Jeff Kinney, an American writer, was born on February 19, 1971. His Diary of a Wimpy Kid series (系列) tells the stories of young Greg Heffley, a middle school student, and his many misadventures with his family and friends. The books are presented in diary form from Greg’s perspective, with basic cartoons that add to the stories’ humor.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball is the fourteenth book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Since its release, it has received positive reviews from critics and readers.
Greg Heffley’s aunt Reba passed away, leaving an inheritance (遗产) to his family. Greg’s mom decided to use the money to improve their house and add something to the kitchen to make it bigger. When the workers pulled down the walls, they found a lot of problems: rats, mold, etc. There was no more money left after the workers fixed what was broken. Greg’s parents decided to buy a better house with the money from selling their house. A family wanted it and gave them an offer. However, the family required some furniture should be changed. While trying to lift the hot tub, the worker made a mistake and the hot tub fell from the roof. Since the house was destroyed (破坏), the buyer pulled out and the Heffleys went back to where they started.
I am fascinated by the characters and the story and I find the book really fun! The situations Greg gets into are funny enough on their own, and the illustrations increase the laughter so much that kids and even adults might end up laughing out loud. In short, there’s a lot to enjoy about this book and I find a lot to appreciate in what is supposed to be a book for kids.

Though it is usually unwelcome, conflict (冲突) can undoubtedly cause change because it uncovers problems that may have been hiding under the surface. When conflict arises, it forces individuals (个人) and groups to face different opinions, values and interests. That can serve as an important starting point for dialogue, paving the way for a deeper understanding of the root causes of the conflict. That creates an opportunity for individuals and societies to address longstanding problems and start the process of change.
Conflict also often challenges individuals to rethink their priorities and values. In the face of trouble, individuals may have to re-evaluate their goals and expectations. This can lead to personal growth and a shift in opinions. For example, conflict within relationships can cause individuals to reflect on their own behavior and communication patterns, leading to improved interactions and mutual understanding.
Social progress is often driven by collective conflict that challenges established standards and systems. The global push for climate action is an example, with environmental conflict causing discussions and policy (政策) changes that aim to mitigate the effect of climate change.
While the transformative potential of conflict is evident, it is important to acknowledge that not all conflict leads to positive change. Destructive conflict can prevent progress. However, even in such situations, there is room for reflection and learning. The recognition of the harm caused by destructive conflict can serve as a motivation to seek alternatives and pursue peacebuilding efforts that promote understanding and cooperation.
In conclusion, conflict, when approached constructively, has the power to expose issues, promote reflection and drive change on personal, social, and global levels. The resolution of conflict often leads to improved communication, cooperation, and the establishment of fairer and more reasonable systems. While not all conflict leads to positive outcomes, the lessons learned from both conflicts emphasize the importance of seeking solutions that promote understanding, growth, and the betterment of individuals and societies.
28.Why can conflict lead to change according to the text
A.People will hide problems. B.People will form different views.
C.People will suffer from conflict. D.People will try to solve conflict.
29.How does conflict benefit individuals according to paragraph 2
A.By helping them achieve their goals.
B.By making them stick to their values.
C.By pushing them to do self-examination.
D.By driving them to build new relationships.
30.What does the underlined word “mitigate” mean in paragraph 3
A.Record. B.Reduce.
C.Examine. D.Recognize.
31.What does the author want to stress in paragraph 4
A.Conflict and change aren’t opposites.
B.Conflict often leads to positive results.
C.Destructive conflict isn’t always useless.
D.Destructive conflict and harm appear together.

Burning fossil fuels has driven climate change, and now climate change is costing people their health and their lives, says a new report from the medical journal The Lancet. The eighth annual Lancet Countdown, an international analysis that tracks nearly 50 different health-focused issues affected by climate change, calls for an immediate wind-down of fossil fuel use.
Pakistan,a country responsible for only 0.3% of all climate-change-causing carbon emissions (碳排放), was struck by huge floods in 2022 that displaced more than 30 million people and killed at least 1,700.When wildfire smoke from huge fires in Canada blanketed the US in the summer of 2023, emergency rooms saw an increase in admissions for lung problems, heart attacks and other health issues. In Europe, a 2022 summer heat wave resulted in over 60,000 deaths.
About one fifth of all US residents work outdoors; the percentages are even higher in many other countries. When it gets too hot, it gets harder and harder to work outside. In 2022, the report says, outdoor workers lost more than 140 hours each—or several weeks of pay—because of the intense heat.
The human and economic costs are forecast to grow as the planet gets one tenth of a degree hotter.Heat-related deaths, for example, could increase by nearly five times by the middle of the century, if there are no immediate reductions to carbon emissions.
“I have a young patient who suffers from uncontrollable asthma (哮喘).She lives right next to a highway and is breathing in harmful air from cars burning gas,” says Renee Salas, a doctor at Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health.“So the treatment she needs is electric vehicles and air purification. These are prescriptions I can’t write.”
32.What can be learned from paragraphs 1 and 2
A.Americans received good health care.
B.Wildfires burned large areas of forest.
C.Climate change caused a lot of human deaths.
D.Pakistan was mainly responsible for climate change.

A.Losing jobs has become very common.
B.Heat-related deaths will double by 2050.

34.What does Renee Salas want to show
A.It is wise to reduce our dependence on cars.

How to design a small garden
Even if you don’t have a large area in your yard, you can still make a beautiful garden with the help of the following advice.
36 Look for a place in your yard where you can see your garden from a window or a spot (地点) in your yard so that you’re able to enjoy it. Make sure you can walk into your garden with ease to make it easier to take care of your plants. 37
Plan the layout for your garden by drawing the outline on the paper. Start by drawing a big rectangle (矩形) so it can be changed for the actual size you want. 38 Be sure to leave an 18-inch space between garden beds so you can easily walk between them and care for your plants.
Arrange your design so there are focal points. Aim to have several aspects of your garden design unique so they stand out in your garden. This could be a statue or a fountain placed in the center or on either side. Additionally, take into consideration where you want people to focus when they look at your garden. 39 Focal points help make your garden more attractive and visually pleasing.
Put similar plants across from one another to create rhythm and symmetry (对称). You’d better not put different plants in each of your garden beds. 40 That way, when you look at your garden, it will make the area more balanced.
A.Remember to cut the length of the rectangle.
B.Then you can plan your design around those spots.
C.Pick a place where you can easily get to your garden.
D.Instead, use the same plant or ones that have similar colors.

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me ” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack, fueled by his own frustration, shot back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feeling! You never thought about my feeling!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.

第二节
One possible version:
Jack rushed into his bedroom and locked the door heavily. He lay on the bed, huddling in the quilt. What he really wanted to do was to cut himself off from the whole world, especially from his mother. He couldn’t figure out why his mother didn’t understand him and why she forced him to do something he didn’t like. Slowly, he fell asleep while thinking. Suddenly he was awakened, hearing his mother’s voice outside the door, which was filled with apologies and tenderness. His mother promised him that she would respect his interests in the future.
When Jack heard his mother’s words, regretful tears rolled down his face. He realized that everything his mother did was totally for the sake of his future and what he said hurt his mother’s heart hard. It occurred to him that he had never showed his gratitude to his mother. He couldn’t wait to open the door and said thank you to his mother, who was standing in the doorway. He also promised his mother that he would study hard in practical subjects. Finally, the misunderstanding cleared up, they hugged each other tightly with a joyful smile.

M:I’m sorry again. Don’t worry about the book. I’ll get you a new one.
W:And there is ink all over the desk. The class will begin soon. How can I clean it
M:I have an old pair of gloves in my desk. I’ll clean your desk with them. It’s all my fault. I’ll take care of everything.
(Text 7)
M:Lily, your mom Sara used to sit on my knee like this when she was a little girl. She was our pride and joy.
W:It must have been lovely having parents like you and Grandma.
M:Yes, and I’m sure you enjoy having your mother and father as your parents.
W:Of course, they are wonderful. I love our family meals and playing together in the garden, although our weekend walks aren’t much fun.
M:Well, you will realize one day that they are very good parents because they are doing their best to keep you fit and healthy.
(Text 8)
M:Don’t look so pleased with yourself. I can tell you’re overjoyed that it’s Friday.
W:I am. And this is a special weekend because it is the start of my two-week vacation.
M:Really Are you going anywhere
W:Well. We thought of France at first. I like shopping there, but it can be expensive and the weather is always bad. Spain was also a choice, but the beaches get crowded there. In the end, we decided to leave for Italy which has rich culture and good weather as well.
M:Won’t your husband be sad that he is going to miss a shopping trip
W:Not at all. He doesn’t like that. And I am confident that he will be looking around the art galleries instead of going to the pub or watching football on TV.
(Text 9)
M:Oh, hi, Rachel, what are you doing here
W:Tom! Hi. Well, I work here on Saturdays. It’s my uncle’s shop. What are you doing here
M:I’m on my way to the Notting Hill Carnival. I’m doing a video story about it for my school project.
W:Well. That sounds interesting. I’ve never been to it.
M:You’re joking...Why don’t you come along later There are some good events this afternoon.
W:Sorry, I can’t. Well, I just don’t know if I can. I’ve got homework.
M:Go on, Rachel. All work and no play isn’t good for you.
W:Hmm, all right then. But I have to work for another 2 hours, so...
M:Do you want me to come and pick you up
W:That’ll be great, but are you sure
M:Of course. I’ll meet you outside at one o’clock in the afternoon if you like.
W:Thanks. Tom, that’s really kind of you.

W:Hey, Kelly, this is Melinda. I hope you arrived safely! I’ve left you this voice message to tell you some things about the house. I cooked some pancakes for you before I left and they are on the dining table. I also bought you some drinks and put them in the fridge. Please help yourself to anything you find. The closest food shop is on Roman Road opposite the subway station. The pet shop where I often go to buy bird food is on Green Street beside the post office. While you’re here, could you please water the plants once a day and feed the bird twice a day If you have any problems in the house, call my brother Ralph at 0393774843 or ask Billy for help. He’s the man next door. He is very friendly. Have a good time while you’re here!
