It was a September day, and as usual, the halls of Pine High School were filled with excitement. Students of all grades were rushing around. But for one student, today was unlike any other day. Today was the first day of high school for a freshman, Jamie. Jamie had always been a bit of a shy kid, but she had always loved her studies. She made up her mind to make the most of her high school years, but she knew that it wouldn’t be easy.
As she walked down the hallways, Jamie couldn’t help but feel worried. The older students seemed so confident, while she felt small and unimportant. But Jamie was determined to succeed, no matter what challenges came her way.
It wasn’t long before Jamie was faced with a challenge. In her first week of school, she was assigned (分派) a project that required a lot of research and planning. Jamie tried her best, but she soon realized that she was in over her head As she struggled to complete the project, Jamie began to doubt (怀疑) herself. She wondered if she was cut out for high school. But then, something great happened.
Jamie’s classmates began to notice how hard she was working, and they started to offer her help and support. They gave her advice on how to manage her time better, and they shared their tips for getting through assignments. With their help, Jamie was able to complete the project on time and with great success.
From that day on, Jamie realized that high school was not a challenge to be faced alone. With the help and support of her classmates, she was able to deal with any difficulty that came her way. And as she grew more confident in herself and her abilities, she knew that she was destined (注定) for great things.

Language lets us share our feelings, make connections, and even hand down family traditions like recipes and songs from generation to generation. But what about family members who don’t speak the same language
A “mother language” is defined as the first language that a child learns at home. So you’d think that means your mother language is by default your strongest, most comfortable language, right Wrong. While you might think learning a language is like riding a bicycle, something you never forget how to do, it’s easy to lose language fluency without practice.
Studies show that people who learn a heritage language (that is, one connected to their family history, whether they grew up speaking it or not) experience improved self-esteem (自尊) and safety in their identities (身份). Researchers also mention that reconnecting with and understanding the family history and community is the driving force behind heritage language learning.
Relearning a mother language or trying out a heritage language as a beginner might feel overwhelming at first, but the results can be incredibly rewarding. Jenny Liao’s article, Forgetting My First Language, details how her Cantonese slowly became rusty (荒疏的) after years of living away from home. Eventually, weekly phone calls with her parents only became possible through translation apps. The inability to communicate fluently had made their relationship shallow. Resolving to close these gaps, Liao threw herself into practicing Cantonese. She forced herself into uncomfortable Cantonese conversations whenever possible in stores and restaurants. Before long, she found she could have deeper conversations with her parents. Their relationship grew closer, even though her Cantonese only improved moderately. It’s a demonstration of the impressive power of language to bring families together.
Learning or relearning a heritage language can sound pretty intimidating at first. But the hard work invested proves to be rewarding and worthwhile. What could be a stronger personal connection than the connection with family heritage
28.What is the author’s attitude to the thought “mother language is the strongest”
A.Uncaring. B.Supportive. C.Concerned. D.Opposite.
29.What is the advantage of learning a heritage language according to studies
A.Improved job skills. B.Heightened sense of belonging.
C.Sharpened communication skills. D.Broadened understanding of different opinions.
30.How is paragraph 4 developed
A.By analyzing the cause. B.By offering an example.
C.By making a comparison. D.By explaining the data.
31.Which can replace the underlined word “intimidating” in the last paragraph
A.Confusing. B.Surprising. C.Frightening. D.Relaxing.

This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cellphone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It’s really amazing.”
“Well,” Jane shrugged her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I’ll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!”
“Sounds more like punishment than a vacation,” she didn’t look up from her soup and mumbled (嘟囔), “I can’t walk that far.”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK, I’ll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I’m ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path. “I’m still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

I handed her a bottle of water and we took a break. “I missed my phone.” she complained as we continued climbing. Though unhappy, she just climbed along with me.
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How wonderful!” She looked around dreamily, her eyes twinkling with wild excitement. A refreshing breeze brushed the mountain top, miles of trees spread out below us and birds chirped between branches. We sat on a large rock and ate sandwiches, enjoying the sounds, the smells and the sunlight. “Anyone still wants her phone ” I joked. She rolled her eyes, laughing out loud. The next morning, Jane danced to my room, crying, “Let’s hike around the lake today.” Sure, get our backpack then, I beamed, relieved and joyful.

And I decided it was time to start up an organization to help them. So in 2013, two years after I entered Orange High School, I founded an organization called Love for the Elderly. My interest in writing led me to create the organization where people from all across the globe send letters filled with kindness and joy. I then send these letters to senior centers and nursing homes all across the country. Up to now, I have collected over 1,000 letters and their response has been truly unforgettable. This past month, I had the opportunity to receive 100 dollars as the prize I won in a contest. This money has been of great help for my organization for we don’t get much money from the government. Next, I plan to set up a food bank for old people in my city.

根据第二段中的“So you’d think that means your mother language is by default your strongest, most comfortable language, right Wrong. While you might think learning a language is like riding a bicycle, something you never forget how to do, it’s easy to lose language fluency without practice.(所以你会认为这意味着你的母语默认是你最强大、最舒服的语言,对吗?错了。虽然你可能认为学习一门语言就像骑自行车,你永远不会忘记怎么做,但如果不练习,很容易失去语言的流畅性)”可知,文章先给出“母语=最牢固语言”这一直觉观点,随后用“Wrong”直接否定,并举例说明不练习就会退化。由此推知,作者对“母语是最强的”这一观点持相反的态度。故选D。

Eventually, weekly phone calls with her parents only became possible through translation apps. The inability to communicate fluently had made their relationship shallow. Resolving to close these gaps, Liao threw herself into practicing Cantonese.(Jenny Liao的文章《忘记我的第一语言》详细描述了在离家多年后,她的广东话是如何慢慢生疏的。 为了弥补这些差距,廖女士全身心地投入到广东话的练习中)”及“Before long, she found she could have deeper conversations with her parents. Their relationship grew closer, even though her Cantonese only improved moderately. It’s a demonstration of the impressive power of language to bring families together.(不久之后,她发现自己可以和父母进行更深入的对话。
根据最后一段中的“Learning or relearning a heritage language can sound pretty intimidating at first. But the hard work invested proves to be rewarding and worthwhile.(学习或重新学习一门传统语言一开始听起来可能相当intimidating。但事实证明,付出的努力是有回报的,也是值得的)”可知,前后句意存在转折关系,对比选项可知,划线词intimidating与frightening“吓人的”最为接近。故选C。
