第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳答案。
A
In a recent survey, over half of first-year college students wished they had worked harder in high school. Taking challenging classes in high school, such as honors and college-level courses, builds new skills and prepares you for college. They are exactly what admissions officers like to see on applications.
Experience a Different Approach
Here’s a brief overview of some of the classes that may be available to you:
Honors classes usually cover similar material as regular classes, but at a faster pace or more deeply than regular classes.
College Board’s AP Program offers college-level classes that help students develop and apply skills, such as reading critically, solving problems analytically, and writing clearly. More than 30 classes are available.
The IB program offers college-level classes that stress developing your thinking skills and an awareness of global issues.
College courses may be available for you to take while still in high school, either at your school or on a college campus.
Find Your Passion
Courses like these can introduce you to topics and ideas not covered in the regular classroom. You may even discover the subject that will become your college major or the focus of your career.
Prepare for College
Showing that you’ re willing to push yourself by taking demanding classes in high school can help when you’ re applying to college. The level of courses you take now is one of the first things colleges look at.
In addition, college courses, IB classes and exams, and AP Exams may lead to college credits, advanced placement, or both in college. This means you may be able to skip some basic college courses and move directly into interesting, advanced classes. This also may allow you to free up enough time to pursue a double major or study abroad.
21.Which of the following highlights global consciousness
A.Honors classes. B.IB programs. C.AP Program. D.College courses.
22.Which could be the benefit of taking challenging classes
A.Graduating with honors. B.Broadening career prospect.
C.Boosting academic possibilities. D.Ensuring admission to colleges.
23.The passage is intended for _________.
A.high school students B.career advisors
C.summer school organizers D.first-year undergraduates
B
As a clueless freshman, I waltzed into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them.
When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits I earned from the course wouldn’t count toward my major. By the end of the session, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic.
But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the waitlist. That’s when the teacher asked for a volunteer to submit the first workshop story.
Silence blanketed the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class ” He said he would.
So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite.
Years later, I’d completed a degree in creative writing and was working on a novel when a literary agent asked to read the first 50 pages of my draft. But I wasn’t comfortable showing her anything; the novel was far from done.
Throughout graduate school, I’d been advised many times not to contact agents until I have a complete draft. In the meanwhile, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the agent might not remember me after a year.
So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed me on the strength of those chapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication of three novels.
Determination, focus, perseverance—the qualities that I consider critical in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I’d trained my gaze only on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities to look up, raise my hand, and say yes.
24.What made the author finally decide to take the course
A.The popularity of the course. B.Her curiosity about story writing.
C.Her confidence in her writing skills. D.The need to get credits for her degree.
25.The author volunteered to write the first workshop story to ______.
A.win a place in the class B.impress the teacher

26.The author sent her first three chapters to the agent because ______.
A.she wanted to get the chance of publication B.her story was attractive to readers
C.the agent asked her to turn in the work D.her friends advised her to do so

A.Chance favors only the prepared mind. B.Confidence leads to growth and fulfillment.
C.Action speaks louder than words. D.Success comes to those who dare.

Have you ever had the feeling that you can’t think when there is too much noise around Did you ever think a fish could experience that feeling too A recent paper published in Science titled “Soundscape (声景) of the Anthropocene Oceans”, combined over 10,000 scientific papers, confirming that undersea life knows that exact same feeling, more often than not. Anthropogenic (人为的) ocean noise, also known as underwater noise pollution, has created a dramatic impact on marine life due to “human-caused” activity within and neighboring our oceans.
Disney Pixar’s animated film Finding Nemo educated us about the ocean, and specifically within the ordinary world of a clown fish. A fact many may not know is that clown fish spend the first part of their lives as larvae, drifting with the current of the ocean until they become strong enough to swim against it. Once they are powerful and strong, they head home in sheltered coral reefs. There is only one drawback — the fish can’t physically see the reef, but they can hear it. The only problem is, if they can’t hear it, will they ever make it home
Our anthropogenic ocean noise, such as cargo ships, ship and boat propellers, surfing, deep sea mining, etc. are causing destruction of marine life. According to Time, sound is the sensory signal that travels the farthest through the ocean. Anthropogenic noise drowns out the natural soundscapes, putting marine life under immense stress. Altogether, this stress then affects their general health, disrupts their behavior, physiology, reproduction and, in extreme cases, causes death. Marine life can adapt to noise pollution, however, only if they can escape it. This only renders further complications of straying (使偏离) species from their traditional breeding regions or separating them from their families.
Now, what if we told you there is already a solution Multiple remedies, ideas and designs are currently in the works or already exist to eliminate and reverse the damage of anthropogenic ocean noise. As Time explains, from wind-powered ships to noise-reducing propellers, floating wind turbines and “bubble curtains” that muffle construction noise, the solutions are already available and in some cases, cost-effective. The authors of the paper hope it will catch the attention of policymakers, who historically speaking, have ignored the matter still to this day.
Of all the challenges ocean creatures are battling, luckily sound pollution is the easiest compromise humans can make. Once the noise has decreased, marine life will be able to better manage everything else it is up against.
28.How does anthropogenic ocean noise affect clown fish
A.It hinders them from finding their home.
B.It promotes their better development.
C.It improves their reproduction rates.
D.It causes them to give up their migration in the ocean.
29.What does the underlined word “renders” probably mean in paragraph 3
A.decides on B.leads to C.holds back D.results from
30.Which of the following solutions is already available according to paragraph 4
A.The application of relevant laws B.The attention of local policymakers.
C.The restriction of human activities. D.The use of noise control technology.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.The urgent need for ocean conservation.
B.The beauty of marine ecosystems.
C.The harmful effects of human-generated ocean noise.
D.The impact of climate change on ocean noise.

When music comes on, some people are toe-lappers or head-bobbers, others shake their hips, and then there are those who let the rhythm move them to a full-body boogie (布吉舞) . But, whatever it is, the way we dance to a beat is so noticeable to an individual that a computer can now identify us by our unique dancing “fingerprint”.
Researchers at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Music Research at Finland's University of Jyv skyl have been using motion capture technology to study what a person's dance moves say about his or her mood, personality, and ability to sympathize. They recently made an accidental discovery while trying to see if an ML machine, a form of artificial intelligence, would be able to identify which kind of music was playing based on how the participants of the study were dancing. In their study, the researchers motion captured 73 participants with the AI technology while they danced to eight different music genres: electronica, jazz, metal, pop, rap, reggae, country, and blues. The only instruction the dancers were given was to move in a way that felt natural.
But what it could do was more shocking. The computer was able to correctly identify which music one of the participants was dancing to 94 percent of the time, regardless of what kind of music was playing, based on the pattern of a person's dance style. It was the movement of participants’ heads, shoulders and knees that were important markers in distinguishing between individual. “It seems as though a person’s dance movements a kind of fingerprint. Each person has a unique movement signature that stays the same no matter what kind of music is playing,” said Pasi Saari, a co-author of the study, in a class.
It’s possible that dance-recognition software could become something similar to face-recognition software but it doesn’t seem as practical. For now, researchers say that they are not as interested in possible surveillance (监视) uses of this technology, but rather what the results of this study say about how humans respond to music. So don’t worry about being identified at nightclub by an AI via your signature dance moves yet.
32.What did the researchers expect to do with the ML machine
A.Test the dancers’ flexibility.
B.Identify the music using dancers' moves.
C.Make dancers accustomed to the beat.
D.Check the accuracy of motion capture technology.
33.What might not help the AI technology determine a dancer’s identity
A.Foot movement. B.Head movement.
C.Knee movement. D.Shoulder movement.
34.What do researchers want to use the results for
A.Putting it on the application market.
B.Programming it to work at nightclub.
C.Developing a software like face-recognition.
D.Learning about the human response to music.
35.What can be the best title of the text
A.New AI can identify you by your dancing “fingerprint”.
B.New AI can generate your next dance move.
C.A dance-recognition software will become more popular.
D.A music style matters less than its beat.

There is considerable evidence from studies with adults that volunteering benefits a person’s physical and mental health. 36 A 2023 analysis suggested that young people who had participated in community service were more likely to be in excellent health and stayed calm when faced with challenges.
37 It could be that the children volunteers were already in great health. But because of an alarming rise in mental health issues among young people, environmental health scientists believe this early evidence is promising enough to pursue. A 2021 advisory warned that the number of young people reporting constant feelings of sadness or hopelessness had increased by40 percent over the previous decade. There are multiple possible causes, including anxiety over climate change, the effects of social media use and unfriendly personal circumstances.
To address these problems, researchers point to the importance of “contribution” as an essential piece of social and emotional development for teenagers. Volunteering is one good way young people can contribute. 38 In 2022, developmental psychologist Parissa Ballard and her colleagues tested volunteering as an intervention for nine 14-to-20-year-olds who had been recently diagnosed with mild to moderate depression or anxiety. After 30 hours of volunteer work at community organizations, the average reduction in depressive symptoms was 19 percent.
What accounts for the benefits Helping others improves mood and raises confidence. It provides rich ground for building social connections. It also changes how young people see themselves. Many teens don’t feel important. 39
There may be a potential downside to volunteering, however. 40 “Young people have to choose something that feels meaningful to them,” Ballard says. Adults can help by offering choices and checking volunteer opportunities to be sure that organizations are well run and equipped to offer a good experience.
A.Admittedly, this finding only shows connections.
B.Now scientists are finding similar links in children and teenagers.
C.This improvement was in comparison with young people who did not volunteer.
D.Everyone in the study enjoyed the work and reported a sense of pride and accomplishment.
E.The sense of mattering to others translates really well to their needs to connect and belong.
F.Volunteering gives them a different sense of themselves, a sense of confidence and self-value.
G.The experience can be harmful if young people feel like they are being forced to participate.

Taking swimming class was a must in Ren's school and there was a pre-test in the third week and a final test in the last week according to the course plan.
That pre-test day came soon. The gym teacher blew the whistle and four students dived into the swimming pool, racing to the other side, Then the next four were up, but only three stood on the diving board. “Where is Ren ” the gym teacher asked in concern.
Ren's face turned red, and he was unsteady, He looked at the pool and stepped back. “You cannot make me do this!” he said.
Sadie, his teammate, patted him on the back gently. “You can do it! I will help you if you need it." Ren stared into Sadie's eyes and he calmed down.
“You can do it. You need to pass this class.” The gym teacher said, Ren stepped on the diving board, putting his goggles(护目镜) over his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistle blew and Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran and pushed Ren into the water.
Sadie glared at the boy. “Why would you do that ” A minute passed by and Ren still wasn't coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him out of the water. She gave him CPR(心肺复苏) ,and it took a while until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water and sat up, feeling dizzy.
Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank goodness! Why didn't you use your arms or legs " Ren stared away from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then looking up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes. “I can't swim. 第一节(满分15分)
【答案】Possible version
In recent years, it has become a common sight to see students sharing their everyday moments on social media platforms, which is particularly popular among high school students.
There are several reasons behind this phenomenon. One of them is that social media provides a convenient platform for students to express themselves and connect with peers. Besides, sharing life online can bring a sense of belonging and recognition, as likes and comments from others can boost self-esteem. Lastly, in today’s fast-paced world, students often seek an outlet to relieve stress, and online sharing serves as such an outlet.
From my perspective, sharing online has good points, but we need balance. Too much sharing might cause privacy issues and harm our mental well-being. We should think about what we post and its effect on our lives. So, I suggest sharing carefully online to match our values and aims.
第二节(满分25分)
After gym class, Sadie asked Ren gently why he was afraid of water. Ren hesitated for a moment, then admitted, "I’ve always been scared of drowning. My parents never taught me how to swim, and I’ve seen too many accidents on TV." His voice trembled as he spoke(状从), the weight of his fear evident in his eyes. Sadie listened attentively, her expression full of understanding. "It’s okay, Ren," she reassured him softly. "Fear is natural, but it’s something we can overcome together." Sadie’s calm words helped him relax, and she smiled encouragingly. "We’ll start slow. Trust me, you’ll be swimming in no time!" Ren’s anxiety began to fade as he felt Sadie’s warmth and support, her presence making the water seem less intimidating.
The gym teacher blew the whistle, and this time Ren dived bravely. His heart raced, but he took a deep breath and let the cool water surround him. As he swam across the poo, his legs moved with more confidence than ever before. Sadie’s voice echoed in his ears, reminding him to keep his strokes steady and strong. Despite a few moments of panic, Ren fought through his fear, pushing himself forward. When he reached the other side of the pool, his face lit up with pride. He had done it! The gym teacher clapped his hands and nodded in approval. "Great job, Ren! You’ve made real progress." Ren grinned widely, feeling like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Sadie gave him a thumbs up, proud of her friend’s achievement.

故填which/that。
故填to arrive。

【原文】M: We all know we are supposed to exercise to stay in shape. But sometimes going to the gym can become boring. That’s when you have to find a new challenge. If you live in an area with mountains and snow, you definitely should try snowboarding. First of all, snowboarding is great exercise. It’s good for your heart. Of course, you must take things slowly at first. You can’t expect to fly down a mountain like an Olympic snowboarder on your first day. Like any activity, you must practice to become more advanced. You shouldn’t start on high hills, for example. First, you have to learn to control the board on small hills. Another great thing about snowboarding is that it is easy to get started. Instructors are easy to find and you don’t have to buy a lot of things. In fact, you should rent a board at first. Then if you enjoy it, you can buy your own board. With snowboarding, you don’t have to worry about a lot of rules because there aren’t any. Snowboarding is a fairly new sport, but it has quickly become very popular. Try snowboarding today, you won’t regret it.
