The online class was absolutely wonderful. Themed on the Appreciation of Classic Poetry, it unfolded the eternal charm of classic poetry to us. Online as it was, this class created a totally immersive atmosphere.
The highlight of the class was the short clip named “When Li Bai Meets William Wordsworth”. By comparing the differences and similarities of these two great romantic poets, the video gave us a new insight into their writing skills and the emotions hidden behind the lines. It also triggered our passion to explore more about the ever-lasting beauty of poems.
Honestly, it would be better if more interactive elements, such as mini-games or real-time comments, are included in this class. Generally speaking, it was truly fantastic.
67. She found Caper sitting in front of the door, with a notebook in his mouth. “Why are you here, Caper ” Mrs. Lee swelled with confusion and couldn’t help asking more. Suddenly, the dog-ear in the notebook attracted her attention. She took the notebook and quickly opened it, only to find a message from Willie, which said, “Mum, come to me! I am in a shaft in the pasture.” “Caper, can you take me to find your little master ” asked Mrs. Lee anxiously. The honest friend wagged his tail, seeming to understand her words. He turned around and ran forward fast. Mrs. Lee followed him to the far corner of the pasture and there was Willie, alive and well, in the shaft. How glad he was when his mother caught him in her arms and lifted him out!
Willie told Mum how he came up with the idea after he was success fully rescued. After he and Caper both fell into the shaft, he tried to calm himself down and think of how to get out. A good idea occurred to him when he touched the notebook in his pocket. He took it out, wrote down the message, dog-eared the page and said to Caper, “Caper, I will help you out! Remember you have to go home and give the notebook to Mum!” Then he bent down, lifted the dog up with all his strength, raised himself upon tiptoe and helped him out. Having heard this, Mrs. Lee gave the clever boy a warm hug, praising, “Well done, Willie!”江阴高级中学2024—2025高三第一学期10月月考试卷

I used to have a “dream job”. At least, that’s how many people saw it. It was a highly desirable government position that included a guaranteed retirement and a lifetime medical plan. It was also nearly impossible to get fired.
But I was miserable every day. As soon as I clocked into work, all my energy—and in turn, all my desire for life—faded away.
Instead, I thought about my side business. For a few years, I’d been running an auto shop in my home garage. I specialized in repairing and modifying classic cars. At one point, I hung up a print (照片) of my favorite automotive shop as a source of inspiration. I knew the owner’s story well: He has a tight work schedule, but his work ethic, artistry, and authenticity never falter(衰退).
In 2019, one of my clients offered me an actual industrial space to run my shop. I was nervous to say yes. Could I really expand my business and keep my government job Was it wise to give up something with so much security
Then it dawned on me: The “dream job” had a guaranteed retirement plan for people who work there for 30 years—but after 30 year, would elderly me look back and regret not seizing the opportunity to do things on my own terms I had my answer.
In 2020, I left the dream job to run my business full time. In 2021, I somehow kept the business afloat, and we moved into a shop that’s double the size. That’s when I realized that my print was still hanging up back at my “first” garage. I thought about how much that print meant to me back then, and how it deserved a place of prominence(杰出) at my new location.
It is now proudly displayed in my humble shop, along with a banner given to me by the owner of the store that I like. It serves as a reminder to hold myself to the same ethos as he—tireless work ethic, ever-evolving artistry, and genuine authenticity. Frankly, this path has not been easy. Since starting my own business, never in my life have I been so tired, frustrated, or anxious. But I live on my own terms and love every second of life.

Traditionally, profiting from forests often meant capitalizing on timber (木材)——choosing commercial timber. Yet increasingly, there is an understanding that it’s of greater significance to keep trees standing than cut them down for financial profit. Money is not everything. We have to recognize real and lasting value is from natural resources. But money is a fact of life.
Good news is that we can expect entire natural woodland is left undamaged and still provides a revenue (收益) stream. Leaving woodland complete does not necessarily mean that we do not touch it at all. Conservation work may involve building back biodiversity or the removal of foreign plant species.
A healthy woodland system can provide a range of yields (产物). Besides eatable yields——top fruit, berries, and food crops, it produces substances for chemical use. The non-timber forest products provided by natural ecosystems will vary significantly depending on where they are. But there’re almost always ways to explore to acquire revenue.
A project in the U.K. shows woodland is also a draw for visitors. It engages a community who creates a sustainable area of woodland. The sale of handmade wooden items and non-timber forest products is involved. But the community largely obtains revenue by opening up parts of the natural woodland to the public with an adventure playground and outdoor recreational activities on the site. It also offers courses on nest building, special wildlife events and more. The project is thought to have great uniqueness. In terms of revenue, it centers round the existing natural land; the yields woodland can provide become side products.
Recreational activities, tours, and classes are just the commencement. A rich and biodiverse woodland can be an ecosystem that draws in people looking for a beautiful place to stay. Woodland has great value in ecological and social terms. And when you nurse it, it could also add to the income from your land.
28. What do people increasingly think about forest conservation
A. It is difficult to carry out.
B. It means making full use of timber.
C. It outweighs financial development.
D. It should centre on building back biodiversity.
29. Why is the project considered unique
A. It makes woodland itself the main product.
B. It focuses on protecting natural land.
C. It aims to promote ecotourism.
D. It provides educational experiences.
30. What does the underlined word “commencement” mean in the last paragraph
A. Intention.
B. Wish.
C. Exception.
D. Beginning.
31. Which is a suitable title for the text
A. Woodland Brings Profit While Staying Complete
B. A Project Creates Sustainable Woodland
C. Forest Conservation Has Been a Top Priority
D. Non-timber Products Help Gain More Revenue
D
Is there a link between social media and depression Do Facebook and Instagram have a negative impact on your mental health It’s complicated.
Sometimes, looking through Instagram just makes you feel bad. You try not to envy your friends, but they always seem to be traveling somewhere cool, eating something fancy, or looking cute in perfect just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. On the other hand, there are times when you laugh at funny memes (表情包), catch up with old friends, and feel happy to belong to fun social media communities. Clearly, social media isn’t all bad.
People are increasingly suspecting that there’re potential problems of social media. Things like cyberbullying (网上欺凌) , screen addiction, and being exposed to endless filtered images (美颜) that make it impossible not to make comparisons between yourself and others often make the news. In July, a big study came out in the journal JAMA titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” This big headline seems to confirm what a lot of people have been saying — screen time is horrible for young people.
The study followed over 3,800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program. Part of what the investigators measured was the teens’ amount of screen time, including time spent on social media, as well as their levels of depression symptoms. One of their main findings was that higher amounts of social media use were associated with higher levels of depression. That was true both when the researches compared between people and compared each person against their own mental health over time.
Case closed Not so fast. Before we end the debate once and for all, let’s take a closer look at this and other studies. Let’s ask ourselves: what exactly is the relationship between social media use and depression It turns out there are several warnings.
32. Why do people sometimes feel bad when looking through Instagram
A. They lack contact with old friends. B. They can travel nowhere.
C. They don’t look perfect. D. They feel unbalanced.
33 Why is the article in journal JAMA mentioned
A. To comment. B. To prove. C. To suggest. D. To explore.
34. Which may agree with the findings of the study
A. Depression is related to social media use.
B. Teens’ amount of screen time is limited.
C. It is not easy to tell reasons for depression.
D. Social media contributes to physical health.
35. What’s the best title of the text
A. How to reduce depression B. Does social media cause depression
C. Shall people reduce screen time D. Why is it time to give up social media

Willie’s 11th birthday was coming. His aunt sent him a birthday present—a small nice notebook. There was a place in it for a pencil. Willie valued it a lot and always kept it in his pocket. When he found something interesting, he would write it down in the book.
One afternoon, after Willie came back from school, he called his best friend, Caper, a well-trained shepherd dog and said, “Come, Caper! Let’s go out and have fun.” They went to the pasture field (牧场) to catch the butterflies and there they found a shaft (通风井), which seemed to be deserted for a long time. Willie sat down on the edge of the shaft, bending over to see how deep it was. Suddenly, he lost his balance and fell in. “Help! Help!” Willie called desperately. But no response at all. He was so far away from the house. He made several attempts to climb up the shaft but again he failed! Now Willie was exhausted and frustrated. When Caper saw his master falling into the shaft, the little good companion ran round and round, reaching down and trying to pull him out. Unfortunately, a piece of rock gave way under his feet, and he fell in the shaft too!
It was getting dark. When Willie’s mother, Mrs. Lee came back from work and found there was no one at home, she was anxious and worried. Without any clue at home, she decided to look for Willie outside. She went to all the trees under which Willie was in the habit of playing, but he was nowhere to be found. By this time, the sun had gone down. A feeling of panic took hold of Mrs. Lee. She comforted herself that Willie might have come back. She rushed back, hoping to find her son at home.
