged: thanks to neuroplasticity, anyone can transcend their fallible memory. _________47_________.
There are a few relatively simple things a person can do to help improve their memory function. First up, the basics: the foundation of good memory is good health. Eating and sleeping right will lead to optimal brain function, the flow-on effect of which is a better memory.
___________48_________. A mnemonic device is a trick designed to make remembering things easier. So instead of remembering to buy eggs, rice, apples and dog food, it might be easier to think of READ, which stands for rice, eggs, apples, and dog food. This is the acrostic method.
Another more complicated mnemonic technique is called a mind palace. Let's use the same shopping list as an example. Instead of focusing on the word ‘rice,’ this technique works by focusing on the image of rice thrown on the ground in a yard. For eggs, picture a hen pecking at the rice, followed by a nearby tree of apple blossoms, the petals falling around the hen, falling on a sleeping dog. _________49_________. This technique, where you base a memory around visual images, is more formally called 'method of loci'.
A recent study published in Neuron has unearthed some interesting insights about the brains of competitive memorizers. The researchers invited 23 of the world's top 50 memory athletes to have their brains scanned in rest states, and while performing memory tests, and matched each champion to a control participant. Anatomically(解剖学上), the scans showed there was no difference in brain structure or region size between the groups. _________50_________ And what's more, after they gave the 'naive' control group training in the method of loci, their neural connectivity began to look more like that of the pros.
III. Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

The Future of “Thinking” AI
AI companies often describe their reasoning agents as “thinking” machines. That can be misleading. These agents do perform impressive tasks. But they can suffer some of the same drawbacks. They may produce biased content, for instance. When an agent uses a model to perform a complex task on its own, a bunch of small problems can also snowball into bigger ones.
And that worries Ghosh. He co-authored a paper on arXiv in February that sums it up: Fully autonomous AI agents should not be developed. Being “fully autonomous,” means being able to act entirely on its own. DeepSeek-R1 and similar bots aren’t fully autonomous yet. They can do more complex tasks than chatbots. Yet a real person still guides the process. And Ghosh thinks that’s essential. “I don’t think these systems are nearly as reliable and as accountable as humans,” he says.
But things are moving quickly. In late February, the robot company Figure AI announced a new AI model called Helix. Robots that use this model are better at reasoning. In early March, a different Chinese company, named Monica, announced a brand new agent named Manus. It’s built atop a handful of different AI models. It’s also close to fully autonomous. When you give it a task, it decides on its own how it should solve it. Then it starts taking actions, such as searching online, writing code, creating charts and more. This all happens (in the cloud) while you wait. Manus then alerts you when its task is done.
And consider this: Companies like DeepSeek, Monica and OpenAI can now use their agents to come up with ideas on how to build better reasoning models. Harris, of Last Week in AI, is confident that this is already happening. How well they will work remains to be seen. Clearly, it’s an exciting time for AI innovation.
