Have you ever done something that you didn’t really want to do, just because you want to get along well with others. When we do this, we’re not being true to ourselves. It’s important to be honest about your feelings because it can make you happier.
Being true to yourself means listening to your own thoughts and feelings. If you want to be alone sometimes, then being true to yourself might mean saying no to your friends who want you to play together. Being true to yourself is when your actions match your real thoughts.
When we keep on doing things we don’t like and ignore (忽略) our thoughts and feelings, it can make us feel uncomfortable, worried or sad. Naomi Richards told THE WEEK Junior, “Children need to know clearly who they are, their values and their beliefs. Then they are more likely to be true to themselves.”
One part of being true to yourself is by learning how to say no in a polite way and following your beliefs. What’s more, you can learn how to be true to yourself by being yourself—sticking to your views, thoughts and actions.

Amy is a middle school student who never refuses her friends although it makes her feel very tired. Yesterday, when her math teacher pointed out a small mistake in her homework, her face turned red and she cried. She thought to herself all day, “See, I’m so bad and nobody loves me!”
As teenagers, some of you may have the same experience as Amy. You may always try to make others happy and get very upset when others criticize (批评) you. Studies have shown that these two habits come from a feeling called shame. Shame makes you believe you’re not good enough, and keeps you thinking, “If I’m not perfect, people won’t love me.” This feeling stops you from showing how you really feel and makes you see every small mistake as proof (证据) of your unworthiness (无价值).
The good news is you can fight against shame. First, ask yourself, “Why do I feel this way ” or “Would I say the same thing to a friend if they were in my place ” Second, say to yourself, “Everyone makes mistakes, and that’s okay.” or “I am worthy (值得的) of love just as I am.” Third, take small brave actions like saying “no” when someone asks you to do something you don’t want to do, or writing down three things you’re good at when you feel criticized. In a word, building self-worth is the most important thing. Remember—whether you are perfect or not, you are worthy of love.
Amy never refuses her friends, and she has a strong fear of criticism. That’s because 11 . Shame makes you believe you’re not good enough and unlovable. It leads you to 12 and see every small mistake as proof of your unworthiness. However, there are some helpful ways to fight against shame. First, question negative thoughts. Second, 13 . When we think of the word “positive (积极的)”, most of us probably think “happy”. However, happiness isn’t the only type of positivity. There are many ways to be more positive in your life, even when you’re experiencing sadness, anger, or challenges.
15 . It sounds simple, but it’s hard to do sometimes. Your life may be very busy, so stick to some tasks into your day that usually make you happy. When you do something that you love, you are far away from being sad or negative.
Stay with friends. Admire the people in your life who have stood by you through thick and thin. Their support helps you become more positive, and in the process you will probably help them too. 16 .
Don’t be afraid of failure. As Franklin D.Roosevelt said, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. 17 . It’s about how we get back up again that counts. If we’re expecting to succeed, but not afraid of failure, we have the best chance of staying positive throughout it all.
Accept where you are. You can’t change the way you think, if you can’t solve the problem. 18 , and if you do so, the change will begin.
What do you usually do to be positive (no more than 20 words)
19
A.Make a proper goal
B.Do things you love to do
C.Accept bad thoughts and feelings

Do you have exam stress (压力) Exam time is the most stressful time of the year. You have worked all school term in your classes and now it’s the time to prove (证明) what you have learned. In fact, it’s common for most of us to have exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good thing. If we have proper (适当的) stress, we can think actively and work harder. Besides, it can help us to focus (聚焦) on the preparation of exams. However, if we can’t deal with stress well, we may make things worse.
When I was in school, I used to get very stressed over my exams. So did my friends. Some of them stopped eating and others ate too much! Some gave up and others burned themselves out! But the most important thing to remember when studying is not to feel frightened! Take the middle path (路线)—stay calm, eat healthy and get a rest. Pushing yourself too hard is just as dangerous as not studying enough. A tired, overworked brain is just as useless as a lazy, empty one!
So, what should you do Set a time each day for study and a time for relaxation. You may have less time to relax than usual, but you still need to let your brain rest for a few moments. Get plenty of sleep. If you are tired, information will not stick in your memory.
It does no good to think too much about your exams. Some students may think that the rest of their life depends on exams. That’s not true. Instead, just see the exams as another difficulty you will overcome (克服). 到目前为止,你已经克服了你生活中各种各样的困难。With the right amount of work and focus, you will pass your exams with flying colors!

Thanksgiving Day was coming. A first-grade teacher gave her class an interesting task (任务): draw a picture of something they were thankful for.
Most of the students didn’t come from rich families, but many would still celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditions. The teacher thought these would be the main subject in her students’ drawings. And she was right—at least, for most of them.
But one student, Douglas, drew something different. Douglas was a quiet boy. He seemed unhappy most of the time. During breaks, while other kids played together, he always stood close to the teacher. There was sadness in his eyes, but no one knew why.
His picture showed just one thing: a hand. An empty hand, with nothing else.
The other students started guessing whose hand it was. “Maybe it’s a farmer’s hand,” said one, “because farmers raise turkeys.” Another student guessed, “It could be a police officer’s hand, to keep us safe.” Everyone had different ideas.
Finally, the teacher walked to Douglas’s desk, crouched down, and asked, “Whose hand is this ” Douglas looked away shyly and answered, “Yours, teacher.”
She then remembered all the times she’d held his hand. When they walked around the school, or when she helped him hold a pencil. She’d often said, “Hold my hand, Douglas. Let’s go.”
Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.

You’re walking down the street, thinking about your own business when a stranger passes by. He doesn’t say anything at all, but he gives you a smile. Sometimes in a moment and almost unwillingly, you will do the same thing. You just can’t help it and you catch his smile. For some unknown reason, when we see someone smile, we just can’t stop ourselves doing the same thing.
In honor of World Smile Day (the first Friday in October), it’s the time we got real answers to this matter. Is smiling contagious (感染性的) Well, a study in the Trends in Cognitive Sciences magazine gives the answer “yes”. As part of it, psychologists (心理学家) looked into why we often copy people’s facial expressions when we talk to them.
Interestingly, one of the results was that we “try on” the emotions (感情) of others when we are talking with them. So, for example, when a friend tells us some good news happily, we may show the same emotion through our smile. In doing so, we are feeling and understanding their joy. So the reason we smile back when someone smiles at us is that we want to feel the same way as that person.
However, not everyone can do this. During the research, the psychologists find people with some illnesses can’t copy others’ facial expressions. They know someone is smiling but they cannot smile back.
64.What will people sometimes do when a stranger gives them a smile

Weather affects our feelings. Sunlight helps our body make vitamin D (维他命D). Vitamin D can make us happy. In places with little sunlight, people may feel sad. When it’s very hot and sunny, some people may get angry easily. Weather also affects us in language. We use weather words to talk about our feelings. When we are happy, we can say “I feel sunny”. When we are angry, we can say “a stormy face”.
It’s very important to go outside every day. We can get fresh air or sunlight. Remember, weather is not just about rain or sun—it’s a mirror (镜子) of our lives.

Everyone sometimes talks to themselves. Self-talk is a normal part of life. 85 If your self-talk is negative (消极的) and you start to believe it, that can hurt you. Here are some ways on how to turn your self-talk around.
See what you’re saying. If you catch thoughts like “I’m not smart enough” or “I’ll never get into college,” tell yourself to stop. Then ask: Is this thought true Is it helping me 86
