During a break at work last spring, I took a quick look at my Facebook account. I had several notifications (通知), and one of them was a friend request. I looked more closely at the screen and saw my grandmother’s picture next to the request. “Barbara Haywood sent you a friend request,” the notification stated. Maybe it was a joke. I hated to think that someone could have opened an account under my grandmother’s name.
I called my mom at the end of the workday. “I have a friend request from Mammie. Is it really from her ” I asked. “It is,” my mom confirmed. She explained that my uncle Buster had helped her set up the account. “That is so amazing,” I said. I opened my app and wrote a welcome message on my grandmother’s page.
Mammie learned about Facebook gradually. At first, she simply “liked” pictures of the family. After a while, she figured out how to add comments. Her Facebook proficiency (熟练) is not of great importance. It’s the fact that she’s on social media and has daily access to pictures of her family.
My grandmother has four children, ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. We all live fairly close to her, but we also lead very busy lives. And though we invite Mammie to many performances and games, her lack of mobility limits her attendance. Now that she has a Facebook account, she doesn’t have to miss a thing. She can keep up with the latest trends (动向) and view vacation pictures.
However, she has a special way of commenting on posts. She calls us all her little babies, and she always signs her comments, “Love, Mammie.” A friend asked me the other day if I was going to tell her that she didn’t need to sign her name at the end of her comments. “I sure am not,” I told my friend. “She can use Facebook however she wants. I’m not criticizing (批评) a single thing she does.”
4. How did the author react to the friend request from her grandmother at first
A. She valued it. B. She questioned it.
C. She accepted it. D. She ignored it.
5. What really matters about her grandmother according to the author
A. Her interest in adding comments. B. Her making continuous progress.
C. Her presence on social media. D. Her using Facebook skillfully.
6. What does the author think of her grandmother’s using Facebook
A. It’s a means to document her daily life.
B. It’s an approach to exploring the world.
C. It’s a chance to make more new friends.
D. It’s a way to get involved in the big family.
7. Why did the author refuse her friend’s advice
A. She wanted to show respect for her grandmother’s choices.
B. She appreciated grandmother’s unique way of commenting.
C. She knew that her grandmother was set in her own ways.
D. She was really concerned about upsetting her grandmother.

Looking for a new film for the holiday season Consider watching the 1904 version (版本) of “Little Women,” starring Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Claire Danes and Kirsten Dunst.
Here are two reasons why you should devote a movie night to this modern classic. First, no work of literature deals with female character formation quite as well as Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel. And the 1994 film, directed by Gillian Armstrong, stays true to the spirit of this classic book about four sisters growing up in New England. Second, the film stands out independent of the novel, by stressing that living well means centering on others.
In the book, Alcott describes the four March sisters, showing both their admirable qualities and weaknesses that need to be managed. They walk a road to adulthood that is full of personal struggles, self-sacrifice (自我牺牲), and hard-won self-knowledge. Their characters are complex and well-developed, not shallow or simplistic. This well-rounded focus on women’s many sides sets “Little Women” apart from other 19th-century American stories about women, which often had overly emotional and romantic views of women’s lives.
In addition to several versions of different quality produced over the years, there is also Greta Gerwig’s 2019 feature-length adaptation. Despite an outstanding performance by Saoirse Ronan, whose Jo, the second-oldest March sister, is perhaps the most detailed and realistic of all, this modern version awkwardly changes Alcott’s message about 19th-century ideas of femininity. Toward the end of the film, Jo says lines that seem borrowed from a 21st-century course on women’s studies, and reflect experts’ understanding rather than the original text and spirit of the novel.
So, all in all, only the 30-year-old film can be watched again and again. In the 1994 adaptation, overlaided on the central plot of character development is a warm, idealized, familial atmosphere. This quality is key and hard to measure. In short, it’s the kind of movie that makes you want to reach for a blanket and tea, even if you typically don’t like blankets and aren’t a tea drinker. This is what makes it a movie that stands alone, independent of the book.
8. Why does the author recommend the 1994 adaptation of “Little Women”
A. It stars one of his favorite actresses.
B. It has been popular for the past 30 years.
C. It deals with the topic of women creatively.
D. It remains faithful to the original novel.
9. What does the author intend to stress about “Little Women” in paragraph 3
A. How it stands out from similar novels.
B. Why it appeals to female readers.
C. What makes it go beyond time and space.
D. What unique writing style it has.
10. What is a weakness of Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation
A. It uses too many special effects. B. It includes modern ideas about women.
C. It changes the original story a lot. D. It lacks excellent performances.
11. What quality of the 1994 adaptation does the author show in the last paragraph
A. Its lasting popularity. B. Its simplified storyline.
C. Its marked social effects. D. Its inviting feel.

Oleg Kononenko has become the first human to achieve 1,000 days of spaceflight over a 16-year career visiting and living on the International Space Station (ISS). The achievement comes on his fifth flight to space and during his third term as the commander of the ISS. He will become one of the most valuable human biology specimens (生物标本) in the world.
Given that both the Artemis Accords and the International Lunar Research Station initiative (倡议) aim to send men and women on longer and longer missions to space, including semi-permanent (半永久的) habitation of the moon and eventually a journey to Mars, scientists need to understand what long-term presence in outer space will do to the human body.
To that end, Kononenko, who has routinely spent many hundreds of continuous days and even years in low-Earth orbit, will be providing data points “days, months and years,” after his return, says Emmanuel Urquieta, the former chief medical officer of the NASA-funded Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH), led by Baylor College of Medicine.
Urquieta explains that medicine in space is a growing field, and that the effects of the space environment on eye health, bone loss, and blood flow are not well understood, nor are the impacts of long-term radiation exposure (辐射暴露) and space sickness.
“I’m sure that there will be a lot of research coming up in the future when he comes back to Earth and I’m sure that there will be a very long follow-up with him, you know, days, months, and years after, to try really to understand these very unique data points,” Urquieta says.
“When you project the data that we have from six-month missions to 900 days, there’s still a huge gap of data that we need to address so that we can safely say that, ‘OK, we have enough data that we can confidently say that we’re able to send someone to Mars and make sure that that person is going to come back as healthy as he or she left Earth.’”
12. What do we know about Kononenko
A. He contributed to the establishment of the ISS.
B. He discovered a valuable biology specimen.
C. He set a record for the most time in space.
D. He completed three space flights in 16 years.
13. What do the underlined words “To that end” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. To improve life support systems in space.
B. To explore the potential for lunar habitation.
C. To select astronauts for a journey to Mars.
D. To study the effects of living in space.
14. What can be concluded about Kononenko from the last two paragraphs
A. His long-term data will be crucial. B. He will conduct new space missions.
C. He will inspire confidence in others. D. His career will be fruitful.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Increased Focuses on Spaceflight Safety Concerns
B. New Opportunities for Space Health Studies
C. Future Possibilities for Space Travel
D. Big Challenges in Space Exploration

During my final year at drama school, I trained for the Carleton Hobbs Bursary Award, the winners of which would receive a 5-month agreement with the BBC Radio Drama Company. In an early task, I delivered a monologue (独白). The teacher asked me why I didn’t move, and I was confused. He advised me to try again with gestures. The difference was striking. ____16____ This lesson has stayed with me, and I’ve since appeared in over 150 BBC audio dramas.
Congruency (一致) between our words, voices and body language is vital in making our message clear. ____17____ As Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, “Suit the action to the word, the word to the action.” There can be an assumption that gestures are there to support the spoken word and nothing more.
In May 2020, Wim Pouw of the University of Connecticut published a study in which he recorded the effects of different arm gestures on the voice. He found that the muscular tension from gesturing travelled through the body, affecting the pressure in the lungs and therefore the voice. ____18____ According to Pouw, “When you hear a voice, you actually hear aspects of a person’s entire body.”
Our bodies and voices are part of the same package. ____19____ Instead, when our audience is unable to see us, their focus on how we speak becomes even sharper, so gesturing becomes all the more important.
We make an analogy (类比). The body fuels the voice, much like an engine powers a car. Gestures act like the gas pedal. ____20____ Without gestures, your message may lack energy and impact.
A. The more you use them, the stronger your voice becomes.
B. Holding the audience’s attention can be much more challenging.
C. The fact that we’re not visible doesn’t mean gesturing isn’t necessary.
D. The speech with the gestures was much more interesting.
E. Gesturing, when it’s used effectively, is a key part of that.
F. In these situations, it’s important to remember that people can hear your gestures.
G. Listeners could detect these voice changes and identify the gestures being made.

Allen was playing in his room. He heard a familiar chirping and rustling from the cage in the bedroom corner. It was his beloved Blue Finch, named Mary. The boy had cared for the bird since he was six, a gift from his mother for graduating from kindergarten and entering primary school. Now, at 12 years old, Allen had just recently celebrated his primary school graduation and was about to take another step in his life journey toward junior high school. For the past six years, Mary was his constant companion and closest friend.
As he grew up, Allen found it difficult to make friends or be close to others. Having had to move around many times and transfer schools due to his father’s work in the military, Allen never felt like he truly belonged in any one place. He always knew it wouldn’t be long before he would have to move yet again. The stress and pressure of a constantly mobile life also led to strain and pressure at home, leading to loud arguments and fights between his mother and father which he could hear from behind closed doors.
But, throughout all of this. Allen’s closest friend and companion-the true source of stability in his life—was Mary, his finch. But Mary was more than just a simple, calm pet: whenever Allen felt sad, the bird would always be singing and chirping, almost as if she sensed how he felt and wanted to lift his spirits. And when Allen fed the bird, Mary always moved across her branch to rest against his finger, never failing to bring a smile to Allen’s face. Yet, one summer day after Allen had come home after a walk at the park, he found the window of his bedroom open and the door of Mary’s cage open-the-bird was gone. Suddenly, Allen realized that he must have left the cage open after cleaning it and forgot about the window being open on such a hot day. Upset, Allen fell down to the floor sobbing.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
Upon hearing the noise, Allen’s mother rushed upstairs and asked what had happened.

W: Oh! What happened to your yard It’s all torn up.
M: This happened over the last two weeks, actually. It was birds and other small animals hunting for their winter food.
W: What Why are they digging up the grass I thought they just ate leftover (残余的) food from the garbage cans.
M: They’re looking for the little insects that eat the roots of the grass and lay their eggs in the soil.
W: I guess there’s not much you can do about that. Once they’re in, they’re in.
M: I think the only way to stop the problem is to have the entire yard replanted first. Then I have to treat it with chemicals so the insects don’t come back.
W: Wow, that is going to take a lot of work… and cost a lot of money.
M: Why do you think I’m in such a bad mood

M: The World Cup this year has been really exciting. Who are you cheering for
W: Well, I cheer for England when my parents are around. But I secretly want Portugal to win.
M: Probably because you like Cristiano Ronaldo. Is that the only player you know
W: Yeah, pretty much.
M: Well, do you think Portugal is going to beat Spain tonight
W: I hope so. Although Spain hasn’t lost a single game yet, and Portugal has been playing pretty badly so far.
M: Maybe Ronaldo will score three goals, and they will go to the championship match.
W: I think there’s a better chance of him marrying me, to be honest.
M: I agree with you, but crazy things can happen! Spain thinks they’re the best in the world. They’re way too confident. That’s often when teams end up losing.
W: Maybe you’re right, but my money is still on Spain. Would you care to place a little bet on the game Say, 20 dollars
M: Whoa, I don’t want to take that much money from a friend! How about half that amount
W: Deal.

M: Malls are popular places for Americans to go, with hundreds of stores under one roof. Some people spend so much time at malls that they are called “mall rats”. Mall rats shop until they drop, even though they don’t actually buy that many things. Other people go to the malls to get daily exercise, with the new sport of mall walking. Most, of course, go to the malls for the usual purpose of meeting friends and hanging out. One of the largest malls in the United States is the Mall of America in Minnesota, which was opened in 1992. It has parking spaces for 12,750 cars, and about 750,000 people shop there every week. The Mall of America has more than 520 stores, eight night clubs, and a park of more than 28,000 square meters! It also has over 50 restaurants with food from all over the world and a great cinema for shoppers to relax when they’re tired.

B 5. C 6. D 7. A

根据文章第一段“Maybe it was a joke. I hated to think that someone could have opened an account under my grandmother’s name.(也许这只是个玩笑罢了。我实在不愿去想竟有人会冒用我祖母的名义开设账户。)”可知,作者最初看到祖母的好友请求时,以为是个玩笑,并且不愿相信有人会用祖母的名字开设账户,这表明作者最初对此是持怀疑态度的。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Her Facebook proficiency (熟练) is not of great importance. It’s the fact that she’s on social media and has daily access to pictures of her family.(她对脸书的熟练程度并不是很重要。重要的是她使用社交媒体这一行为本身,而且她每天都能看到家人的照片。)”可知,对于作者来说,真正重要的是祖母在社交媒体上的存在。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“My grandmother has four children, ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. We all live fairly close to her, but we also lead very busy lives. And though we invite Mammie to many performances and games, her lack of mobility limits her attendance. Now that she has a Facebook account, she doesn’t have to miss a thing. She can keep up with the latest trends (动向) and view vacation pictures.(我祖母有四个子女、十个孙辈和十个曾孙辈。
根据文章最后一段“A friend asked me the other day if I was going to tell her that she didn’t need to sign her name at the end of her comments. ‘I sure am not,’ I told my friend. ‘She can use Facebook however she wants. I’m not criticizing a single thing she does.’(前几天,一位朋友问我,是否要告诉她不用在评论末尾签上自己的名字。“我当然不会去告诉她,”我对朋友说,“她想怎么用Facebook就怎么用。我不会对她做的任何一件事指手画脚。”)”可知,作者拒绝朋友的建议是因为她想尊重祖母的选择,让祖母按照自己的方式使用Facebook,而不会对她做的任何事情进行批评。故选A。

D 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第二段中“Here are two reasons why you should devote a movie night to this modern classic. First, no work of literature deals with female character formation quite as well as Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel. And the 1994 film, directed by Gillian Armstrong, stays true to the spirit of this classic book about four sisters growing up in New England.(以下是你应该花一个电影之夜来欣赏这部现代经典的两个原因。首先,没有哪部文学作品能像路易莎·梅·奥尔科特1868年的小说那样,如此关注女性性格的形成。1994年由吉莉安·阿姆斯特朗执导的这部电影忠实于这本关于四个在新英格兰长大的姐妹的经典书籍的精神)”可知,作者推荐1994年版的《小妇人》的原因之一是因为它忠实于原著。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“This well-rounded focus on women’s many sides sets “Little Women” apart from other 19th-century American stories about women, which often had overly emotional and romantic views of women’s lives.(这种对女性多方面的全面关注使《小妇人》有别于其他19世纪美国关于女性的故事,后者往往对女性的生活有过多的情感和浪漫看法)”可知,作者在第三段强调《小妇人》与其他类似小说的不同之处。故选A项。
根据第四段“In addition to several versions of different quality produced over the years, there is also Greta Gerwig’s 2019 feature-length adaptation. Despite an outstanding performance by Saoirse Ronan, whose Jo, the second-oldest March sister, is perhaps the most detailed and realistic of all, this modern version awkwardly changes Alcott’s message about 19th-century ideas of femininity. Toward the end of the film, Jo says lines that seem borrowed from a 21st-century course on women’s studies, and reflect experts’ understanding rather than the original text and spirit of the novel.(除了多年来制作的几个不同质量的版本外,还有格蕾塔·葛韦格2019年的长篇改编版。
根据最后一段中“In the 1994 adaptation, overlayed on the central plot of character development is a warm, idealized, familial atmosphere. This quality is key and hard to measure. In short, it’s the kind of movie that makes you want to reach for a blanket and tea, even if you typically don’t like blankets and aren’t a tea drinker.(在1994年的改编版本中,在人物发展的中心情节之上,笼罩着一种温暖、理想化的家庭氛围。这种品质是关键,而且很难衡量。简而言之,这是一种让你想要拿起毯子,端起茶的电影,即使你通常不喜欢毯子,也不喝茶)”可知,作者在最后一段表现了1994年改编版本的吸引人的氛围。故选D项。

C 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第一段中“Oleg Kononenko has become the first human to achieve 1,000 days of spaceflight over a 16-year career visiting and living on the International Space Station (ISS).(奥列格·科诺年科成为首位在16年的国际空间站访问和生活中累计完成1000天太空飞行的人类)”可知,奥列格·科诺年科创造了在太空累计飞行时间最长的记录。
根据第二段中“Given that both the Artemis Accords and the International Lunar Research Station initiative (倡议) aim to send men and women on longer and longer missions to space, including semi-permanent (半永久的) habitation of the moon and eventually a journey to Mars, scientists need to understand what long-term presence in outer space will do to the human body.(鉴于《阿尔忒弥斯协议》和国际月球研究站倡议都旨在将男女宇航员送入太空执行越来越长的任务,包括在月球的半永久性居住,并最终前往火星,科学家需要了解长期处于外太空会对人体产生什么影响)”和第三段中“To that end, Kononenko, who has routinely spent many hundreds of continuous days and even years in low-Earth orbit, will be providing data points “days, months and years,” after his return, says Emmanuel Urquieta, the former chief medical officer of the NASA-funded Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH), led by Baylor College of Medicine.(To that end,美国国家航空航天局资助的贝勒医学院领导的太空健康转化研究机构(TRISH)前首席医疗官伊曼纽尔·乌尔基塔表示,科诺年科将在返回后提供“数天、数月甚至数年”的数据点,他经常在低地球轨道连续飞行数百天甚至数年)”可知,第二段提到科学家需要了解长期处于外太空会对人体产生什么影响,第三段提到科诺年科将提供相关数据,故可推测第三段中划线短语“To that end”指的是“为了研究太空生活的影响”。
根据倒数第二段““I’m sure that there will be a lot of research coming up in the future when he comes back to Earth and I’m sure that there will be a very long follow-up with him, you know, days, months, and years after, to try really to understand these very unique data points,” Urquieta says.(乌尔基塔说:“我相信,当他回到地球后,未来会有很多研究,而且我相信,在他回来后的几天、几个月甚至几年里,都会对他进行非常长时间的跟踪研究,以真正了解这些非常独特的数据点。”)”和最后一段““When you project the data that we have from six-month missions to 900 days, there’s still a huge gap of data that we need to address so that we can safely say that, ‘OK, we have enough data that we can confidently say that we’re able to send someone to Mars and make sure that that person is going to come back as healthy as he or she left Earth.’”(“当你将我们从为期6个月的任务中获得的数据推算到900天时,我们仍然需要解决大量的数据缺口,这样我们才能放心地说,‘好吧,我们有足够的数据,我们可以自信地说,我们能够将人类送上火星,并确保他们能像离开地球时一样健康地返回。’”)” 故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段中“Oleg Kononenko has become the first human to achieve 1,000 days of spaceflight over a 16-year career visiting and living on the International Space Station (ISS).(奥列格·科诺年科成为首位在16年的国际空间站访问和生活中累计完成1000天太空飞行的人类)”、第四段“Urquieta explains that medicine in space is a growing field, and that the effects of the space environment on eye health, bone loss, and blood flow are not well understood, nor are the impacts of long-term radiation exposure (辐射暴露) and space sickness.(乌尔基塔解释说,太空医学是一个不断发展的领域,太空环境对眼睛健康、骨质流失和血液流动的影响还不太清楚,长期辐射暴露和太空病的影响也不太清楚)”和第五段““I’m sure that there will be a lot of research coming up in the future when he comes back to Earth and I’m sure that there will be a very long follow-up with him, you know, days, months, and years after, to try really to understand these very unique data points,” Urquieta says.(乌尔基塔说:“我相信,当他回到地球后,未来会有很多研究,而且我相信,在他回来后的几天、几个月甚至几年里,都会对他进行非常长时间的跟踪研究,以真正了解这些非常独特的数据点。”)”
D 17. E 18. G 19. C 20. A

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Upon hearing the noise, Allen’s mother rushed upstairs and asked what had happened. “Mary, she’s… she’s gone,” Allen sighed sadly with disappointment. “Don’t worry, honey,” said his mother, trying to convey comfort and confidence, “Let’s move together and find Mary. Six years of companion has established a close bond between both of you. She will definitely come back to her family.” Allen’s mother then kissed him fondly on the forehead and helped him back up from the floor. Hand in hand, they made their way downstairs and to the front door.
Filled with anticipation, Allen and his mother went outside to look for Mary. They called out Mary’s name, even imitating bird sounds as they walked down the street. They scanned their way down one block after another-eventually they found themselves at the entrance of the park Allen and Mary had been to multiple times. Amazingly, it was Mary that was perching atop of the bench where Allen always liked to sit in times of sorrow and loneliness. At the sight of Allen, Mary unhesitatingly spread her wings and flew, chirping all the way, into Allen’s cupped hand. His mother was right after all: Mary always found her way back to Allen’s heart.
